This song ranks right up there with Jeff Beck - Cause we've ended as lovers and Shawn Lanes - Epilogue for Lisa. Beautiful tone and touch.

I like that comment Rick . Just think how many years this gentleman has made music for many ensembles. His creations , everyone should hear. On a other note, it’s quite a different sound Larry gets here. I noticed he plucks the guitar string on the up movement of his plectrum. So so creative beauty😍🇨🇦🇺🇸

Back in 1987, when I was infatuated with speed demons like Scott Henderson, Bill Connors, Edward Van Halen, Ynwgie Malmsteen, Allan Holdsworth (but I still had David Gilmour and Steve Hackett in my heart), this song proved me, once again, that you do not have to be a shredder at all, to be able to express yourself articulately and profoundly on your instrument.

vampiroangelico Larry carlton is quite the speed demon too.. But he chooses to slow it down instead of shredding.. Well.. Most of the time..

It's difficult to add to the comments already made, but this is just about the most heart-wrenching piece of guitar playing I've ever heard. Only two people on earth can do this ...... and that's Larry and Jeff (Beck). The two most complete masters of electric guitar there have ever been.

In terms of feel, if not melodicism, Mike Landau can do that sort of buttery tone and heart stopping vibrato thing on a level easily comparable to Carlton. He can also go completely the other side of the spectrum and make the guitar sound like a feral, angry animal like almost no player I've ever heard. Regardless, there's no point debating this; I was a huge Carlton fan back in high school, and I know his playing as well as anyone's. I can still play both Kid Charlemagne solos note for note. I'm just not as into light fusion as I used to be, so his solo stuff isn't generally my thing. Except for Don't Give It Up. I'll always dig that tune!

I personally believe that in this piece, we just saw how a true master plays the instrument: with absolute tonal command, that less can be more, that it is not the instrument but the player that counts, and that the composition is the canvass with which to paint a rich blend of texture, feel, balance and grace.

In my eyes Larry is a God, and IMHO he has never been better than at this time. There are and have been many gifted wonderful musicians and Larry is right up there with the best. His timing, feel, creativity and technical ability are exquisite. I don't cry easily, but this piece brings tears to my eyes every time, pure genius. Young guitarists with talent should study this man carefully, this is what they should aspire to. Those of us less gifted can only admire.

I was in attendance at The Baked Potato on the night this was recorded. The song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it...especially the sustained note around 2:14 and the notes that follow. But the entire song is priceless. I believe on the CD version you can hear the friend I went with yell "Yeah!" at the end of the song. I remember that the cover charge was a little higher than usual (I believe it was $20 instead of the usual $10-$15). Someone a the front door questioned the higher than usual cover charge. The guy collecting the money simply smiled, shrugged his shoulders and said, "It's Larry Carlton." A cleaner, longer, audio-only version is also posted on YT

I've been listening to Last Nite for over 30 yrs... and finally stumbled on this video here on YT to see how his fingers are creating these otherworldly sustains, harmonics, and controlled feedback. All played with eyes closed. I've seen LC over 10x in concert and this song is always the highlight for me, usually reserved for the encore or last part of set list. This is one of the most emotional and gut-wrenching songs and performances by LC in my book. Timeless and always heartbreaking!

This song takes me back to a girl I knew. Tracy Streblo in ohio. We hit it off on day 1. Took as many classes together as we could just to be with each other. All of our professors knew we were a thing. We spoke words without a sound. This song is what I felt with her. Often wonder where she is, how's she doing. Tracy, if your out there, this is Tom from Jeff Tech, remember?😅❤❤

Agree about the lyricism and beauty in this performance. Larry becomes one with his instrument and uses it's nuances to create a beautiful, emotional 'voice' for a this ballad. Jeff Beck comes from a very different musical place, but does similar wonderful things with ballads. They're about the only two guys who can rouch this type of stuff, this way. All melody, magic and nuance- no flash. Jeff still records melodic ballads. .Wish Larry would. again. This song is decades old- and wonderful.

So beautiful. I got the tutorial video on vhs about 30 years age to which this plays over the end credits. I realised then that Larry is easily the best guitar player who ever lived. I was aiming to improve the technical side of my playing, but he made me see that it doesn’t matter. Never seen a guitarist with a more natural feel. Slow or fast.
