This is the first time I heard my great grandfather's composition of "Lark in the Morning." Thank you! Great Granddaughter of Thomas (Big Tommy) Killeen
@dukadarodear21763 жыл бұрын
Are you serious that your Great-Grandfather is the composer of "The Lark in the Morning?" I would appreciate it if you would give us more details. It's one of the greatest compositions ever made. Most of the tunes in Irish/Scottish/English etc traditions are anonymous but shared at this point. We play many Scottish and English tunes here in Ireland (Miss McCleod of Rassay, Bonnie Kate etc from Scotland and many North English hornpipes) but we know nothing of the composers. The same goes for many of our own great Irish compsitions I'm looking forward to learning about your Great-Grandfather and his composition/compositions.

@@dukadarodear2176 I’m sorry to say I have no other information. This is a story that has been passed down through the family. All I know is my great grandfather was big Tommy Killeen (1828-1907), a blind piper, from Carrowhall, County Mayo. He and his brother, Pat, entertained at the “ big houses.” Pat was a dance master. I’ve heard that Tommy played for Queen Victoria when she visited Ireland. He was married to Sarah McGann; we do not know Sarah’s mother’s maiden name.. Thank you for reaching out. I would be grateful for any information you find. Maureen Herbison Gutkowski 14 January 2022

@shanedog0072 жыл бұрын
Hey Cory! I am not claiming to be any authority on piping, but I do believe what you are seeking for the smoother softer pipes is the Uilleann Pipes, its a rare Irish version of the pipes which plays with the baffles in the armpit and has a pad on the leg for the end of the chanter. I saw nobody responded and thought this might help! Best of Luck.

The delightful part of the Uilleann pipes is that the song starts when the player wants it to, there's no droning intro that starts the tunes on the Scottish pipes.

@olivertenbroeke75925 жыл бұрын
Best place to start is getting your hands on a decent chanter. Whereabouts are you located? There are groups that lend practice sets out to beginners. Aside from that, you could look up David Daye and order one of his penny chanters- very very playable instruments at an unbeatable price, really. From there you can eventually get a serious chanter and a set of drones! Good luck :-)

@@paulcaswell2813 "You forgot the twenty years saving up!"? Uilleann pipes are not THAT expensive. Rumours that pipe makers demand rights to your first born child have been utterly debunked... A full set would set you back anything from €5,000. A practice set, just bag, bellows and chanter, far less.
