She didn't abandoned her child - in fact she sent her to Canada during the war. Vivien herself did not have the best example of motherhood being sent to a convent at 4. Indeed, Olivier said "Only two Christian Martyrs could have resisted their passion." Also, divorce was taboo then so I am not sure either could keep their children. Suzanne loved her in spite of the early years.
