Solo Flight With a Few Surprises | Diamond DA40 (ATC Audio)

Flying solo for the first time was a wonderful experience and everything went as planned. But my third solo came with some challenges and I was happy that I was able to keep cool and handle what was being given to me. No GoPro for my second solo which included a Go Around. I felt it was an unstable approach, but that flight I will just commit to memory.
I wanted to practice steep turns, but my G1000 for some reason wasn't cooperating. I need more practice with the G1000, but as the saying goes, fly the airplane.

Excellent radio work for 3rd solo, even for certified pilot. Everyone forgets to flip the stand-by into active, so no worries about that. Busy and tight airspace around there, reminds me of here in Southern California.

Great job, Laurie! Brings back fond memories. My first time around the pattern on my first solo, tower extends my downwind and forgot me. I was 4 miles away and asked if I was cleared into the R-airspace ahead of me “Oh God! Turn base NOW!” Second time around was normal, then on the third she had me do a 360 on downwind. Good times!

My local airport is never that busy (PTI) although Air Force I dose touch and goes here all the time. I did see a pair of F-15s fly out one day, full afterburners!! Just gave you your 100th Like.

At 7:20 this pilot makes an announcement of being on "Upwind" of her touch-and-go when she is really on the "Departure Leg". This is a common mistake made by many new pilots (and some instructors!). "Upwind" is that section of a standard traffic pattern that is on the OPPOSITE side of the runway from Downwind. Misusing the term "Upwind" could be problematic since some aircraft enter the pattern from Upwind. Just an FYI.

I think you did very well. And you learned how to handle some distractions. Distractions ALWAYS happen when flying an airplane. Expect the unexpected. In aviation, something happens that will distract you, the pilot. And a lot of accidents happen because the pilot forgets to fly the plane correctly. Fly the airplane (which you did). Airspeed and G-forces are the only two things an airplane knows. When you have those two things you can do a million 360s and just chill and not worry. You earned another part of your wings on this flight. Great job-it takes a lot to hop into an eggbeater and fly around.

Third solo. I had about 20 hours in that DA40. It was not a huge situation, but scenario that was not practiced and not a typical flight path. One of the reasons I did not mind having more hours clocked before I soloed.

I flew one year in a PA 28 and my instructor had an offer to fly corporate so my lessons stopped. I had a friend with a flight school that uses DA40s for training. Once I started in the Diamond, I loved it.

It was just on an incorrect configuration from the last flight. This is where you learn to check everything before flight. Didn't need it to fly. Red buttons disengage the autopilot.

The range knob was not working, that’s why I did decide to come back in. But, I flew for 1 year without a G1000 and there are the backup instruments so good to be able to conform to the different situations that come up. Thanks for watching.
