All this shit because he threatened some dude over a merge. Leaving your likely loaded guns out while you are living in a different province also probably pissed the RCMP off. Goes to show you what happens when you show up on the cop's radar while being a gun owner in Canada. The dude he threatened was also likely connected to law enforcement somehow.

What I can say is that for 3 years I had a very severe alcohol problem. Literally I lost control of the situation. If I hadn’t put myself into 6 months of rehab alcohol would have killed me. No two ways about it for the 3 years I drank I was a completely different person. For real. I never had criminal activity but I wasn’t me. It’s sad this gentleman lost his hockey career but for me to stay sober everything had to change. On the 20th of this month, October, I’ll be sober 7 years. The good of who I am is back but I’m stronger, wiser and more compassionate. I love this game of hockey. You are being disingenuous. Not all the charges are related to "registration formalities". Ian clearly did not store his guns safely and that is pretty scary when 1) those guns are owned by someone with addiction issues at the time, and 2) he has small children. And I think it was very naive of Ian to think he did not need to declare an upgraded bb gun that sounds like was decked out with all the bells and whistles when crossing the border into Canada. I am a Flames fan and really admired Ian when he was in Calgary for being such a gritty defenceman despite his size. I am happy Ian has been able to achieve sobriety and hopefully he can stay sober the rest of his life. I wish him all the success with his family, his coaching, and hockey school.

Enjoyed watching Ian play for the Leafs. Damn shame that his story isn’t unlike many other pro athletes. Clubs turn a bit of a blind eye at what the players are doing until they think it may affect them then they push them along. I once had a run in with a player from the Argo’s who was obviously on a path of destruction. About five years later he was my helper on my truck. He never recognized me but I knew exactly who he was. Never said a word to him about that day. He used to tell me about when he played pro ball. Life con be fickle.

Driving around on Fentanyl, tries to get a middle aged dude to fight him after cutting HIM off in order to "defend my turf". Youre a Father with "3 or 4" guns laying around your Cottage "in the sticks" near Kenora of all places. "simply guns being at the wrong address" is not an excuse when kids break into your cottage and steal your guns. Tell a Mother of a dead kid in Winnipeg shot with one of your guns. You say prime of your hockey career except you spent the last "5 months partying and doing Fentynal" . To be fair, your stupidity could have cost multiple lives and ruined people who actually care more than just themselves. The ONLY good thing that happened to you was going to Jail. You said it yourself, "you would not have known you were addicted". It sounds like you may be in for another stay if you are blaming anyone other than yourself in my humble opinion.

Just watched this and that back to back. Ian seems to have left out his multiple relapses. Being in jail was the first time he realized he had an addiction problem conflicts with Tess' story. Not picking sides, but you have to know that Westhead is a solid journalist. Addicts also tend to lie or tell their 'version' of events. Feel for the guy, but it sounds like his legal battles may have just saved his life in the long run. Wish him the best and that he stays involved with his children as that is what will keep his perspective of what is important in life.

@@akashx26I agree with you. As a former alcoholic and former opiate addict, I can attest that we tend to lessen our responsibility in situations. In description about the road rage incident, he was the one who called for the guy to pull over and feels he still is in the right. He instigated it, come on. I feel bad, but he should have kept driving and now he should admit he made a huge mistake. He still doesn’t seem to accept complete responsibility for his actions. You have to own it, to conquer it.

He was on their radar having a prior road side altercation leading to his arrest. The primary issue is that he has a restricted firearms license. The secondary issue is that he let his license expire and his guns were properly registered with the government. If he was able to even change the address without issue is a whole different story. With this situation in place the RCMP went to his house with a search warrant to find the guns, the hit and run investigation that you're caught up on was a lie. The lie was used to find out whether he was at home and to make sure they could execute their search warrant. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

Loved Ian as a player. Even though I hate the fact he scored the winning goal for the USA Juniors when they played the Canadian Juniors during the gold medal game. However the story does seem a bit suspicious. Maybe Ian just didn’t explain it thorough enough but there seems to be something missing in the story as to how we got from a confrontation in a road rage incident to search warrants at his house. It does seem that the guy he road raged with either lied about the incident and used his authority within the police force to fabricate the threats charge or Ian isn’t telling the whole truth. Possibly his addiction to drugs has affected his memory. There is something definitely missing in the story as to how the police got a search warrant for his weapons. I do know the court would most likely have ordered him to surrender his firearms while he was awaiting the assault charges. If he failed or refused to do this the police would have had to act. I am a gun owner in Canada with a licence that gives me the authority to possess the most restrictive firearms in Canada. It is true Canadian gun laws are more restrictive than those in the USA but in my opinion that is a good thing. It is probably one of the reasons we are not experiencing the lunacy of gun problems like the USA. In Canada all firearms must be locked in a safe and the ammunition must also be secured separately. Our handgun laws are even more regulated and restrictive requiring handguns to be securely stored and the police’s authority every time you transport a handgun from your home. If you move you must advise the police of the new address. In Canada any weapon capable of firing a projectile faster than 500 feet per second is considered a firearm and is subject to the firearm laws. So pellet guns which can now shoot pellets over 1500 feet per second are firearms. I know this sounds strange considering “it’s only a pellet gun” but pellet guns are being used to hunt deer in some locations. Just listening to Ian it seems he may have committed several gun offences in Canada. The excuse that it was only a pellet gun or .22, or, he didn’t know, would not cut the mustard here in Canada. Gun laws are taken very seriously in Canada. Let me tell you when I have travelled to the US with my guns I make sure I know and abide by all the laws. You would be a fool not to do so. Regardless, I wish Ian the best moving forward and am glad to see that he is now clean.

I liked Ian White when he played for Toronto, and I think Canadian gun laws are absolutely RIDICULOUS at this point, but much of this story didn't add up. 27 years? In Canada? No. Cops targeting a well-known hockey player for no apparent reason? No. The Crown trying to hold that same person for no apparent reason while everyone else is let out on bail? Come on. Then, he mentioned the addiction issues... now it makes more sense. I hope he gets the help he needs to turn his life around, he has so much potential, and seems like a good enough guy.

Ian White was a good hockey player, and I’m sincerely sorry to learn about his struggles with fentanyl (and the cops). But a number of things don’t ring true here vis a vis his interactions with police. The initial highway road block was one, but the second makes even less sense. White claims they called initially about some vehicle accident involving a white Escalade and are following up. When they get they they ask him to step outside and immediately cuff him. Later he reveals they had a search warrant. Why would not have waited at the door and asked what they wanted, and when they produced a search warrant let them in? 50 squad cars? A helicopter? Winnipeg isn’t LA. I stopped there and perhaps one day will watch the entire documentary but Ian’s recollection of events makes little sense given the police (over) reactions - they appear to have violated his rights a number of times. It’s not clear why they (excuse me) have such a hard-on for the guy. Anyways, it’s all terribly sad. Follow up: Went to your channel and couldn’t find the full-length video you speak of. Pity - this is an important story in a several ways.
