It was almost unfair.

To buy Celtics tickets in the '80's, you stood in line for a day or two and they sold tickets for the entire season. One year I got in line at about 5 am. The line was about 2 blocks long and growing. We got into small groups and got to know each other. By late afternoon I noticed a new face in the group behind us. A few minutes later this guy was in our group. A few minutes later I noticed he was in the group in front of us. He was scamming his way to the front of the line or so he thought. I tapped him on the shoulder and told him he was behind me. He was pissed, but too bad. A few minutes later, he tried it again. Once more, I tapped him on the shoulder and told him to get behind me. Well, 5 pm came and I was in the front of the line. I was the last person they let in to buy tickets. He had to come back the next day. I can still hear him cursing me. lol
@titletownakaboston39099 жыл бұрын
I have no reason to lie about this. It was the Bird era. They were big Celtics fans in Boston. Everyone wanted to see them. Why would you get mad about this? It's no big deal.
@titletownakaboston39099 жыл бұрын
Let me clarify that statement. They were getting ready to close for the day and I was the last person for the day to buy tickets. The rest of the people were given numbers according to how they were in line. For example, the first person in line after me got #1 so that when he returned the next day, he was #1 in line. I really don't understand why you're getting so angry over this. There is really no need to. I don't follow basketball like I used to, but I do know you have a great team this year. Celtics won. Then the Lakers in 85, Celtics in 86 (their best team & one of the best 2 or 3 EVER). Then the Lakers won in 87. They had got Len Bias in the draft, but he died. Bird did NOT have a bunch of Hall Of Famer's surrounding him when he came into the league. His first title, McHale didn't even start. Although I loved Parish, it's not like anyone was scared of him. Same with his other teammates. And Jordan did have a much better supporting cast than people like to admit. . .It's nothing but a B.S. excuse by Jordan fans. I grew up going to Celtic games alone as a kid, in the old Garden. I've seen them all...from the Jones boy's to Rondo. Bird is the best Celtic ever. Perhaps best player of all time, with a strong challenge from Oscar Rodertson. I mean averaging a triple double for a whole season seems unfathomable, but the Big O did it. Man he was smooth. When I would watch Larry play, I actually was happy and sad at the same time. Happy that I recognized his greatness...sad that I knew that it was meteoric, ands someday would end. I can still feel the vibe of game day though...the way he orchestrated his and his mates performance. The ultimate Maestro of the Hardwood...icewater in his veins, and something to prove each and every night. He was driven. Thank you LB...go Pacers!!!!
@wiffhead10 жыл бұрын
why do you say that? One thing was that he was an expert at using his body to make room for his shot, and to get rebounding position. His floor spacing was also top rate. I was amazed at what he could with what seemed a conserve energy approach to playing the game.
@wiffhead10 жыл бұрын
That could be a factor in his scoring total, but he was so fundamental with passing and getting rebounds. I guess that is whyI respect him so much. The lost art of passing and boxing out...using his wide body to create space. He achieved more than he should have for someone his size, by using his head. Also, there have been several periods of no defense in the NBA. Through it all,he is the only one to achieve the trip doub ave. It's like saying Carl Yaz didn't have a great year in 67 because he played in the live ball era. Oh really, then why hasn't anyone done it since then? A case can be made for steroids too...in both sports. That trip doub and triple crown are testaments to greatness for me. Thanks.

Micah Sharon sadly Russell was not even close to being loved in boston. which is a fucking damn shame considering he is the greatest celtic of all time
@Milordvega3 жыл бұрын
Ted Williams mostly wasn't loved. But certainly Bird and Orr were. Cousy and Havlicek. Brady when he was there. Not too much Bill Russell despite his titles. A pity.

It's a shame Dominique played on so many average to bad teams. He tried to will his team to a championship against one of the all time great teams and came up a little short, no shame in that. What competitors the NBA had back then. Zack Randolf reminds me of Bird only in the way neither of them are high jumpers but can still punish you offensively with great timing and moves.

Lotta people don't remember when they watch Bird from 1987 on, how much pain his back and feet were in! A lotta these big games, he spent the night in the hospital in traction so he could be in less pain the next day! Stories like that make people realize just how tough he was! And if they needed him, he'd play 46 to 48:00!! Bird told Bill Simmons he thought seriously about hangin it up from 1987 on!! He just couldn't take the pain after awile! So can anyone even imagine a Bird with no pain!! Scary thought!

Most people that diss Bird and McHale are either Laker fans or African-American... i hate to say it but even Magic Johnson had to tell black people just how good Bird was.

Celts fan here - Wilkins was the human scoring machine. He was so exciting to watch. I watched this game live...it was awesome.

McHale did a great job of setting the scene for Larry's epic 4th Quarter. Blocks, 30+ points big rebounds etc.

What's even more amazing is the fact Bird's health at this point was horrible and he still went out and kicked the ass of one of the greatest athletes to play the game. . . Imagine what Dominique could have or would have done with a bad back (that needed surgery), bad heels (that needed surgery), and wasn't that great of an athlete to begin with? I doubt he would've even been in the league with those injuries.

Chris Kavanagh Winning by 2 pts and letting 'Nique put up 47 is a looooonnnngg way from kicking anybody's ass.

That's irrelevant

Joe Dick "irrelevant"? That's the only thing that counts! LOL, what the hell are you talking about?
@joedick87799 жыл бұрын
No idiot, when you say "kicked his ass" it implies that he beat him and the hawks badly, your clearly to fucking stupid to understand this concept, thus your failing to acknowledge it in your previous retort. Maybe it's my fault for not putting it in language you understand, so let me rephrase it, duh duh duh, duh duh, duh duh.

The fact Dominique won three games in this series and almost went on to face the bad boys is incredible..nice run this year for him...he was truly in his prime at this time.
@John1918200412 жыл бұрын
there was a game in '86 that Larry decided to play left-handed only as a challenge to himself. NO other player, not Jordan, not lebron, would even consider that. Bird scored 47 in that game, left-handed only for 3 quarters, then dropped the game-winner with 3 seconds left in OT. Try doing *that* lebron. yeah I thought so-- wouldn't have the balls.

Even the most athletic and best defenders can't seem to find a way to stop him or to defend against him regardless of the team he's playing. Certainly not the most "athletic of all time" but definitely the GREATEST OF ALL TIME.

The NBA was so enjoyable back then. Low post game, defense and passionate fans with great rivalries. The modern NBA imo isn't as enjoyable to watch. The players and talent of today are off the charts but tge game isn't the same.
