Part 7: • Larry Holmes on Losing...
Part 5: • Larry Holmes on Beatin...
Part 1: • Larry Holmes on Droppi...
--------
In this clip, Larry Holmes started out by revealing how he invested the $10 million he won from his fight against Gerry Cooney, as he explained that he put the money into real estate that returned a good profit. From there, Larry spoke about his fight against Michael Spinks, which he feels he won. Larry explained that he had a 48-0 record, and he believes that although he felt like he won against Spinks, the judges said he lost because they didn't want to see him surpass Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record.

Jersey Joe Walcott said something bad of Marciano. It was a mistake by a cocky arrogant boxer. Then they met. Marciano knocked his head off twice in two fights. So Larry Holmes could have beat Joe Louis. I don't think Holmes could have beat Ezzard Charles or Cockell or Walcott. Ironically Holmes won most of his fights by votes. Marciano knocked out most of his opponents.

The time of his reign as heavyweight champion is why he was overshadowed. He came after Ali and before Tyson...not to mention he really didn’t have a persona. In my opinion, those are the reasons why his greatness isn’t acknowledged ... if you go back and look at the fights this dude probably had the greatest jab and technical ability of any heavyweight. He’s most definitely one of the greatest heavyweights of all time.

He could have done more to establish himself. He beat Norton in a very tight fight to win the title when most didn’t consider Norton the real champ. He should have rematched the dude and beat him clearly, especially as Ken was quite old already. Holmes had a habit of avoiding rematches with guys that gave him trouble. He fought in an era that was considered weak and yet he avoided a string of tough challenges ( Dokes, Thomas, Page etc). Great fighter no doubt, but the lack of respect he gets is partly his doing.

Larry, as did all of the others, you would've lost against Marciano, as would've both Spinxes, Tyson, Lewis, Douglas, ect. the only threat to Maricano would've been Ali in Ali's prime, and it would've only been a decision if Ali stayed clear, which he only did (stayed clear) in his prime. Douglas on his best shape and technique-practiced night, may have decisioned Marciano, probably not. proven to be the best; Marciano.

Marciano was respectful of his fellow boxers champion or not. He would have never spoke about a champion like that, "carry my jock strap." It was a foolish statement then as it is now. Larry would have been better off saying I was upset in the moment and I said something stupid. Lets not forget an older Frazier in a sparring session broke 3 of Larry's ribs and he didn't need to outweigh - outsize Larry to do so. Marciano was not 5'2 he was 5'10 and close to 200lbs. It's fine to think you would win, what's not is the lack of respect for a past champion and especially a deceased one at that. If you're a champion, act like one.

I agree. Marciano was 190-200lbs fighting weight. Not big by today's standards, but he knew how to punch. Ali himself said he didn't know if he could beat Marciano in his prime. And that Marciano possibly could have beat him. This was real talk from the greatest heavyweight of all time. A prime Mike Tyson would be a modern Marciano. Very similar styles. In my opinion a prime Tyson is the greatest heavyweight of all time.

@@danwaka5023 Comparing heavyweight champions from different era's is really pointless. It's done to sell magazines or get "clicks" on a website. Marciano and Dempsey were the BEST of their era as were Holmes and Liston. For the record, I don't think Spinks beat Holmes decisively enough to take his title, but that had nothing to do with Rocky and Larry should NOT have disrespected him or his family. To talk "shit" about a deceased ex-champion when he's NOT even there to speak for himself is BEYOND chicken-shit. To his credit, Larry Holmes did later apologize. Holmes was an amazing boxer, underrated chin and skills, but greater legends than Holmes thought they could beat Marciano, right up until they had a ref counting in their face. He might get him in points if it’s a 10 round fight, but once you get past that Marciano is gonna take your soul. Second, Holmes beat an ancient Ali. Don’t play like you beat him anywhere near his prime. You beat a middle aged man with early stage Parkinson’s.

@@TheNYHITTINGACADEMY You’re a funny guy. You should do a little more research on Marciano before you count him out so easily. Go watch what Ali said about him when they filmed their movie and Marciano was 47 years old and 14 years out of the ring. Read about his training regimen. The man used a 300 lb bag. He broke capillaries in people’s arms. He was an absolute nightmare in the later rounds because he simply didn’t slow down. I’m not saying he was a good boxer - he wasn’t. At all. But, he was brutal, dogged, and had more heart and a better chin than anyone to put on the gloves in the last 80 years. He had his face split open and would not let his corner stop the fight. He isn’t my favorite boxer, and I don’t think he could beat a really smart fighter in today’s 12 round matches, but he beat everyone that came at him, and he did it with a determination that few people ever could. And from his matches and footage I don’t think many people could’ve taken a solid hit from him and lasted all that long.

@Hustle Crowe exactly. The 1890s lynching of Sicilians was because the Mafia killed sherrif Hennesey of Nola for making a law of not hiring Italian labor workers. The Anglo whites saw Sicilians as brown mixed race latins and beat up, shot & hung a bunch of innocent civilians. Italians were the only non blacks to ever be lynched in america I'm pretty sure...Northern Italians even classifies South Italians as half Black because of the knowledge of most Sicilians having North African Arabic moor genetics. Alot of us have light brown/olive skin, black curly hair, big noses & hairy bodies..thats not common obviously amongst pure white Europeans...my Grandparents who immigrated here during WW1 told me I'm lucky to grow up in the 1990s where Italians are accepted as white Americans now. Because my nonno "grandpa" couldnt get a job & was disciminated against alot in his neighborhood along with other Italian immigrants.

Marciano's work/training ethic was such that everyone else's was lazy in comparison! Holmes would have succumbed to Marciano's relentless assaults just as everyone else did ! I think Holmes is displaying Jealousy...Why? Holmes describing Marciano's heighth as "5'2" " ? Uhm No Larry he was 5'10" ! Plenty big to knock your rather dumb head into unconsciousness!!! 😆
