@@tubb1 lol... No, don't get me wrong, they are vital to the overall sound, and in a concert hall you can hear them even when the trumpets are blaring. However, when you're out in the field or doing a show it also depends on how much brass you have compared to woodwinds... The brass can completely drown out the sound of the woodwinds especially while being outdoors.

In truth, drills are done on computers using the music as a "base line"..it is up to the programmer as to what he wants the movements to do...it is amazing...I saw a field drill done in two hours on a computer using music from Phantom of the Opera for a 3-A band..looked so neat...included flag placements, drumline, bandsmen spots, down to 5-yard increments....cost $300 for the entire competition show...
@skilz80983 ай бұрын
@@haukepowers8491 When I was in High School from 95-99 our Band Director had the actual application to do this on his computer within the Band Office. He wrote his own drill for all of our shows. A few of us even helped him, not so much in "writing the drill" but we still learned from him. We would usually help with printing out a master set and then take that up to the main office to have say 50-100 copies made for each member as well as the staff. And this was the era of computers that was pre-Windows XP. The system might have been Windows 95, or 98 towards my upper classman years. Windows 95 wasn't released until my 8th grade - Freshman year, and Windows 98 wasn't released until my Junior - Senior Year. I graduated in 99. Windows XP didn't come out until after I graduated. Even Windows ME didn't come out until after I graduated. So even back then, having software to write, design and layout the drill was a huge privilege, and it didn't use audio for anything. It basically gave you a layout of the field, where you can add positional (marching member by position) points per each page within a given measure or bar for the music score relative to the location on the field. There was no automation of the drill. Every member and each position for every page of the drill had to be assigned. You would start with the first page and from there add a second page by copying the first page, then make the changes on the second page and rinse and repeat that process. To do a full 8-15-minute show back then which would consist of about 100-200 pages of drill wasn't done in 2hrs. It would take him a few weeks to write up the drill. The things we end up taking for granted these days. Imagine having to write this out by hand especially when the band is a Group IV band. When I was in High School, we were a Group I band. The same school, when I was little in the early to mid 80s, we were a Group IV band. Not the director that was there when I was in high school, and not the one directly before him but from a few years earlier, David Dilks is, was a Legend. What he was able to get the high school students to do during the 80s is the entire reason why I even picked up an instrument in the first place: Here is a link to the obituary of the previous band director from my childhood: obits.nj.com/us/obituaries/southjerseytimes/name/david-dilks-obituary?id=9383030 Also, I'd rather do a show that was written or done by hand as opposed to some automation, especially these days with the A.I. generated automation. Being written comply by hand fully demonstrates the artistry within the choreography and the overall quality of the visual effects for the program, of the field show. It's been over 25 years since my last performance on the field and, they were the good ole days! Signed: - A Marching Trumpet Player!

I'll take the trumpets and the drums and leave the rest. I played the trump most my life, but when I was young I wanted to play the drums; my parents were not having that... so I chose the trumpet! I love great brass and great drumlins. Woodwinds are great for concert bands, jazz ensembles, orchestras, but for a marching band it's hard for them to be heard if there is more brass, then to compensate your brass players would have to play at about a 1/4 of their volume limiting them in their playing ability just so the winds can be heard. I can not help it if a flute, piccolo, clarinet or a sax can't shake the heavens; but drums and brass{trumpets in particular} can!

Not a chance! You need to watch some of the top bands in the nation. Avon, Broken Arrow, Carmel, Flowermound, Tarpon Springs, William Mason. This band is decent, but could not even compete with the ones I listed.

Of course they probably couldn't do it at their current level, but I bet with some years of good leadership and band staff they could be really good at least in Texas!
@altx77767 жыл бұрын
Funny you say about leadership and staff. Being a drill instructor myself in the band, I can tell you that we recently signed a new assitant director, a new head director, and last year we signed a new percussion director and another assistant director. The staff team is overhauled almost completely and so is the marching style, and a lot of leadership systems have been changed. Basically the band this year is different than last year but we're transitioning from a fun band to a competitive band, starting from 2013. The new head director previously served as director at Baylor University, Dr. Obado. This show got us 8th in the area finals, which is improvement from 2014 (10th). With the new staff (WAY BETTER THAN WE USED TO HAVE) and the completely revamped leadership organization i think the band will be way better. Not on the level that flowermound, broken arrow, avon etc. are, but the way things are going, they could sneak their way into the state competition in a matter of 4 years. I'm judging this off of the progress we've made since 2014 and the exciting new changes. Not quite sure why I typed this at all.

With this many in a band on the field; what they could do is to have two different sets of uniforms. Each set representing their school colors. For example if the school's colors were white and red; the one set would be red based complimented with white and the other set white based complimented with red. Then they could do a lot more with the visual effects.

@TopDrumCorps4 жыл бұрын
Nope they can’t compete with drum corp style. Also that’s just your preference

Im sorry I meant to comment on another video. I love both styles because I have marched both. Sorry for the confusion
