The issue with naming a body of water after a nations is that some people believe it denotes ownership. It does not. Mexico does not own the Gulf of Mexico. Nether do we. The naming of bodies of water has nothing to do with which country is larger or more beautiful. It was named, as pointed out, in the 16th century before the United States existed, and just to be clear, America is not the same as the united states. America consists of two continents, North America and South America; North America includes Canada and Mexico. Perhaps calling it the Gulf of America is probably correct, but not for the reasons that Trump has in mind. Looking at the map, it also seems to me that the so called 'gulf' is similar in size to the Caribbean Sea and has more in common with a sea than a gulf. Perhaps the American Sea might be better if we are going to change its name. Personally, I see no reason to start calling it anything other than it's long standing name, nor will I do so, as I still refer to Bombay, and Peking and see nothing wrong with that.
