@@cs1992 the 70s were definitely the gold standard of boxers (Ali’s prime). There’s probably 3 fighters from that era that crack the top 10. But Tyson was a slouch compared to SOME guys preceding him. I’ll admit that the talent declined precipitously after Tyson left. But Lewis and Klitchko were both probably better than him. Granted I don’t think any of those 3 are top 10 guys

This is arguably the last fight of Larry Holmes' prime and further demonstrates that sans one punch knockout power, Holmes was one of the most complete boxers in the history of the heavyweight division. I’d say he was still in his prime in his next fight against Lucien Rodriguez that fight was basically the exact same as this as there’s no way he lost a round. His prime disappeared quickly after that since immediately following giving two of the most brutal beatings in boxing history he had a split decision with Tim Witherspoon which he arguably lost.

Cosell became addicted to the attention he was getting and made himself the subject of every sporting event he covered; he became convinced that the event was important because he was there, not that he was there because it was important. So in the final years of his career he rarely shut up and just let the event happen; he thought it was far more important that the audience constantly be kept updated on what his thoughts were concerning what they were seeing. He was probably irritated that the camera wasn't always on him, too.

@scott seaver No worries Scott. We are both brothers and sisters in Christ and I am sorry for insulting you too, I am ashamed of myself. I think you misunderstood my comments about Larry Holmes. I'm a HUGE fan of Larry and I think he was totally robbed against Spinks TWICE. The first fight was very close and the benefit of the doubt should've gone to the long reigning champion, Holmes. In the 2nd fight it was not close though and Holmes absolutely crushed Spinks and got screwed. I do firmly believe that a prime Mike Tyson or Lennox Lewis would've beat either man though. God Bless You friend and I hope you have a Merry Christmas. Let's hope for some great boxing in 2021! With NO MASKS!!! LOL I like Tyson Fury much and pray he dominates for many years. I remember this match as being part of a dark and troubling time in professional boxing. This match took place on Nov 26, 1982. Less than a week earlier, Korean boxer Duk Koo Kim was killed in the title match with Ray Mancini. And about a week before, Alexis Arguello was seriously injured in the title match with Aaron Pryor. Arguello was never really the same boxer after. There was outright calls to ban professional boxing altogether by government officials, and the sight of Cobb getting pounded on round after round by Holmes didn't help the sports image or reputation either. Probably the reason that Cosell walked away from professional boxing altogether after this

Good riddance. Cosell was an arrogant arse and not that good of a commentator. Boxers entered the ring to fight. People entered the venue to watch boxing. This wasn't tiddly winks and the fighters weren't there for humanitarian reasons. Note Cosell's commentary was about himself and not the fight. Tex Cobb got clobbered by one of the GOAT, but he kept coming forward and he did throw good punches. With his reputation in the Shavers fight and having endured even harder punches, he kept willing himself on to a victory when Shavers punched himself out and was out on his feet from exhaustion. It is no wonder the Texas referee allowed the bout to continue. The responsibility for the fighters health started in his own corner. They are the ones who failed Cobb.

On what grounds did Cosell think that the referee should have stopped the fight? Cobb never stopped coming forward, never stopped throwing punches. Yes, he was outclassed- but so was Mike Weaver until he rendered John Tate unconscious. There was zero reason to stop this fight simply because it was lopsided.
@chrisconley8583
@chrisconley8583 4 жыл бұрын
John Jamele the theory I have heard about Cossell and this fight is that he was done with boxing anyway. Watching boxing PPV was very much part of this time. They’d have live cards at arenas across the country and then show a big main event on a screen. That was beginning to change. Boxing was going to be televised PPV into people’s homes. ABC was not going to be a part of that future. That meant Cossell doing boxing was on its way out. The basic theory is that Cossell behaved like this to piss in the pot, on his way out the door.

THIS version of Holmes at 33 would beat ANY heavyweight past and present in my view. He would have to be 50/50 against them all. Holmes was hitting on all cylinders in terms of his skillset and ability to execute with pristine precision. He has every single ingredient required to be a top 3 all time ranked Champion. And MASSIVE RESPECT to Tex Cobb. The man may have been marginally skilled but he had tons of Toughness and HEART. Two qualities you just can't teach. To be able to go the distance with a peak Holmes and take that kind of punishment and still go out swinging in the 15th round going for it, is admirable indeed.Even better was how Holmes came to have sincere respect For Cobb and form a friendship that lasts right to this very day. There's a hilarious video on KZbin where an honor is being given Holmes from some venue and Cobb shows up to roast and praise his buddy with Some of the best comedic moments you'd ever want to see. Those were the days when men were men and jokes were taken in good spirits without so much ultra sensitive nonsense like you have today.

Cosell wanted the fight stopped, but there wasn't a point at which the ref could legitimately say, "That's it, Cobb is defenseless, he can't put up a fight anymore." Cobb was outmatched, but he had the best chin in the history of boxing. And he was landing power punches throughout the fight, even in the 15th round. A ref can't stop the fight under those circumstances. Cobb had ZERO quit in him. One of the toughest fighters of all time!

The ref could have called the doctor over to access Cobbs condition between rounds . The ref isn't a doctor , so he should of put the health condition of a boxer in the decision making of the doctor . If the doctor cleared Cobbs to continue fighting then the liability would be placed on the doctor and not solely on him . If I was the ref and knowing that a boxer had recently died from their injuries I would have been calling on the doctor consistently between rounds until the doctor gets the message to call off the fight .

80 years before this fight, Cobb, as Cosell said in the pre-fight piece on Randy, would have been a dominant fighter. When stamina was king and championship fights would go 20 rounds, it wasn't so much the ability to move, box and punch but your toughness and ability to withstand punishment that made the difference. A fight between Cobb and Jim Jefferies would have been a brutal affair. Cobb's chin was legendary. It's amazing how some boxers can get suffer one tough fight and beating, never be the same (See Meldrick Taylor) and end up a punch drunk mess for the rest of their lives and some, like Cobb and Duran, absorb enough punches in their fights for 3 boxer's careers and have no noticeable health defects, even into their golden years. As for Cosell, well you can rightly criticize his narcissism but boxing has always had larger than life characters who promoted and enhanced the popularity of the sport and never laced on a glove. You can make a compelling argument that boxing on television and elevating it to the level we saw in the 80s and 90s, owes a lot to what Howard did in the 60s and 70s. The sport today could certainly use his large shadow to get it back to where it should be.

Randall Cobb had 51 fights and only 7 losses. He lost to Michael Dokes, Buster Douglass, Larry Holmes, Ken Norton and a couple others. Cobb was a legit contender. This was Cosell's final pro boxing match; he worked the 1984 Olympic boxing tournament, however. He was done on MNF after the 1983 season. He was basically put out to pasture in 1985 when ABC chose not to use him for their World Series broadcasts. Although it seemed much longer, Cosell's career as a big-time network sports announcer only lasted about 20 years.

Cosell stopped doing boxing voluntarily, because he was disgusted with the sport and this fight was the last straw. In his book - "I Never Played the Game" - Cosell claims he left MNF despite ABC begging him to stay with the show. He devotes an entire, lengthy chapter to MNF, dissing Gifford, Meredith and everybody else on the planet. The guy was so hateful and sensitive. I'm no fan of his, but I think it's clear he left the field voluntarily - he wasn't put out to pasture.

@@humanbeing2420 Good riddance.

Holmes biggest problem was fighting the media which was the only "real" kayo loss of his career. Holmes vs Ali was really the passing of the torch or lineal championship (Ali retired with that title with a win over Spinks although Holmes was WBC champ). But because the media did not like Holmes, many of them wrote that Holmes beat an old suffering man. They should have written Holmes was in a no win situation because he had to defeat his teacher/mentor to be recognized as the Lineal Champion/Ring Champion/Man Who Beat the Man because his WBC title was no better than the WBA (although Holmes defeated the reigning WBA champion Weaver). When Cooney arrived on the scene, the media put Cooney on the cover of magazines with actors etc. Cooney, a challenger, appeared on a soap opera and in commercials. Meanwhile, Holmes family was being terrorized and racial intimidated! Ali fights Evangelista, Shavers, Norton, and Spinks and he is the greatest. Holmes fights the same guys and they are now bums. Tyson is praised for what he did to Berbick, Smith, and Frazier. Holmes fights the same guys and the media claimed they should be recognized as exhibitions, not title defenses. When he came close to tying Marciano's record, the media instigated the situation which possibly resulted in Marciano's broter rooting AGAINST Holmes to match his brother's record. Tyson is praised for Unifying the titles, but Holmes is blamed for not unifying the titles against Gerrie Coetzee because a judge ruled against it. Holmes spoke out against Apartheid, but we know him more for saying,"Rocky Marciano couldn't carry my jock strap!" thanks to the media. The sports writers and media did an injustice to Holmes. They would bait the guy during press conferences and get Holmes to go off! Holmes could not laugh it off like Ali. When attacked by the media, Holmes fired back and unfortunately the media got him back in the press by misleading fans or spinning his achievements in a negative fashion. I ask this question, why didn't anyone criticize Pinklon Thomas for giving Witherspoon a rematch? What happened to Dokes vs Page? Why did Greg Page get a title shot against Cooetzee when he lost to Berbick, Witherspoon, and Bey? How many of the other 80s heavyweights gave rematches? However, we blame Holmes for not giving Norton a rematch. This is the same Norton who did not give Jimmy Young a rematch. But yet, we hold this against Holmes. Holmes lost to Duane Bobick in 1972 and by 1982 when Holmes has already broken the record for most kayos in title defenses, the media reminds us that he crawled out of the ring in 1972 against Bobick so be on the look out! Holmes was a novice and was barely an adult at the time, but this is held against him by the crappy sports writers. People like Gil Clancy wasn't going to use his platform to tell viewers that he was wrong about Holmes. It is easier to keep saying that Holmes is a fluke and fighting bums. Holmes TOURTED Cobb for 15 rounds. However some sports writers wanted us to remember Holmes as a fraud who did not have that knockout punch like Tyson although I think Holmes pounding guys with the jab and destroying their retinas ala Shavers and Leroy Jones late stoppage was more dangerous and worse than a Tyson quick kayo over a Carl Williams or Tony Tubbs.

Exactly and Howard was freaking pissing me off crying and talking so much shit against Tex and the ref. Yeah he was getting beat but he was actually never wobbled or in any real trouble. He kept fighting the entire time and protected himself (just not well) but it wasn't because he was out on his feet. Howard was so disrespectful to Cobb smh

It is pretty clear that Larry's prime began with his fight against Leroy Jones and ended with this masterful performance against Cobb. For those who question Cobb as an opponent, he beat an aging Earnie Shavers, lost a razor thin decision to an aging Ken Norton, gave a young Michael Dokes hell in a decision loss, and dominated former Number 1 contender Bernardo Mercardo. Holmes was simply a great fighter and arguably the 2nd or 3rd best heavyweight in boxing history.

Even though Cobb was getting hammered throughout the entire fight, he was never really hurt and kept on going forward. The referee made the right call by not stopping it. I also give Holmes a lot of credit because he tried keeping the punishment to a minimum; he could have done so much more but was showing restraint.

Sad you feel that way cause his and Ali’s interviews were classic! When cameras rolled it was a show but behind the scenes there was a close relationship.

Anyone notice how both Holmes and Cobb's demeanor and style of speaking during the interviews is different than the common boxer, or anyone for that matter, today? They were serious, professional, didn't cuss and swear, conducted themselves appropriately in public, were articulate and throughtful - just really different from today.

Love the fact that Larry went to Cobbs room the next morning to complain that he could not eat his breakfast because his hands were so sore. Then Cobb said something like "never mind your hands, I cannot chew"

Howard Cosel was absolutely right about them allowing the beating to go on for so long . A lucky punch isn't what a boxer should be looking for to win a fight , and this is what the ref was allowing Tex Cobb to continue receiving a beating to the head in hopes of getting . I'm sure that Howard Cosell's condemnation of the fight didn't gain him job insurance with the boxing league officials and the TV networks , but he was morally correct to condemn the actions of the ref , Cobbs corner , and the doctor .

Tex Cobb did the Carson show not long after. He told Carson, ' oh I got beat up, but I didn't get beat. " He went 15 rounds with the heavyweight champ and lost by decision. Unanimous decision, but it went the distance. Big grin on his face when he said it too. " I got beat up, but I didn't get beat. "
