The kind of sad thing about crowd-funding video games is the budgets they require. While it sounds like asking for too much when American McGee asks for $950k to make a game, that would be considered a shoestring budget for a game that will be competing with major publisher releases. I would estimate that a budget of about $8 million would be the bare minimum to make a new, nearly-AAA quality American McGee game. I assume most of these studios would have to seek additional funding, which is probably where some of these game Kickstarters that got funded but never released go off the rails. We get upset (and rightfully so) when a campaign gets over a million dollars but never delivers, when in reality a game like most of these could never be made for these types of budgets to begin with.

A lot of these were really good teams doing good things. The problem is Kickstarter fatigue had settled in, despite all the amazing games we got from the platform, from Wasteland 2, to Divinity Original Sin. Everyone started realizing for every one they got, they got two or three that either never happened or was so bad they might as well not have. So while 1Mil is an honest budget and could have gotten it once upon a time people don't. I don't remember who wrote it but I remember an article that came out a while ago that talked about what it took to kickstart a game these days and it basically said it has to already be in alpha with a downloadable demo, and you are using the money for things like acting and music.

Stil kind of sad to see Human Resources didn't get funded. However as a backer of Planetary Annihilation I can't really blame people. I remember seeing the Kickstarter and like many wanted to back the game, but I didn't because of the many promises Uber made for PA that they never gave their backers even though they got most of them funded. Also they asking price was just WAY too high to the point of it being ridiculous altogether.

Michel venner they went over their head, they were expecting all the animations to be easy, the tentacles alone with take months to animate and if they were planing it to take a year they were greedy as their pay would of been $87,500 if the Kickstarter money went to them only ( not including tax and other fees), that means 16cents a minute per person so your paying the group $2.66 a per minute for every minute for a whole year, no wonder they failed they wished for the highest wage available for not even the best artist and programmers available, or close, thou the trailer was nice, they would probable say it's costed 1.4million to make. They only made a trailer and a concept and expected 1.4million for it.

to be honest, a couple of those kickstarters were led by some shady people in the case for the spiritual successor to eternal darkness, the director was accused of mismanaging previous projects and being a drama queen (he actually tried to sue unreal games for Too Human being a piece of shit) and in the case of human resournces, Uber is simply a piece of shit, before handling PA they were in charge of a F2P game known as Super Monday Night Combat, and despite the fact during the PA kickstarter they claimed PA wouldnt divert resources from SMNC, shortly after the PA kickstarter was finish and the development of the game begun, the updates for SMNC stopped, now SMNC wasnt really popular and it was obvious Uber was bleeding money with it, however that doesnt detract from the fact they didnt keep their word in september 5 2014, after a long period in early access, Planetary Annihilation was released among claims of the game being an unfinished mess, and shortly after the kickstarter for human resources began, so Uber pushed an uncooked game out of the gate, only to pitch another kickstarter for another game that might end up unfinished upon release, not to mention that the development of human resources, if allowed to take place, wouldve cast a shadow of uncertainty upon the future of PA's updates that would hopefully help fix the game, and why wouldnt it? Uber already broke their "dont worry guys, we will keep updating the game" promise once!, all this led to people losing faith in Uber being able to properly lead the development of the game and thats why the kickstarter failed as a final note, PA got re-released one year later as Planetary Annihilation: TITANS, this version apparently fixed many issues with the original game... too bad none of the backers received a copy, thats right, in order to more or less enjoy the complete, working game, backer had to buy a new version of the game they helped fund so, fuck Uber, im happy their kickstarter failed, i have little doubt it wouldve ended in a similar disaster

I just can't feel too bad about Shadow of the Eternals failing. The Kickstarter did indeed ask for a lot, and then the head of the project started another crowdfunding campaign on a different site, also with a high goal, which didn't seem to coincide with Kickstarter's funding, and that second campaign wouldn't reimburse backers if the project failed. On top of all that, it's likely that Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes and Eternal Darkness did as well as they did because Nintendo kept Silicon Knights on a short leash. According to a former SK developer, apparently the head of the project wasn't very good at his job when left to his own devices. It's probably for the best that their Kickstarter campaign didn't meet its goal. As for OZombie, I would have freaking LOVED it if it came out, zombie theme aside. I've wanted an American McGee's Oz since the beginning. :-D

Yes, yes, many people here are like "What are they idiots?" without thinking the alternatives. The total bids change constantly so you can't know until the last time, maybe they weren't sure it's gonna make it, the -28$ is what we see after, sometimes people cancel their bid so maybe it was slightly over (and they might have backed already themselves a 100$ to reach this) and then under, or maybe they thought it's not worth it exactly at 50k, we have wished to be 10-20% over for safety, so if it dies let it die.

Yes, 99% of Kickstarters either drastically underestimate how much it costs to produce something (because they're started by amateurs who don't know) or intentionally deflate the projected cost (because they're started by professionals who don't want to scare backers away by setting the goals too high). As a result, even the ones that do get funded run a severe risk of running out of funds before they can produce a finished game.

I strongly suspect that Human Resources failed because there was such a backlash from how PA was botched so badly. The fact that they initially priced the game at $90 US just screamed "lets grab the money and run before word gets out that we dropped the ball." They did partially redeem themselves by making Planetary Annihilation: Titans, a vastly improved revamp, and offering it free to KS backers, and highly discounted to owners of PA. However, the original release was such a fiasco that I think people simply weren't willing risk that happening again.

I wanna see a more Heavy Metal (more the 80s cartoon movie, but also the music genre) reboot of Battletoads with gritty grimdark themes, can you imagine all the blood and gore, ultra sexy Dark Queen, all the bits and nobs and 40k inspiration. That would be Toadally awesome. Imagine how cool the Btoads theme would fit into that.

Holy fuck, Planetary Annihilation looked amazing! I'd love to see something along these lines, a bit like King Of The Monsters and Rampage too, giant monsters and robots tearing a whole city to pieces. Would be so satisfying! Sorry to hear of your poor health, I hope you recover soon. Stay strong!

The alarm clock at the beginning was too real for me D: all I could think when I heard it was "Oh no time to go to work" and I'm watching this on my day off >_>

Human Resources was probably not funded because of the sorry state Planetary Annihilation launched in. It is still unfinished, after they moved to Titans, which owners of PA would still need to pay full price for. Gamers saw that they were gathering funds for a new game before finishing the previous one, so naturally they were very sceptical. Uber has lost consumer trust.

With 500,000 new people knowing these exists, I wonder what would happen if any of them made a second attempt.

I was one of the backers of Shadow of the Eternals, and I almost cried the night the campaign ended because the world needed this game to revive the horror genre, but there was so much negativity surrounding the developers that more time was spent combating bad press and negative feelings and opinions surrounding Denis Dyack and other former Silicon Knights employees who wanted to work on that game and not enough on the game itself that not even David Hayter, The Ranting Robots, and Greg what's his name from Up At Noon could convince the non-believers to give the project the money they were asking for.

No wonder Kung Fu Superstar failed. Having your game associated with Molyneux (aka the King of False Promises) is like a death sentence.

Boogerman looked cool, it had Huge potential. OZOMBIE looked really Great. Really heart shattering it didn't get enough for it to be a reality.

The big reason of why Human Resources failed it's Kickstarter was the absolute lackluster of a game they released from their last funding campaign, Planetary Annihilation. It wasn't until (I believe if memory serves correct) a year and a half after the release of the full game did they finally get the game up to the standard they were promising originally. If I recall correctly, Human Resources was announced a year prior these changes, so people were still sour about Planetary Annihilation's end product.

I saw the trailer for Human Resources when it was new, and I am a backer of Planetary Annihilation. My thoughts were: "Yes really looks like a nice idea, but didn't I already give you money to make me a game? Can you please finish that first before starting a new project? So I did not give them money for it. And I am quite happy that the Kickstarter did not get through. By now I think I would be ok by backing Human Resources. But not when they wanted the money for it.

Just found your channel. Super cool stuff. However, I wanted to point something out about the #1 pick (even though I am aware that you didn't make this particular video, Larry). The reason that Human Resources didn't get funded was not because the concept didn't seem awesome. The problem was that Uber Entertainment has a massive reputation of releasing unfinished, unbalanced games that they did little to nothing to continue supporting. Monday Night Combat came out on consoles, and it received no love from Uber afterwards. Unbalanced annoyance, despite being fun. Their answer to that was to bring Super Monday Night Combat to PC. It was awesome at first, and it seemed like they had learned from their mistakes of not supporting...but that died shortly after as well because Planetary Annihilation was being worked on. When that game came out, it was responded to by the gaming community as "kind of unfinished and unbalanced," but there was expectation that Uber would try to support it, as they had promised. They weren't just going to leave us high and dry. They left us high and dry, but not without almost immediately afterwards announcing...you guessed it...Human Resources, their new game! When that didn't get funded, their answer was to release the expansion/standalone Planetary Annihilation: Titans...which was also mostly unfinished. Now they are working on Wayward Sky, a PlayStation VR game. Hopefully, after the layoffs due to the failure of Human Resources and the hubris they've shown for cranking out something without properly supporting it, they've figured it out NOW.

The intro was a tad bit too long, but otherwise a great video. Kung-Fu Superstar sounds like an awesome concept, but I highly doubt it would play well. Motion controls are honestly not that precise for the idea to work properly. Also, having Peter Molyneux talking about its potential is a warning in itself, lol. I've backed Shenmue 3, but not planning to back any future games on kickstarter or indiegogo. I just don't really trust for the games to come out as planned or at all. Even Shenmue 3 seems pretty risky to be honest, but what can I say, nostalgia

LOL ........ Sooooooooo if you are 28$ away 5 min before the deadline - then why the hell don't you just chip that in yourself - or get a friend or family member to do it for you... That seems a bit.......... weird to me...

I have a gut feeling a lot of these failed due to lack of advertising the Kickstarter campaign. I say that as all of these I never heard about until watching this video, than again, I'm aware of Kickstarter but have never funded anything on it.
