It has come to my attention that the red cross symbol should NOT be used. It is property OF red cross, and aside from that, may send the wrong message leading others to grab your bag, assuming it has medical gear in it. I would recommend using a different symbol if you wish to replicate this bag!

Here's a sewing tip: as you sew around a curve, stop, place the needle in the fabric, lift the feed dogs, turn your work, realign the edges, lower the feed dogs, and take a stitch or two, and now repeat the process around the curve. Tedious, but you get a much more even seam without puckers. I love your projects. Happy sewing!

Also a little hint from a long time LARP healer: You will need bandages that are 4-5meters (4 Yards) long, and some up to a foot wide, because belly and chest wounds are very common in a larp event and you will always be missing fabric otherwise... Another point is: Maybe think of a way to keep the pouches from opening while thrown, otherwise all your gear will fall out mid air. So maybe button on the pouch and buttonhole on the flap and then the string.

The red cross is a legally-protected symbol in the USA, video games don't use it quite as often anymore. It's used to identify actual medical personnel, so you probably should change that symbol on your bag for LARP so that no one gets confused in a real emergency on your play field. I like the red teardrop over my initial ideas of a skull, or a broken bone. I don't understand why anyone would carry a "fantasy medical bag" with no actual medical supplies in it. *facepalm* I agree for many reasons why a red cross wouldn't be appropriate. We actually GET hurt and need medical support. Not sword wounds; but the everyday stuff, poison ivy, heat chafing, food bruises, food allergies and "armor bites" (when your borrowed or poorly fit articulated armor pinches your flesh) I would suggest coming up with a similar broadly used symbol which is recognizable in your PARTICULAR group; and make all campers aware of it's location and purpose. (A chaos symbol?) Not knocking LARP; but certainly you run into some of the same relatively minor medical needs. Perhaps marking the bag with the symbol of the God or religious symbol of your character, which would alert others to the presence of "potions" against curses or such game related catastrophes. We just need to be careful that all know the DIFFERENCE.

on the note of the red cross on white background, many video games have actually needed to change their depiction of it as the red cross is governed by the international committee of the red cross and technically it is a violation of the Geneva conventions to depict it without authorization (though realistically most people ain't gonna be getting any bother for depicting it) stardew valley being a notable example of being required to change their healing item. though it's only red cross on white background that is a violation, change of the cross colour or the backing colour works, hence why you may see white on red or white on green commonly. edit: in addition the enforcement of this law is quite loose, some games or shows will get threatened with legal action and some won't with little regard for popular presence.

Okay, tips from a sewer. If you want to stiffen a fabric there are three ways you could do this. One is used a fuseable interfacing. These are typically iron on, so they are easy to use for new sewers. The downside to them is that they tend to be less durrable and can break down over time. The second option is to sew a layer of siffer fabric between the two layers of outer fabric that you are using. The downside to this method is that is can make everything heavier than you might want it to be. The last option is horse hair canvase. This is lightweight, easy to sew in and can help a project hold it's shape ( such as a shaping a bodice to have a cruve). The downside to this is that horsehair canvas can be expensive. It all depends on the project, how you want it to look, what you'll be using it for and how much you want to invest into it. As a side note, I think Clever could have gotten away with using putting leather between his layers and sewing around them. I've never tried that, so I'm not sure how well that would work.

Espacially in the case of an LARP it is much more dangerous than in a video game, to use the real red cross. If someone is injured for real and someone sees your bag and takes it to the injured person for first aid, valuable time is lost, if its just a fake kit. So NO, DON'T DO IT!
@anarkizt

Absolutely this, DO NOT USE the Red Cross for Fake Medicine. My LARP has that as a hard distinction with the Red Cross being used for our actual first aid team, and a different symbol for In-World medicine. The word “medic” also doesn’t exist in-world, it’s only healers or “channelers” alchemists etc.

Yes, that is an absolutely serious aspect to consider. To make this bag actually usable, he could take at least a first aid-course, where you learn basic first aid skills and also what and how to carry the equipment needed for it safely. In my opinion, in this case it would be a much better solution to make some kind of wrapper for an actual first-aid-kit bag. So even if it looks in-universe on the outside, it is actually the real deal if necessary.

Our seven year old daughter had developed a fever that rose to 105F that really scared us. Many years ago, when we moved to our remote property in a rural and rugged part of Colorado, we learned the hard way about what winters could be like here. The snow was so deep, we could not leave for a few days and emergency services were not available. We called our country mile neighbors down the road from us for help, as he was part of the volunteer fire department for our county. As it happened, his wife had taken herbal courses and sent her hubby up to us to deliver a yarrow tincture on his snow mobile. A drop or two later and about an hour later... the fever reduced and eventually broke! I was a cautious skeptic about herbal medicines until that evening. My daughter made a full recovery and I was (and still am) very grateful! Yarrow grows as a native plant where I am and I've learned that it will grow in most places but, may have to be cultivated and cared for. I'm not a skeptic anymore. Before doing the dive into herbals, be cautious with the information out there. Become aware of potential toxicities to not only humans, but animals as well. Allergy's are a real thing. Get tested. Also, if your wanting to get into making herbal medications, I recommend finding a reputable course and instructor. Cheers!

Along with what others have said about the red cross another purpose was to indicate to enemy and friendly forces who a medic was. Ideally through the articles of war, the medic was to be considered a non combatant. This meant that they were not supposed to be a hostile target. Of course if they picked up a weapon they were fair game. But if the otherside didn't follow the Geneva convention it was a mute subject.

Second thought: probably going to want to add some kind of closure for the larger inner pocket as it will be upside-down when the bag is closed and as you said canvas flexes as you move so there's a good chance of smaller items slipping out of the pocket and subsequently fall out of the bag as you're running around.

Sewing tip: FELL YOUR SEAMS! What does that mean? Fold the edge of the fabric in, then one more time, and *then* topstitch it down. Why is this important? The edge of most fabrics will fray. The felled seam will tuck in that edge and protect it. Or, you can serge it, but that requires a serger machine. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felled_seam#:~:text=Felled%20seam%2C%20or%20flat%2Dfell,flat%20and%20covering%20raw%20edges.

For future reference, when you have a curved seam like the ones on your pocket gussets, if you clip the seam allowance perpendicular to the edge, it'll help the curve lie smoother.

It might be a good idea to put the buttons on the body of the pouch so the flap secures to it, otherwise when you go to toss it to someone the flap can open and the stuff inside can fall out. Also, considering the very real issues of this possibly being misconstrued as a genuine first-aid kit, the better way to do this would to have the bag be a "herbalists kit" (replace the red cross with a leaf or mortar and pestle symbol maybe?) or something like that and stash a real first-aid kit inside somewhere. Also if you are going to carry a first-aid kit please get training on how to use it properly. Being a gun guy I constantly see people with chest seals, decompression needles, tourniquets and nasopharyngeal tubes in their IFAKs that have no idea how to use them. Misuse of those things can cause serious injury or even death.

(Sandi) you could also use a fleam - it is one of the original tools of the Chiurgeon.. In the SCA it is a red fleam on a round, white circle. In heraldspeak - Upon a plate argent, a fleam gules. ^_^

In my campaigns we use the infinite, the symbol of Mishakal (goddess of healing of Dragonlance), since the red cross/ red crescent/ red star, are protected by law. Another idea was to have a place for surgeon equipment, like scalpels, saws and what not. Also, you better keep those bandages clean, just in case you need them. ;)

Coming up with my own design for this, what I'm doing differently is: my flap folds upward so, it's upside down when closed, I don't have the outside pocket, and I'm using MOLLE to affix my extra pouches

The red cross symbol was created etc as part of the first Geneva Convention of 1864. It's an inversion of the Swiss flag (a white cross on a red background). This recognises the historic connection between Switzerland and the original Geneva Convention.

Hmmm. I'd have to stock it with stuff actual reenactors need.(as opposed to making your own potions) One can buy those little period looking bottles; choosing, perhaps, a pain remedy, a cough remedy, bandages and antiseptic, a little bottle of bruise potion. I'd want it to be USEFUL, as well as decorative. Poison ivy liquid, anti insect potion, you get the idea. One could probably hide an epi pen and narcan in the lining. Hey, you don't need it...until you NEED it. There is fantasy, and real life to deal with. It's a great idea, and I have numerous ACTUAL medical personnel who do reenactment as a hobby, and I'm reasonably sure they'd LOVE this idea!

Looks great. When weathering use an acrylic wash of brown or black to dirty it up. When you need to make fasteners for pockets maybe try magnets. You can fix them to where you can see them and the pocket would stay shut “magically”!

Theres already tons of comments about it needing more actual first aid stuff, so I won't beat that dead horse 😂 Definitely a cool bag :) I personally have a military grade med kit in my trunk at all times and during larp I would have it hanging up where it's easily accessed in case of emergency, and always carried bandaids and medicines in my little pouch incase someone got hurt or needed a glucose pill or ibuprofen, but I definitely need to make a med kit to carry around that looks accurate if I ever go back It was also a really cool feature that at orientation before every game the staff would have any EMTs or medically trained civilians such as myself stand up so people knew who to seek on the field if they couldn't make it back to "plot cabin" (our ooc staff area where the actual med kits were)

I have found to keep my stitches straight is just use masking tape along the entire side of your sewing machine. this way you run a strip straight up your needle plate ( the metal plate with the lines that says 3, 2, 1 on them), and keep your fabric aligned with it for a nice straight stitch!

For knowledge bonus points: the universal medical symbol in medical institutions is the staff of caduceus belonging to Hermes, but this staff is associated with commerce and economics. The true symbol should be the staff of Apollo called rod of Aesculapius which is associated with healing and good health, also Apollo being the god of healing and guiding the sun. Why this two symbols got mixed up I don't know they look similar enough that I think someday just made an honest mistake, although some new hospitals have now the right symbol.

Just one thing - technically noone except actual members of Red Cross is supposed to use the symbol of Red Cross. Probably not a big deal but it would be better if you used the star of life or the little cane with a snake around it (which would look even cooler) instead.Other than that it looks great, keep up the great work.

You should see what you think of using "Bone Black" (AKA Bone Char) as a way of 'begriming' things. It's pretty effective in powder form but can also be mixed with a little oil or varnish for other looks. It's hard to find, though. I get mine from a company called Natural Pigments.

Having used messenger bags for decades, I think your shoulder strap may be too long, unless you are going to be wearing a lot of bulky clothing. If its too long, the bag will keep hitting your leg as you walk (this gets old real quick) and if you are running it can swing around and groin shot you (OW!). I found the best height is so the bottom of the bag is just at or above the point where your leg/torso transitions/bends, so the bag is not bouncing around all over the place - it also means you can reach the tiny item you need that is hiding in the bottom of the bag/pocket with one or both hands, instead of having to hold the bag up with one hand while the other rummages around out of sight (where was that needle/knife/sharp thing...OW! found it...)

You know. I've been incredibly engulfed in bandoliers ever since my molded skyrim playthrough. As well my time in the army I had a bandolier. Was always such a use for things you need on the fly. Small bandages or ammo. Random storage. And with you mentioning a mending card or something along that line. I can see a bandolier with pockets, fastened slots for small potions and much more for LARPs. Could even use your pauldron as a way of fastening and wearing it on your body. Just thought I'd throw that all in.

In the '70s I'd swipe a bandolier (M-16) out of the trash on the range and DIY a money belt to go under my shirt, or put the pockets in a vest, jacket, etc. Those huge safety pins rocked, too.
