It was written by a student, not issued by a teacher. The assignment is unclear. For all we know the assignment was "write a paragraph long story and we'll read it to the class tomorrow" in which case the school board would not be aware of what material was on the paper and their reaction would be warranted. It being written by a student is a really important detail. The teacher might not have even read the paper yet.

My 6th grader had to take summer school for her getting a D in English. I found out only after her summer school English class was over that the text books that were used in class were written by the guest teacher and her assistant. Two poetry books were written by them and handed out to each student. Out of curiosity, I started looking at the "poetry". It was mainly about a girl being obsessed romantically with another girl, a girl who was severely depressed and all the different depression medications she was taking, and there was another poem about her being high on marijuana during school hours. How is this supposed to be helping my child learn English and make up for whatever she did not learn in her English class. Basics of grammer, writing and style? I was very upset that this type of stuff is passing as content for learning the fundaments of English. I feel like my child is being cheated out of a good education and a captive audience for whatever topic, or trend the teacher wants her students to be exposed to.

As a teacher in California I know the sad, sad answer: elementary schools would be too overwhelmed with students. There aren't enough elementary teachers. I've seen time and time again students either being assigned inappropriate things, or being given access to inappropriate things. Just last year there was a scandal about a writing assignment book called, 642 Things To Write About. Don't just take my word for it, look it up. Either the book or articles about it. It's a book with writing prompts. A mother shared some of the prompts from the book at a school board meeting, including: "•Choose how you will die. •Write a scene that begins: ‘It was the first time I killed a man.’ •Describe your favorite part of a man’s body using only verbs. •You have a dream that you’ve murdered someone. Who is it, how and why did the murder happen, and what happens afterward? •You are a serial killer. What TV shows are on your DVR list? Why? •Write a sex scene you wouldn’t show your mom. •You have just been caught in bed by a jealous spouse. How will you talk your way out of this? •Write a sermon for a beloved preacher who has been caught in a sex scandal. •Describe a time when you wanted to orgasm but couldn’t. •Ten euphemisms for sex. •Write a letter from the point of view of a drug addict. •Drink a beer. my daughter took an "f" in her high school english class rather than participate in reading shakespeare because she found it against her morals and ethics. the teacher refused to provide an alternate assignment, so my daughter took the failing grade. what are we shoving down our students' throats? good for the parents who are willing to stick up for their children.

Since when can't a school board engage in dialogue with the parents and citizens of the community that elected them? Is that not what the meetings are about is to engage and come to an understanding? That's because they are changing the rules to fit their own means and not be held accountable. Examples I have seen and they tried it at our own school board meeting is to simply adjourn the meeting before all matters on the their printed itinerary are addressed. How did we address this you ask......we conducted a recall of all school board members for failure to follow their oath of office, their dereliction of duty, violation of the open meetings act and failure to follow the law. What law you ask? A US Supreme Court ruling states clearly that a citizen has the right to speak in any tone or manner, ensuring not to use known curse words, to those who have been duly elected and are in a meeting to answer to those who elected them. In our case the only member not recalled was the one single voice of opposition to their forcing of offensive materials, materials that meet all aspects of child pornography, CRT ideologies, anything political or sexual that does not meet a reasonable need for academic use. If a student knows, due to classroom exchanges, a teachers political, sexual or religious views then that teacher has failed at their job.

Referring to sex acts and acting them out are very different. Pornography is not discussing sex; talking about sex is not pornographic all by itself. This was a writing assignment written by a classmate, not part of the curriculum. The daughter didn't mention her discomfort. We don't even know if the teacher saw this before it was recited. We don't even know what class this is for; in my theater classes we were often put into groups and asked to script and perform our own scripts. English and theater are two different places in every school where students are trusted to write works that are to be read by their peers. The type of language used and the subjects discussed in what was written are LIGHT for 15 year olds. It was when I was 15 (more than 15 years ago), and it was when my father was a teenager in the 70's. Should the teacher have read the script first? Maybe. Very maybe; we don't have any details. Was this written at the beginning of a single class period and acted out at the end and that was the point of the assignment? Probably wouldn't be time to go through each before they are shown. If there was time for that to happen, has anybody spoken out in that particular class about being uncomfortable with those subjects. My understanding of arts-based classes are that they are meant to be there to help students learn to express themselves; is telling a 15 year old student that they are not allowed to write about the topic of sex whatsoever conducive to teaching self expression? Probably not. Should the teacher have trusted the students to write things that will be read by other students? Maybe not anymore, and that's the one mistake I could see actually blaming the teacher for; harboring an environment where those topics can be discussed earnestly without taking into account that people don't always like open discussions. The way the world is these days, you'll get one side mad at you for bringing up God in a story and the other side mad at you for implying that a character grew up with two dads. However, I don't really get the point of a class about creativity if there are going to be bounds put on what is allowed to be expressed. Is the idea that we shouldn't teach stories or art at all? Just argumentative writing and math? Or maybe just never again have an assignment where a student writes a thing and another student reads it? No more students learning how to edit unless it is their own work? No getting kids getting to see their work appreciated except for its impeccable grammar? All you people yelling "GROOMING" need to re-read The Boy Who Cried Wolf; you are lessening the horrors of actual groomers (like priests and other pedophiles) just to make a political point against the educational system and LGBTQ+ folks. Yes, we get that the reason she was actually mad was that the character is explicitly a lesbian and talks about it. That's also not pornography nor grooming. When a teacher is caught sleeping with students (or hinting at it), then you can go ahead and tar and feather them. Getting mad because a highschool student came across the word "dick" or "lesbian" in class is stupid (and very likely phobic).

If you are dealing with other humans (especially ones that don't know or care about "professionalism" or "tact," like children), you are going to hear and see the things they say and do and it's stupid to pretend otherwise. You are free to not let your children be around other humans. The "content" wasn't part of the curriculum; it was written by another student. You want to avoid that? You gotta not have other students. You can do that.
