it's cool because it's clearly Crimson, but it's fresh and alive. I love that Adrian and Tony bring new feelings to it, and Steve and Danny totally refresh the feelings. Not explaining it well but I am sure loving it! They are having a blast and that joyful feeling really shines through.

@@markvonwisco7369 Now, now. Let's not say "terrible" - I'm sure we wouldn't HATE it. But I agree, it needs to be alive. I saw the show last night at the Beacon and it was transcendent! Having that prodigious talent there to rejuvenate those 40+-yr.-old songs made it breath-taking. I think everyone there realized how special of an event it was! I'll bet Robert Fripp was smiling (Vai is now doing the work, but can't ever be a Fripp) and Bruford, too. It was partly his legacy that is being celebrated here. Danny Carey is a modern master and so glad he took on this role! Adrian's voice sounds the same, stellar, and his vibe and wild animal guitar still killing it. And of course, Tony Levin, is the Dark Master of the Deep bassman and stickman extraordinaire.

I was thinking something similar. Carey is more of a heavy-on-the-downbeat player than Bruford, but he has the same proficiency with odd time signatures. He just comes at it from a slightly different angle. The Discipline lineup sounded modern in the early 1980s, and it's Carey, more than anyone else, who makes them sound equally modern in the early 2020s

No shade to Mr. Vai, and I certainly can’t play Fripp’s original intro even at 1/4-speed - this is all very very very impressive … but my Lord, anyone covering Fripp only really underlines how irreplaceable Fripp is … or, more accurately, the over-the-top level of virtuosity required to play some of those parts. IF you practiced six hours daily for most of your life, AND you were genetically gifted - I had the opportunity to hold my hand up against Fripp’s once, and although I’m six inches taller than he, his fingers dwarfed mine; also, interestingly, his left pinky is considerably longer than his right - then maybe, MAYBE you could play that intro in time, error-free, nightly on tour without faltering. Fripp is one-of-a-kind, that’s for sure.

I've been listening to these Beat versions and right after listening to the original. It makes it all the more apparent how outerworldly talented Fripp is. And I love me some Vai. His versions get better each show as he gets used to playing them.

@@mousasha- - I don’t know about every tour … I only saw K.C. firsthand once, in September of 2014, and they played no ‘80s-era Crimson on that tour … but on the videocassette _The Noise: Live at Fréjus._ which recorded an August ‘82 concert from the tour which took place between _Beat_ and _Three of a Perfect Pair,_ I believe Robert Fripp was playing the intro to “Larks’ Tongues in Aspic pt. III” in full.

Yeah, Vai is filling some big shoes and doing better than ANYONE else in the world could. But…he’s not playing the crosspicking parts, most of the crucial 5 fret stretch shapes, or the ridiculous alternate picking that Fripp did. He found creative ways to use tapping to get it done and I have so much respect for him. Fripp is on another level though.
