"Stan" is fantastic story telling but it is fiction. He wrote the song because in '99 after his first album he became very popular in America but then Dr Dre released his second album and it had a couple of features with Eminem and that made him more popular. So this guy went from struggling and hardships to a famous person. He became so popular that fans looked up where he was living and parked in front of his house, placed tents on his front yard. People were following him into the bathroom when he was in a restaurant or so. And all this happened before his second album came out. When the Marshall Mathers LP came out it changed everything. It changed the culture, it changed rap, it changed his life and of everybody surrounding him and it was important for me. So a lot of the songs in his second album are about the changes he was going through. For him there was no way back, he became a public good, everybody wanted it a piece of him. The Slim Shady LP his first studio album made him a star in America, The Marshall Mathers LP made him a worldwide phenomenon. This album sold 26 million copies and is regarded as one of the greatest albums ever made. The fact that this man was white, grew up in a black neighborhood and was so controversial because of his lyrics made him bigger than life. From '00 till '04 he was the biggest thing happening in the music industry. The song "Stan" became so popular that it even made it in the Oxford Dictionary to describe a person who got obsessed with their idol. Mark Chapman is a good example. He was so obsessed with Lennon that he killed him. In the eighties we would call him obsessed, delusional but nowadays we would call him a "Stan".

Also don’t forget that he was also bashed and ridiculed over some of the comments in this song as he was labeled a homophobe and was targeted by the gay community which led to him doing that duet with Elton John at the Music awards in 99-00 I believe. Which was also funny cause I believe he won a award for Stan earlier in the night then did the duet and shook and hugged Elton. And till this day it is still talked about as one of the greatest performances of Marshall’s Career.

With Em you really have to listen to the explicit version. A lot gets lost otherwise. "Stan" has become a common name for over zealous fans (think Stalker+Fan=Stan). One important thing to know is that Eminem has a way with words. The lines in his songs often have layered meanings. I usually recommend "Rap God", "Godzilla" or the MGK song and Em's rebuttle but since you are so new I really think you need to start with his earlier stuff. I do hope to see more reactions to Eminem though. I think when you really start listening to his stuff you really appreciate just how brilliant a lyricist he is.

And then, he became the best battle rapper in Detroit and got signed by Dr Dre, and went on to cement himself in greatness. There was obviously a lot of controversy along the way, most of which I believe to be overblown. Nevertheless, he continues to be an insanely talented, genuinely funny, and legitimately good person. Larryshair, it's CLEAR that you are starting to "get it". And honestly, it's refreshing to see and I know it's refreshing to you as well. Because now you are peeling back the layers and actually starting to see that Em is not the bad guy. Rap music isn't the bad guy. Music, race, words, appearances, opinions etc aren't bad. Any individual is capable of being bad, but he isn't one of them lol. It is awesome to see you start to get a BRAND NEW view and I'm so glad I'm able to watch you, as you see that his stories being told by whatever lyrics, are a real part of why he is different than most any other rapper. Sure, there are several that grew up as Stan's and may copy that style, which is GREAT btw, but the original is the one you just reacted to. He has been judged HIS ENTIRE LIFE, FOR THINGS HE HAD NO CONTROL OVER, broke, broken home, different schools every couple of months, etc etc etc. Which ironically is what happens to a large part of our population, due to the color of their skin, religion, etc etc. Hell, he has always been judged because he is a white guy doing rap. EXACTLY like when Tiger Woods took over the (predominantly white persons) golf world and became the GOAT. Anyways, for others, don't judge. Reserve judgement on anybody based on what that INDIVIDUAL does, not necessarily says, or looks like, or where they were born. I'm white. I was homeless for a year and let me tell you that I know a lot about being judged and mistreated simply because I was broke, and had no home. I bothered nobody. But I had the law running me away from stores as I was simply walking through them to try to warm up. And after makjng me leave, several times they would liiterally assaut me afterward because they KNEW nobody would listen to the homeless guy. PLEASE RESERVE JUDGEMENT everybody, please. I used to be able to walk through those stores, them being so kind, and it was warm. But once you don't drive up in a car, and you aren't buying, it all changes. So, I know something about it as well. Praise the Lord that He saved me. But as I went through that, I swore to myself that one day I would get that exact same job and I would show THEM and every other one who wore a badge, how TO TREAT PEOPLE, AND NOT JUDGE THEM for ANY REASON. And, a year later, I started working on that, building myself back up. A total of 6 yrs later, I landed that job after relentless work getting there, and I did make that my career goal, and absolutely followed through with it, each and every day.. I recently left that career, after giving ALLl I had to offer. I pleased with it, their judgement fueled my EVERYDAY drive to get a job, then cheap apartment, then 2nd and 3rd jobs at once, and their ignorance and hate drove me to get there. It reminds me a lot of Em's life story, just mine being on a MUCH smaller scale of course lol. I've spoken to countless groups, big and small, often in Churches, witnessing to all who wanted to hear about my story and how judging others happens, and how to realize that most of them are doing it. And it always gives the kids hope too, and that's always AMAZING and makes my whole struggle WORTH IT. Sorry for not taking my ADD meds (apparently LOL jk jk), but yeah, WE AS A PEOPLE CAN SPREAD THESE MESSAGES to others to help stop some of the division we currently face. I hope anybody who reads this WILL figure out how they can, on any level. Thank you LarrysHair, for having an open enough mind to allow in things that previously you assumed were bad. Because now you are TRULY seeing why so many people loved his songs and messages all this time. His real name is Marshall Mathers, his stage name is Eminem and Slim Shady is this alternate persona that he puts on in some of his songs. He uses this character to rap about explicit, violent and graphic topics, often causing major controversy, but keeps the Eminem and slim shady personas separate. Songs where he uses the slim shady character are often much more goofy and humorous on the surface yet at the same time are much darker in themes and lyrics

The depth of this song was one that actually gave myself a bit more of an open mind to his content. While I expected drugs, rape, murder and so on, I discovered depth beyond my expectations. While some songs have language, this one is one that you should not avoid. Give this content a shot. I'm so glad I did.

Bonnie (Bonnie and Clyde) , Em made a song in the previous album album (97 bonnie & Clyde) where Hailie (Eminem's daughter) is Bonnie and Em is Clyde (dark song about killing Kim). Ronnie is Em's uncle and best friend (at that time) because they were about the same age and he killed himself.

I know its been said hundreds of times before but you really should try to find the explicit versions of Eminems songs. The edited ones not only cut alot out, but you get the full meaning and emotional rollercoaster when it's not chopped up and censored. Great reaction though, its always great to watch someone dive into Eminem.

I love to see how much you have grown as a person. Your ability to appreciate the stories and see past the "vulgarity" of em's music. I love how you said this was a one off venture 😆 lol. Now you're a stan and proud of it. I'd love to see you react to this video where you knew so little (even just for a laugh). I appreciate seeing where you were and where you are now. Much love to you. Keep on growing man 😉 you're amazing.

I don't know if someone commented already, so I'm sorry if this is redundant. I'm guessing the name Bonnie is from '97 Bonnie and Clyde, a song from the Slim Shady LP. It came out in 1999. I'm glad you're getting into Eminem. My generation were teenagers when Eminem started, so I remember battles with our Boomer parents who thought he was a bad influence. I guess things come full circle, don't they? Subbed so I can watch your Eminem journey. 😬

LOVE your earnest reaction to this. Just wanted to jump in and add a little interesting background here. The chorus (tea's gone cold...) was pulled from an original separate song called "Thank You" by the artist Dido (the woman in the video). It doesn't have anything directly to do with the story of Stan. Apparently, Eminiem heard her song on the radio one day and thought "this sounds like a story about a fan," and it inspired this song. And so they collaborated to make this. Anyway, just wanted to share! Really enjoying your reactions!

This was the MV where the world learned Eminem/Slim Shady was an honest-to-god artist. Perhaps from not understanding the full context, years ago KPop fans started calling themselves "stans" when they really admire an artist or group. They do have a separate word for fans like Stan who stalk idols or otherwise cross the line, _sasaeng_ fans.

When my "real" dad found out I was listening to this song, I was beaten mercilessly to the point of bruised ribs and a broken wrist...And I am just so happy to see a dad out here, listening to the artist that changed my life, and hes getting goosebumps like me, and his eyes are widening at the same lines as mine....and there is someone out there who is feeling the same emotions I did when I first heard this song....your son is lucky. I am wine drunk and emotional, and your reaction has genuinely touched me. I know this will never be seen, but God, I am so happy dads like you exist. Thank you sir.

Slim Shady is his alternative-persona for when he went a bit crazy so he could blame it on something. "Stan" here is a fan, the song itself is from the perspective of a crazy fan who gets a bit overboard. Hope that helps! The song was a co-lab with DIDO, the woman in the song, great singer by herself.
