This was about the time I started watching wrestling. To see Larry attack Bruno with a triple chair shot was SHOCKING, to say the least! It's great to hear how this all came about, and it sure did boost Larry's career! Larry was very lucky that Bruno took him under his wing like he did. If one of today's stars had a fan come to their house asking for advice, the star not only would call the police, but slap the poor kid with a restraining order! Anyway, that feud is the first one I remember watching, and it hooked me for life on wrestling! Thumbs up & Subscribed!
@keithpasculli74657 жыл бұрын
And Bruno sold those chair shots perfectly. i remember him almost pleading with him as he was getting his head bashed in; like you said, total;l;y shocking at the time. Zbyszko is the real deal and not as appreciated as he should be.

My family watched wrestling every Saturday evening. I am told that I started watching(as in, paying attention to it) at the age of 3, in 1970. I remember being absolutely STUNNED by Zbyszko's heel turn on Bruno. At that age, I didn't know it was scripted. I remember that huge red X with the word "CENSORED" on the screen, and seeing the pictures the following month in all the magazines.... it was shocking. Outright shocking. It was a defining moment to me, about the "sport" of wrestling. Looking back with perspective, it was perfectly done for the time. Larry got more legit heat than anyone since. Everyone LOVED Bruno. Seeing Larry "do that to our most beloved hero"... instant heat. Heart of the Sun level heat. To know that Bruno set Larry up like that, nothing but respect for him. That was really giving to his student, something many teachers wouldn't.

I have to disagree with Larry on the Bob Backlund issue. People loved Bob Backlund. You are correct when you say that People were emotionally, invested in Bruno, God rest him, that's probably why in the beginning of Backlund's Title reign the People were slow to get on board. I'm almost 50 now, I've been to the Garden to see Bob Backlund several times and each time I went, I had to go very early to get tickets because they would sell out very quickly! Larry Zbyszko was a very good technical Wrestler but in my opinion, not to the level of Bob Backlund. Larry was smart to over to the AWA, he had much more success there being a singles World Champion.

Without question, Bruno Sammartino was the greatest wrestling CHAMPION of all time. Being a great wrestler is one thing but being a great CHAMPION is a whole other league. There's no wrestler since Bruno who can claim to be a better CHAMPION. The fans who don't think so simply never experienced the Bruno phenomena first hand. The emotion the fans carried into the arenas for the Sammartino-Zbyszko feud had to be experienced live to fully understand. I"ve been to hundreds of matches from the early 70's to the present and that feud was like no other. What was in the air can't be explained to a fan who wasn't there.

I have to say, I was about 12 or 13 years old when the Bruno Sammartino, Larry Zbyszko feud erupted. When Larry whacked Bruno in the Head with that Chair on TV that Saturday Night, I was shocked! What a thing for a kid to see! In those days, that kind of thing just didn't happen on TV. We had a Black and White Set back in 1980 and that Blood still looked as grotesque as ever! That storyline was way over the top! Now that I look back on it, maybe the success of that terrible storyline, in my opinion, is what planted the seed for the ridiculousness of today! Cire Nosnor Your right. KZbin: Why Bruno Sammartino hates Vince McMahon's guts. Came back after the Zbyszko program as a favor to his kid to try to get David over at the 1st Wrestlemania. According to Bruno he didn't want to come back after losing the title for the first time in 1971. Wanted to spend his time in Pittsburgh with his family. Vince Senior needed him back, then, cuz ticket sales had plummeted after Bruno had left the company. His comments about not wanting to come back again & again is somewhere on You Tube also. Vince Senior went from the Italian-American fans with Bruno to eventually going after the Hispanic-American fans by putting the strap on Pedro Morales. Then I guess after Superstar Graham's way too brief run as champion ( a bad mistake, since Billy was so over that even a little kid named Mike Tyson was a huge fan which he tells Billy at some fan fest & is also on KZbin) Vince Senior went after the Howdy Doody/Alfred E. Newman fans.
@bulldogbrower67325 жыл бұрын
No, Bruno came back to be indoctrinated into the Hall of Fame because we fans sent him thousands of letters asking him to do it for us. This is the only way Bruno's video library could be released without him bringing law suits on McMahon. The other reason is that he knew his heart was failing. Vince paid him 6 million to come in. That gave his wife security.
