I'm from Cleveland and I'm grateful to Lebron for the Championship he helped bring to the Cavs. I can't give the goat title to him, in my opinion players that jump from team to team like KD and Lebron as well as others to form super teams in order to win titles can't be considered the goat. Can you imagine how many titles would have been won if MJ, Bird and Magic would have formed a super team. Their thought process was I want to Beat the best not join them. I would love to see today's player tell their opponents what shot they are going to make and from where on the court,he was going to do it from, then do it time after time. MJ and Lebron both have Bird in their top 3.

“Jordan made you look slow, Larry made you look stupid” J. Worthy Larry’s retirement was held on a off night, no games. The Boston Garden was sold out standing room only, that’s respect 👍 Larry turned his teammates in Hall of Famers with his unselfish passing and assists, if his teammates were having a off game and not scoring he would make the effort to get them the ball and then draw the double team on himself to free them up, he didn’t play for personal stats but for team wins 😎

I’m only a couple of years younger than he is. I watched his entire career live. Probably the best all around player ever. He didn’t have a weakness to exploit and he did all the intangibles you don’t see on a stat sheet. He made everybody on that team better. But due to injuries, for a shorter period of time. He’s like Tiger. Lebron has the consistently high level, long career, with more records and awards. He’s like Jack. Interesting that both Nicklaus and LeBron are from the same state: Ohio. Clutch, definitely, though not always in the post-season. Tended to fall off a bit. One well-known advantage Larry had over LeBron though is that he was hard as _fuck,_ playing right through injuries if he felt he needed to (like that famous Pacers return, carried his team with a broken cheek and double vision from a concussion) and playing the last seven years of his career with a messed up back and the last two with messed up heels. As in, a back that at some point got so fucked up he couldn't even sit on the bench anymore, and would sometimes have to be put in traction for a night to even be able to play the next day. And his opponents _knew_ he had back issues and would sometimes target it to get him off the court. I don't even wanna imagine what this dude had to be going through on a game-to-game basis, but he just didn't give a damn and soldiered on for as long as his body allowed him to, because he loved playing hoops too much. He was hard to the point where he even refused to take any serious painkillers, which looking back, almost seems toxic. In this sense Bird is the polar opposite of LeBron, who always gets shat on for tapping out the moment he stubs his toe.
@jimmyboy1315 ай бұрын
If Larry never messed up his back, NBA history might look very different. Certainly the '90s would've looked very different, and who knows what Jordan's career would have been like. Larry would have played in the league with Lebron, Kobe, and many of the others who came on the scene after his premature retirement. I'm also inclined to believe that Jordan turned out to be as great as he was partly because he had to deal with Larry so many times. It helped him become that much better.

When we're considering whether Larry or LeBron is the better player, senems to me we have to factor in the fact that Larry created, and LeBron learned from, some of what LeBron does. LeBron has said, in interviews I've seen, that it was in studying Larry's game that he, LeBron, began to see the possibilities of his (LeBron's) position...and when asked to name his three top players of all-time, he named Larry among them (I'm not sure, because it was a while ago that I last saw that interview, but I'm thinking Bird was the first of the three players he named). I was really impressed that you mentioned, more than once, that some of LeBron's and MJ's play came after Larry's-- I've heard both of them give him credit where many young reactors seem oblivious to even the possibility that NBA players are often, if not always, students of the game who have learned from those who came before, and incorporated what they've learend into their own games. I've heard MJ more than once say, for ex., that he learned his trash talking from Bird. I was really glad to hear you say that it's untrue that Bird wasn't athletic. Everyone's been saying that for years, and it drives me nuts. It seems they come to that conclusion based on some notion that the only factors that count in athleticism are how high someone can jump and how fast they can run-- with no regard whatsoever for things like hand-eye coordination, footwork, ball-handling (notice the amazingly quick release on many of his passes, including his full-court passes, among his many other dazzling ball-handling moves), IQ, timing, creativity, pace, wit-in-the-context-of-movement-and-the-game...and on and on. And I don't know if stamina and toughness are elements of athleticism, but if/when you react to "Five Times Larry Bird was Injured and REFUSED to Quit" (a mind-boggling video full of fascinating facts most folks have never heard), and other vids that touch on these traits of Bird's, if you do think stamina and toughness are elements of athleticism, you'll see him as an even greater athlete, because I doubt he's second to anyone in these. Btw, I've even heard a few players repeat that "unathletic" thing (though others more accurately phrase it as "he's not fastest runner or the highest jumper" which is certainly true...though it's also true that he didn't need to be...and I've seen him dunk and run in situations where he needed to, in ways that make me wonder what he really could have done if he did need those weapons in his arsenal, and had worked on them as he did, say, his shooting). I've also heard a couple of his NBA contemporaries say he wasn't much of a defender...yet he made all-defense twice, and I don't get how anyone who's watched him play, let alone played against him, could knock his defending abilities. p.s. Speaking of his toughness-- in that Pacers game where he fell on his face, left and went back, it wasn't his back he injured in the fall (although I'm sure his back hurt plenty, since it was so bad he had to lie on his belly in the aisle of planes when the team traveled)-- it was his face. He snuck away when the team doc told him he couldn't go back into the game, and played with a broken face (fractured orbital bone), a concussion and double vision such that he said he saw two baskets, and just picked one and aimed at that one. He did all this with no pain meds-- no shots, not even an aspirin; he never took them (and notice he wasn't wearning goggles or a mask when he returned to win the game. Sorry this is so crazy long...Larry gets sold so short by those who didn't watch him when he was playing, and when I run into a reactor who seems to really understand and love the game, and have what seems like at least a partially open mind, I just can't seem to stop myself from trying to set the record straight, in hopes he might get his due from the generations of basketball fans who weren't around to see him when he was playing.

Doesn't matter who was better. A lot of great players throughout the years.

It has been said that Larry made a difficult pass look easy, and Magic made an easy pass look fantastic.

This has been repeated a BILLION times, but it still applies: Pat Riley said; "If I could choose 1 guy to take a shot to SAVE MY LIFE, it would be Larry Bird." The conversation at Forward begins with him. He's at the top.

To me, Michael Jordan was a combination of Magic, Larry "Legend" and Dr. J.

Larry and Magic were about equal, just different positions, and I was a Bird fan.

IMO, Magic & Larry resurrected the game of basketball...My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted...What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who wasn't only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, football, baseball, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, & what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique & gifted players, I ever watched! I would love you to react to the video, Larry Bird STORIES that prove he's the BEST TRASH TALKER, told by NBA players: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGislWtuiZp3htWa if you haven’t already seen or reacted to it 😊

bird was a better touch passer and outlet passer, AND he DIDNT CONTROL THE BALL. the most assist in history by a player that DIDNT DOMINATE THE BALL. Magic tho, 11 assists per game for his career..

A great point and why I never see Larry Bird when I watch Doncic play. Doncic has the ball constantly.

@@trhansen3244 yea man I dont like when players hold the ball and stop the offense. Melo did that on the knicks. I think Bird was the best off ball player EVER.. also great post up and iso player.

Larry Bird hands down

Really cool you showed respect to Bird's athleticism. Now, granted, he had an average vert in his prime and his jumping ability was severely limited later in his career (late '87 season until he retired in 1992) due to a chronically bad back and two ruptured achilles tendons, for a 6'9" power forward, he could move. He didn't have explosive movements, but he was incredibly precise in his movements and his hand-eye coordination was some of the best ever - arguably better than Jordan who we all know was elite. I was a 90s kid so Jordan was my guy and I missed Bird's prime, but if you go back and watch some of his games - early 80s but especially 84'-86' - it's one of the greatest stretches in NBA history. He would just pick teams apart with his diverse skillset and his high basketball IQ. And yeah. I agree with you that if he stayed healthy, he would have been able to challenge Jordan for the GOAT title. Bird is not the GOAT but he's up there.

Bird shot damn near 50/40/90 for four years in a row also was one steal away from a quadruple double after the third quarter and sat the rest of the game because he did enough damage he said . Larry Legend didn’t care about stats he wanted to win . Watch the 1986 Celtics videos they dominated

I totally agree with all your comments. Also, please keep in mind Bird is most often compared to Jordan, Magic, James. But, Jordan & Majic were guards. Bird excelled as both a small forward & guard, plus he was a double-digit rebounder. Thank you for your intuitive reaction! 👍
