Larkham Back In The Saddle Now

Here's the latest instance of Channel Seven commentators getting back behind the wheel for the V8 Supercar coverage in 2010. Here is Mark Larkham having a go in Greg Murphy's #51 Castrol Edge Commodore at Queensland Raceway, his first run in any kind of racing car in almost six years.

Surprised to see he's lifting off the throttle on the up changes, given the cars have a shift cut which enables the driver to flatshift.

When he drove V8SC full time they had a H pattern gearbox

They still flat shifted back in the early 2000's but. The shift cut enables them to flatshift regardless of whether the cars are H pattern or sequential.

Not entirely correct. Plenty of drivers still didn't flatshift because coming off the throttle truly unloads the gearbox and prevents damage, given at the time they were open loop systems were fixed cuts, before the days of closed loop tech with dynamic cuts, so it was entirely possible for the ignition to cut back in before the gearbox was in gear. You'll see heaps of these older guys lifting on upshifts, especially when you're borrowing someone else's car...

Interesting how far things have come. Larco using clutch to downshift and lifting throttle to upshift. That doesn't happen anymore

They still do that. Both using clutch for downshift and lifting throttle for upshifts.
