The Largest Elk Bull in this area, the "Sheriff", sheds his antlers. The larger Elk Bulls shed their antlers first, which gives them a jump on antler growth for the next rutting season. More on Elk in Canada's Rockies..

Recently watched a video of a good guy - a hunter at that - bravely and cleverly sawing off the antler of one of two bucks who were tangled up. They were going to die that way if he didn't help them. He used a long lopping saw and, damn, those deer got out of there fast. Seems like next time around, creation could put in a breakaway option to solve this design flaw because... what a horrific way to go: starvation, coyotes or morality-free hunters. Thanks for filming something beautiful that didn't end with one of them being blown away. Props to the camera hunters.

Would you postulate that the 'Sheriff' and other bulls that shed feel a weight relief on their neck muscles? Or sense a 'lightheadedness' if you will? I saw one whitetail bull lose half of his an antler rack while dipping his head grazing and he take off like a bat out of hell...like what the hell just happened. Peaceful and quality video WoV.

They certainly show awkwardness when this happens. When this big guy shed 2 years ago, you could see that he felt funny with his normal threatening gestures.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXbbn4yfnr-kgpo , but Bulls of this size do continue to dominate even after losing their antlers. Another sign of an intelligent species with memory.

Looking at the scene at 1:21 , I can’t help but wonder if elk or deer or any animal with antlers can get an infection or if the exposed area is painful at all…it kinda reminds me of when I bite my fingernails (which I need to stop doing) and I end up making them bleed, which at times can be painful…
@b7eu

Probably not, no way millions of years of evolution would possibly result with infection in something so natural as shedding their antlers.

So, when the antlers are shed, is that an open wound? Or is there a membrane or something covering those spots?
@WildlifeOnVideo
@WildlifeOnVideo Жыл бұрын
It is kind of in the middle.. there is a "membrane" that gradually pushes to lift/break the antlers, but there is also a wound that takes a day or so to seal up.
