I wish there was more about Larry Bird's interests outside of basketball. Some of them have been documented but it will be interesting to find out what some of his favorite food, music, art, movies and travel destinations are. Unfortunately the guy is a recluse.

Larry is a video game character, a cheat code. He doesn't exist outside of a basketball court. That's why you never hear anything else about him.

I read a story about Bird and to the best of my recollection it went something like this: Sometime after Bird was all retired, a friend of a friend of Bird's lived somewhere near Bird in Florida. With encouragement from that friend, he asked Bird "across the back fence" so to speak, if he'd like to play a round of golf sometime. They made a date for a day or two later. They met at the course and proceeded to play 18 holes. The friend said thru all of that play Bird barely said a word. The guy was thinking that he must have screwed something up cuz there just was no unnecessary conversation. BUT, as they parted, Bird asked him when he'd like to get together to play again. 😁 Bird apparently appreciated someone who didn't _need_ to make small talk. With Bird it makes perfect sense, I think.

@@jimmyboy131 I think you've just made the argument that there should be a non-basketball related video game where Larry is the main protagonist. I mean he's already the Twitter mascot. What form that game would take I have no idea but I do know it would have to be respectful.

Larry Bird was my P.E assistant when I was in the 8th grade and he was a senior at Springs Valley High School. At the beginning of each P.E. class we always ran 10 warmup laps around the gym. One day, a trampoline was set up on the basketball court and there was Larry Bird bouncing on it. As the whistle blew and we reluctantly lined up to run our laps, our teacher (who was also Larry's basketball coach) blew his whistle, and said "Larry is going to take 10 shots while jumping on the trampoline. If Larry makes any shots, each one made will delete a lap that you must run." Coach threw the ball to Larry and right there in front of me and the entire boys Jr. High P.E. class, Larry proceeded to hit 7 out of 10 shots while bouncing up and down on the trampoline, 35 feet away from the goal. Larry set an incredible example for me as a young boy in French Lick, Indiana that helped me through my entire adult career. If you are willing to work very hard and never give up, your dreams can and will come true. Thank you Larry.

Larry is amazing. Such an intense, clutch competitor who would slit your throat to win and then talk to you while you bled out. Then you hear him now in retirement, he is soft spoken, very humble, complimentary of other players and often directs attention away from himself. Plus he is funny and interesting to listen too. Best of all, he is still unpretentious as they come, not trying to impress anyone, just being himself.

Thanks for sharing this interview. I loved the part where Bird admits to asking all the participants at the 3 point shootout" so who is coming in 2nd?" And after Bird says "Yeah, I did it" there is laughter from everyone. Bird is so colorful and really a good interview and a sense of humility and humor.

There's a Larry Bird story about him drinking a beer other than taking a shot of Novocain to numb the pain of cutting in between his toes to drain an infection. The man's pain tolerance/management was otherworldly.

The most underrated part of that well known story is what Charles Barkley said. When Bird walked in and asked that question, Barkley knew the contest was already over. But... not because Bird had asked, that was Bird, but because none of the other participants disagreed or challenged him. Done. Also gotta love Jordan, watching on a TV with other players back in the arena hallway, pointing out (because one assassin sees a fellow killer) that Bird hadn't even bothered to take his warmup jacket off.

One of the best basketball interviews I've ever heard Bird is so unselfish. He's amazing ... on and off the court. He will tear you up during a game then school you afterwards. Great way to learn the game.

If I'm drafting my all-time team, I'm taking Bird #1...there was nothing he couldn't do, AND he elevated his team like no one else (his rookie year C's went from 29 wins to 61 wins by his presence). You hear why in the interview - he's considerate, deferential, and more interested in pumping up Reggie than getting glory for himself. Class act all the way around.

Tks for this one. For you younger guys that never got to see him... before Larry Legend. * As to white super stars check into any Rick Barry highlights, he was also a legend, in his time. He & Dr. J ruled the ABA... He still holds quite a few scoring records. Ahh and not to mention Dr J & his Nets career which caused the Merger!🏀 That would be a good video to do on the ABA story...

I always wondered why Larry was not celebrating after Reggie's three. Now I know. There was a **LOT** going on that did not meet the eye, and if it scared Larry Bird, it was a serious situation, not a celebrating situation.

Always good to hear Bird and his admirer/ex-player Reggie Miller, but the poster needs to post somewhere in the open that the interview was in, what, 2014 or 15? George had rebounded from the terrible injury. I don't understand the "REACTION" part of this clip. Or, I guess there are others. Oh what the hell.
