Yellowstone National Park has the largest herd of wild bison, about 4,900 animals. It is only a small percentage of the 60,000,000 that once roamed the prairies of North America. Can you even imagine?!

Actually the park service has worked hard at keeping their numbers fairly constant by allowing a winter hunt each year when they leave the park. They have heavily overgrazed Lamar Valley so biologists still think there are too many of them.
