Larry goes into the history of the 2011 platform, his experience with it while he was at the Unit and as a pistolsmith. He discusses the big improvement in reliability that the new owners have brought about and how the 2011 is becoming more accepted in the tactical world as a duty pistol.

Took my new C2 to the range last weekend. Lubed as Dawson instructs when you buy direct from him. 400 rounds of CCI 115gr and 100 Winchester duty 147gr JHP with zero malfunctions. After years behind some striker guns (still like the ones I have) this was a refreshing return to my 1911 roots but with the modern capacity and functionality. As Farris Buehler said… “if you have the means, I highly recommend it….”.

I am now retired from the Army, but working as a cop. I have been carrying a Staccato P as my duty gun for about a year now, and it has been stone reliable after 4k rounds. One self induced malfunction- I rode the slide with my offhand thumb and caused a stovepipe. Absolutely fantastic pistol, and a huge step forward from STI!

Let me add something about the grip size of a 2011 compared to a Wilson EDC X9 (carry) or EDC X9L 5” 1911s. If someone watching this has tried and tried to make a 2011 feel comfortable in your hand? And just can’t quite close the deal? Look into the Wilson EDC X-Framed guns. Here’s why: All 2011 guns are built around a 45 / 38 Super magazine footprint. There is only so much a user can do to fit the hands. The Wilson EDC X-Frame guns are built around a modern, purpose built 9mm double-stack, mag tube. (Rumor is it’s the PPQ tube). The result is a 15+1 or 18+1 1911 with a DRAMATICALLY smaller grip. Even Die-hard Staccato shooters In my area all get a “oh $hit” look after holding our EDC X9L. The best way I can describe it is imagine a Glock 21 loaded with 9mm. Now compare that to a Glock 17 loaded with 9mm. It can make a HUGE difference for a duty gun. Regards, Marky
@John1911
@John1911 3 жыл бұрын
@@beefnyan in theory I understand what you are thinking, but the reality is the frame dimension and shape of the 2011 stays the same. This shape is at its peak corner at the back of the frame. Specifically under the shooter’s thumb. 1911 users who don’t get the warm and fuzzies working that thumb safety across that double-fat corner, tend to really enjoy the X-famed guns. Finally...longer or shorter triggers on a 1911 function to adjust the trigger fingers at their joint. Not at the back of the gun. If a user is having to slide his or her hand back and forth to reach either a safety or trigger, we are looking at a gun that simply doesn’t fit the user. Because either way, the gun is canted in the grip. All modern semi-auto pistols should and will sit in a theoretical zero-cant axis between the thumb and index finger. Deviate from that and the user is going to have significant natural point of aim issues. Regards, Marky

I much prefer getting magazines for the EDC/SFP guns. They’re MecGar made, they don’t bind up a MagLula, and they’re cheaper. You aren’t spending $60-80 on a magazine for the Wilson.

Ive been soo interested in these. I carried a old Para p14 limited on the job for about 3 years and I shot 3 days a week. Gun ran like a top, it did go back to Para twice to get overhauled because I put about 20k through it in those 3 years. Only reason I stopped using it for work was my employer wasn't fond of single actions and carrying cocked and locked... but everyone I talk to about 1911s hates on their guns. I had 20 mags 3 10rds and 4 were 14rds with +4s and the rest were 14rd mags. Like I said ran like a top.

I built my custom 1911 off a Para Ordnance frame because I found it had the highest capacity options in .45ACP. Remington made some 15 round magazines (luckily they work for me) and I found Taylor Freelance made extensions compatible with Para style magazines (since they make those mainly for Rock Island Armory pistols which use Para frames) that added an additional 3 rounds. 18+1 .45ACP is a lot of firepower. Heh What extensions did you use to get +4? That sounds really cool.

SVI the long time competitor of STI offers a trigger that has a two piece shoe that can have the trigger swapped for both a shorter and longer shoe. Also MBX makes a high quality gen 2 style mag for 45 acp in 140mm that holds 17 with slide lock, also 126mm in 14 rd 45 slide lock.Also I wish you would consider testing a Rock Island Double stack 1911 in 45 and 10 mm. The ones that I’ve handled looked pretty well fitted. They’re built on a forged( according to them) Para pattern double stack frame.

In 1996 I lived in California and bought a brand new HK USP 45, took it home and loaded up both magazines and put it away. In 2009 I moved to Arizona with that HK being the only gun to my name and took my CCW class. I finally shot the gun a week before the class and couldn't miss with it if I tried, in qualification in my CCW class I scored 100%. Now, after being loaded and unused for 13 years the magazines both starting having minor issues, after a while they would not lock the slide open solidly after the last round, I could almost look at the slide release and the slide would close. When I started carrying a Colt Commander XSE and the HK magazines remained unloaded for a week they were as good as new. ;-)

I was able to test fire a (17round) magazine Staccato C2. I loved the size, accuracy and ease of slide manipulation. The only thing that prevented my purchase was the grip. Larry mentioned that the grip had been rounded, but it was not rounded enough for me. The interior palm edge dug into my thumb joint. My hand fits snugly into a large size glove. The (S&W) M&P 2.0, for me, has perfected the double stack grip. Surely, a 2011 company figure it out for a $3k gun.

After putting wolf springs and after market followers in my PARA 20rd 170mm mags they're perfectly reliable with ball ammo, but still useless for HP. My PARA P10 runs fine with HP, but only with +P ammo to keep it from stove piping due to the stiff double recoil spring.

Considering the current market I don't think we are in a 9mm world anymore. 9x19 is effectively impossible to find for most people but my LGSs have plenty of .40 and .45 on the shelf. I shot and carried only 9x19 until this past year when I couldn't find ammo and now I carry and shoot primarily .40 and I've been able to stack fairly deep at not ridiculous prices.
@sportsmanslegacy
@sportsmanslegacy 10 ай бұрын
You think that the thing on the shelf is what people are shooting? Maybe the reason you can’t find 9mm is because it is the most popular caliber and that is what people are buying.
@robertcook3004
@robertcook3004 10 ай бұрын
Bruh that comment is from more than two years ago. And it wasn't about what people are shooting but the 9x19 pushing every other semiauto handgun cartridge out of the market not being true which has been the prediction for about 10 years now. And yet .40 and .45 continue to be made and shot.@@sportsmanslegacy

Now whats up with SV Infinity in regards to STI, i thought theyre together at some point? I'm assuming they use identical magazines?
@joshuabaker5712
@joshuabaker5712 3 жыл бұрын
Quick history. Sandy Strayer and Micheal Voigt left STI due to differences of opinion they had with what STI was doing. They started SV Infinity (SVI). Thry went with a much higher quality, build every part they use in house, mags, ect... their guns are known throughout the competition world as one of the highest quality you can get. At one point their mags were also the best on the market. Then other companies came in and built 2011 style pistols as well and now we have some very solidly built decently priced 2011 pistols. MBX came on scene and revolutionized the mags for the 2011, not exactly sure when they came about. All while this is going on STI quality suffered though leadership and cost savings methods and became well knows as a pistol you would buy, ship to your chosen gunsmith who was known to be good with tuning them and mags before you ever shot it. They stayed like that up through just about right when they came out with the staccato line of pistols, this was before the actual name change. About 3 or so years ago STI finally stepped up and came out with the gen2 mags and once again had probably the most reliable 2011 mags on the market and still does. Then they changed to staccato. The big issue is they missed a huge opportunity in the competition world by not having guns competition guys want. They decided the tactical market was better for them. The general belief on the reasoning for that was those in the tactical world dont abuse the guns like competition shooters do thus they dont wear or break as much. Competition guns will go through probably minimum of 5k-10k rounds a season. So roughly 7-8 months a year. The mags are always being dropped with rounds in them, dirt, mud, ect... And competition shooters are usually very picky about every part of the gun. The tactical side on average just doesn't run the guns like that. Is it a bad thing? Maybe, many not. If the company makes a profit and can put food on the dinner table of its workers then all is good. Hope I answered your initial question.

The other advantage to the new direction is they make 5 different models while when they were doing competition guns they had upwards of 20 different models. Now that they aren’t spreading themselves out, they have a much easier time making the 5 models they do have as perfect as possible.

The ammo shortage really killed the argument that “9mm is the most available” because it turns out 9mm being popular also means it’s in really high demand and in a shortage, demand rapidly outstripped supply. Meanwhile, in normal times, pretty much any normal service pistol round will be available at any gun store. Hell, even now, I’ve seen several boxes of .40 at the local Academy while maybe only seeing a box or two of 9mm ever. Seems like the best round for a major ammo shortage is a round that’s popular enough to get consistent support from manufacturers, but not so popular that everyone wants it. So, for example, a market mostly dominated by ARs meant 5.56 disappeared quickly and is still pretty expensive, while 7.62x39 for AKs are dramatically cheaper.

Isn't the correct spelling of the company Staccato 2011? Not Stacatto.

If Stacatto has the magazines right, I want one. STI pistols won a lot of matches but the requirement that the magazines be "tuned" by an expert make the brand a no-go for a lot of us. Life is just too busy to constantly be tuning magazines.

The XC is a $7.5K handgun in Australia. I have no doubt they shoot, I’ve watched every bloody video on KZbin. My concern is problems that need Staccato people or 1911/2011 people to fix/tune/tweek. Texas is a long way from me 😬

Why would a gun that didn't work be in high demand just because they were the test guns for special forces. Why would you want a gun that doesn't work.

For civie uses I would agree with 9mm is king and most police uses. but for military I think the hotter rounds like .357 sig have a place in defeating armor and defeating light barriers. That being said training your average GI is harder with the hotter rounds. I think the SF types would get the most out of the hotter rounds. where the average GI I would have to see the ability to train VS performance before I would make the change.

.357 sig doesn’t defeat armor. It’s a dead caliber. Even SIG SAUER who brought the cartridge into existence with Federal stopped producing pistols chambered in .357 SIG and .40 recently. It’s a 9mm world!
