Great reaction. Those little flags the Turks had are attached to lances used for spearing opposition soldiers . The British, German &Turks all had lancer unit in middle east in ww1. At Gallipoli the lighthorsemen had been shot up quite badly by the Turks so in some ways Beersheba was a bit of payback .the logistics to take Beersheba were very large and included 35,000 camels and 8000 donkeys and 100,000 horses. 147 mile pipeline layed across the desert coming straight out of the river Nile it delivered 600,000 gallons a day for drinking.. 60,000 gallons of water were taken out for the day of the attack by camel. After that they went thirty miles without water to be in position to attack . 90 aircraft were also used in the attack. I had a uncle in the charge who survived the war along with other relatives in the lighthorse, camel corp 🐫 and infantry. 🇦🇺 🍻

Awesome reaction Larissa. Thanks for watching. A bit of Australian culture. We are proud of our Diggers and these events are what we hear about growing up. Well, I did at least. Don't want to presume for others.

the horses are Australian Walers , bred for mustering cattle in the outback where work is long and hard , water scarce

Ummmm you do know that we purchased horses from the USA and Canada, as well as mules. We also used brumbys that were rounded up and broken. We purchased around 60,000 from Nth America, we sent twice as many from Australia. The waler was a general term for all the mount's used by the Lighthorse. The original walers were from India. Any horse that could handle Australian conditions became known as a Waler. No matter the breed.

One of the saddest parts of this epic chapter of War history is that the Australians weren't allowed to bring their horses home due to logistical and quarantine issues. Terrible shame

The good thing about this was the British officers saw how strong and capable the New South Waler horses were they bought many of them and took them to England.

Only one horse made it back to Australia, Sandy. He lived out the rest of his days at the Army Remount Depot in Maribyrnong, a suburb of Melbourne, until he was put down in 1923.

The sad follow up to this movie was Jon Blake, the actor who played Scotty. One of Australia's biggest up and coming stars, on the way home from filming Lighthorsemen he was involved in a low speed car crash. Not wearing a seat belt, his head struck the doorframe and he suffered permanent brain damage. He was a invalid for the rest of his life.

When I was in the Australian Navy in the Repatriation Hospital, I shared a room with one the men who rode that charge. He was a beautiful man, and his Wife was permitted to stay with him for as long as she wanted.

These horses were Australian bred "Walers".... These horses are like nothing on Earth. Amazing, awe inspiring animals that were ridden by some of the best horsemen to have ever existed. Every man was made to shoot his own horse that he had ridden the whole war, (Often their own horse bought from home) at the end of the war, before returning to Australia. Lest We Forget.

The Charge of Beersheba was the last great cavalry charge in history. It was said that because the horses were so thirsty, they could smell the water in the town of Beersheba, and that the soldiers couldn't stop the horses even if they tried.

There were MANY amazing things about this action, one that is not publisized that much is the fact that the Australians crossed the Sinai with their horses to engage in this action. This was considered impossible and was given legend status in the story of Lawrence of Arabia, but the Australians did this before Lawrance and then took Beesheba riding over open plains against machine guns , dug in infranty and aritillery.

I painted sets on this film in 1986. Didn't know much about the history. Was asked to paint directional 'signs' to the location. I was told that some producers driving there asked "...are we filming The Light Horsemen?" I haven't stopped giggling about that ever since.

Thanks for sharing. I remember this movie as a kid. Such a romaticised portrayal of WW1 with some minor sad bits. The awful truth about theses majestic horses was the death of so many during WW1, plus the miserable conditions these horses were forced to live in before death came to them. Animal cruelty at it's worst and humans used the excuse of this just being part of war. Mind you this is not new on how humans treated horses over the centuries but it brings to light how we thought little of horses and their well being early in the 20th century. So cruel it was of us.

Funny...all the concern over the horses. While sad, it would be good to remember that many men died during the war...far more men than horses to be sure.

This is one of my favorite movies and I'm glad to see someone reacting to it. Hopefully more people outside Australia will discover it as a result. My guess is that Scotty was descended from Ulster Scots (or as we call them in America, Scots-Irish) --- people who "migrated" from Scotland to northern Ireland in the 1700's. (There was a lot of politics involved, I won't bore you with the details.) Did you get why Meinertzagen (the British Intelligence Officer) wanted the nurse to write the letter -- initially it was because he wanted it to be written in feminine handwriting, then he also realized it if she wrote the letter it would be more convincing, since it was an actual woman composing it. Also, remember that he wanted an enlisted man - someone "who could be counted on to gossip" - to accompany him into enemy territory. There were plenty of Arabs all around who picked up bits and pieces of information to pass to the Turks/Germans, so he didn't want the trooper talking about how he helped the Major play a trick on the enemy. Instead, he wanted the trooper to talk about how all officers are idiots and this idiot wanted to go look at birds. If and when that got back to the Germans, it would explain what the guy who lost the knapsack was doing there in the first place. Meinertzagen had a reputation for that sort of thing - what today we call thinking outside the box - though a lot of historians think he was better at self-promotion than actually doing the things he claimed to do.

Given you enjoyed this, I'll go ahead a recommend the 2011 film "War Horse" - a Steven Spielberg film where the leading man, star of the film, isn't a man at all... it *is* a horse (with cameos from some notable British stars like Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch). Set in the European theater during WWI.

The horses were called Whalers because a lot were from New South Wales. At the end of the war Australia would not take them back because we have some of the toughest quarantine laws So, knowing how the Arabs and Turks treated their animals many soldiers shot their horses instead of handing thme to locals
