For those who don’t know, Dylan Larkin suffered a bad back/neck injury a few years ago that had him in a brace and recovering for much of the offseason. Then soon after he came back from that injury early in the 2021 season, Mathieu Joseph dangerously cross checked Larkin up high near the neck into the boards. Larkin punched him and was suspended for 1 or 2 games. No penalty to Joseph. Now a few years later, Joseph hits Larkin high again injures him. To me this looks like a dangerous and unnecessary hit/punch directed to larkins neck. Seems like Joseph had the opportunity to not check Larkin in the head and neck
@darkwarriorgames50924 ай бұрын
I’m a Sabres fan and I agree how does Joseph not get a penalty or ejected as well, same cross check to the head. We had Eric Robinson Board and injure Justin Barron a few games ago and he got ejected. Prayers for Larkin, hope he recovers quick 🙏.

so the problem isn't a lack of a signal, since a very loud and recognizable one was given, and the trainers were alerted in very short order. sounds like your problem is with hockey players. also, if you watch the replays, Joseph basically just shoved him sort of hard but was clearly not intending to hurt Larkin. Not only that. Larkin hits the ice face first as well, so the initial shock from whiplash plus probably badly bruised or broken nose and possible concussion. He was down and out cold almost instantly. What amazes me that Joseph only got 2 for roughing. He clearly crosschecked Larkin above the shoulders and caused an injury to a player, and even as I don't think it was intentional at all, it should be five minutes major in my opinion. The rulebook says that player must be in control of his stick at all times. We could say that he was indeed in control of his stick and wanted to make rough defensive play, but he as a player must know that the neck and head are off limits.

If anyone has ever fought before...it was Kelly right hand that hits Larkin's chin - basically hitting the good night button for some people. The jaw acts as a lever to torque the head when the blow has a lateral component. If the blow is straight on, then the base of the skull is wrenched backwards. Both types of motion can crumple or twist the brainstem at the bottom of the brain or it can cause the brain to "bounce around". First and foremost I am not a fan of the Sens or Wings (Habs fan). But this was no case of the wrong place at the wrong time. A player doesn't just "accidentally" crosscheck somebody in the head. These are professionals, not little league children, there is no way that crosscheck by Joseph was not intentional. And it's not like Larkin was doing anything Egregious in f, front of the net, he literally just wacked at the puck like all forwards do, and as somebody who played hockey would know that defensive players(or forwards) are allowed to push people out of the way, but that's lower down on their body (near the pants) not crosschecked to the face.
@justinbosque39955 ай бұрын

@@jonborton1295 I don’t disagree that Joseph’s hit may have been purposeful, but the degree of hit matters too. When watched at full speed the Joseph hit looks more like any kind of normal jostling you’d see in front of the net. It could be a roughing because he Larkin’s head, I’m not entirely sure he targeted the head, but it’s debatable. The Perron hit was simply vicious blind retaliation that could’ve seriously injured Zub. Perron cross checked him to the head/neck from a running start. Joseph’s hit while dirty, is nothing like Perron’s.

I have no idea what Joseph is protesting for. He's lucky to get only a game misconduct for that. That should be a multi-game suspension at bare minimum. People have to be held accountable when they're clealry deliberately hitting someone, and when that person gets knocked out. Some might argue that it's impossible to know if he was intentionally trying to injure the other player, but you have to assume the worst, otherwise many players will continue to try to get away with accidentally-on-purpose trying to injure other players. This isn't a criminal court system, and there's no need to err on the side of presuming innocence when that would only encourage players to play more recklessly, and would result in more head injuries and other serious injuries. There's also the retaliation to consider. If the suspensions from the league are strict and heavy, then there will be less of an incentive for players to retaliate against dangerous hits. Just look at what happened with the Naslund/Moore/Bertuzzi saga to see an extreme example of what I'm talking about. Things have improved since then, but they're still letting guys get off too easily a lot of the time, imo.

It was when they finally showed from the opposite side where you see what happened. That shove from Joseph lead Larkin’s head to move forward towards Kelly right hand which clipped Larkin’s jaw and then it was lights out! He was KO’d by Kelly’s right hand. I wouldn’t even call that a penalty. It was just an unfortunate series of events of physicality and Larkin’s head was just in a bad spot to be trapped by the hands Joseph & Kelly. In the end he took an accidental shot to the jaw and that knocked him out.

Twenty plus years ago when I was a freshman in college I passed out due to dehydration and general weakness due to a really bad case of the flu. I fell backwards and cracked my head open. I was alone and regained consciousness quickly. I found my roommate and had him look at the wound and he thought we should call an ambulance (I had a nasty cut). When the EMTs got there they determined that since I lost consciousness (even though it was before the head injury), they should follow “standard procedure” and immobilize me and stretcher me out. As part of the work up at the hospital they did some head imaging (CT or MRI not sure which), again because it was “standard procedure.” So I found it very interesting that more than twenty years later (and with all the knowledge we’ve gained on head injuries) he was allowed to skate off on (kind of) his own power. He looked like he lost consciousness for sure there.

12 minutes of broadcast time and a ton of focus on Joseph with absolutely no credit given to him for keeping the area clear and calling the trainer over and showing concern as Larkin left the ice. I don't have a rooting interest in either of these teams. I hope Larkin is fine and I hope people recognize how classy Joseph was after the injury, which--as best I can tell--was more or less caused by heat of the moment hockey and bad luck. Because yeah: we keep seeing these situations where a player is down and there's too little concern for their safety while tempers flare. For an opposing player to recognize the situation and keep everyone away is something that I think we should commend.
