Love my 1911s. Have been shooting them since I was 12 (44 years ago!). Shot them competitively in NRA Bullseye and when issued in my Navy service. I have met and shot against CDR RJ Thomas, who, as a young PO2 SEAL in Vietnam who defended a downed helo and crew with his National Match 1911A1. When they extracted, they found over 30 dead enemy anywhere from 3 to 150 yards from his position. He was subsequently awarded the Navy Cross. When I shot Navy Matches at Dam Neck in the late 80s and early 90s, there were still frogmen there shooting NM 1911s by their own choice.

Stan Chen magwells are absolutely amazing. Especially his higher end ones that need a smith to install since it cuts the frame to add zero height to the pistol.

How about a video on the evolution of accessories used by Delta and SOF on their rifles? Similar to what Jeff Gurwitch did for Defense Review but as a video series. Maybe an early history, then what LAV saw during his early career and how they progressed.

BRAVO-ZULU!! Outstanding History lesson on how the Unit's 1911 served and Kicked Butt and Took Names! On a personal note, I took the specs that you talked about on a Guns magazine article where you described how you build 1911s during your time in the Unit and I used that as my template to take a Brand New Springfield Armory Mil-Spec NM Serial Number Pistol that I purchased on Sept 11, 2009 and after spending about 3 hours on the Brownells website and relieving my bank account of about 300 dollars I started the process of turning a mild Mil-Spec pistol into a Tac Driving 1911 and I finished the project 2 years later on Sept 11, 2011 when the Nowlin Match Barrel was installed. All the work was done by me and I used STI S7 Tool Steel for the Hammer, Sear, Disconnector, Cylinder and Slide Tactical Thumb Safety and Oversized Trigger, Smith and Alexander .220 Grip Safety and Flat MSH/Magwell, VZ G10 Operator Grips, Wilson Combat 1pc Full Length Rod with 18.5LB Spring and Shok Buffer, EGW Custom Thick Flange Barrel Bushing, Millett Mark II Rear Sight and .185 Orange outline front sight the Very Last Set of Millett Sights that Brownells Sold! Now I have other 1911s with Rails but the Mil-Spec that I build with your Specs is as Accurate and Just as Reliable but it my Special pistol. One of this days I will Checkered the Front Strap I need to get the files and Jig to do it right! :)

I have been shooting 1911’s for over 65 years. I started when my Dad taught me to shoot his WW2 1911A1, and continued when I was in the US Army Special Forces. I was first trained to use the 1911A1 as an MP officer and continued when I was assigned to SF. I used other pistols as well, but nothing beats a .45, in my opinion. I carried one in VN (although sometimes I carried a 9mm Browning Hi-Power), and always felt that as a sidearm, the .45 was going to serve me well. In VN I was initially issued two personal use weapons - a Colt 1911A1 and an Inland M2 .30 Carbine. On patrols, I carried the .45 and a CAR 15 (XM177-E1), both of which worked fine. The CAR 15 eventually morphed into the M4.

By far the best video I have ever seen regarding the modern-day 1911a1. Every minute I thought of a question (to post) it was immediately answered within seconds. I learned something new and had some of my own experiences quantified. The Glock 21 and the Colt Officer's 45 were three of the first pistols I ever personally owned [circa 1992]. The other being a Ruger Blackhawk. I got them all for a steal (ETS sell) and kick myself every day for selling them years later. I finally purchased an Auto-Ordnance GI 1911a1 about three years ago and shoot it about twice a month. After some soul searching I was going to sell in for a new/used Glock 21 or a Rock Armory 10mm in 1911. But after seeing this video I think I'll keep old faithful and remember to lube. Unlike my Ft. Riley ex-girlfriend...

As a lefty my favorite slide stop is the wilson combat bulletproof. Reason is its cut out more and my knuckle doesn't accidentally press up on it when firing causing a early slide lock. My favorite ignition kit is the cylinder and slide kit because i can just drop in a tuned forged kit without any modification.

Great video, love the history from the unit. Kinda odd considering the depth of the 723 clone that the 1911 in the video every other part you were like "it wouldn't be like this". Would be way cooler with a full clone. You need someone to commission one so you have one to use in a video? :) Another video idea I'd love to hear your unique expertise on would be the mp5s of the 160th during the same period. I've been trying to research to clone the gun my father would have had in panama, but every resource is all over the place. With some sources saying they had MP5SDs with full stocks to MP5K with stocks that would extend as they were drawn from a special holster. Unfortunately the historians for the unit don't seem to be big gun guys so accurate info without getting a screenshot from black hawk down is hard to come by.

That’s funny you mention the point ability. My index finger is to short for any double stack . Sig Glock you name it . I have had a grip reduction done still too short .. this is where it gets interesting. A gunsmith looked at me and said son you have a 1911 hand .. finger grip and trigger is like a glove for me .. even the small micro compact gives me trouble.. it’s crazy
@Full_Otto_Bismarck3 жыл бұрын
This has been my experience as well, as much as I try I cannot make double stacks work me. Give the SAO version of the Sig P220 a try if you want an alternative to the 1911, its a single stack single action only gun like the 1911 and I find they work very well for me.
