Starting something a little new - normally I'd leave my round up of JRPGs till the end of the year, but any game that didn't make the cut would be left out, despite being a quality game in my eyes. So from now on, I'll round them all up every 3 months.

These videos are one of the most enjoyable ones. I love watching them! I heard a lot about Arafell but never got the chance to try it yet. However, the JRPG that I want to get soon is Tales of Arise. With lots of contradiction regarding whether or not the characters and story were flat, I kept postponing it. But I think I want to try it for myself to make a decision of my own.

The characters in Arise are great, particularly in their interaction with one another. The story starts out conventional but solid before turning into wacky and badly paced. Pretty good overall though.

Oh since you asked about who played Grimoire Weiss is Nier replicant it was Liam O Brian. He's a phenomenal voice actor. He's played several voices in games I've seen you talk about. Like Sterkenbury in Atelier Rorona, Red X111 in the FF7 remake, can't remember if you've played Persona 3 but he played Akihiko in that game

Liam's a great VA who also does Illidan in WoW, but a small correction, Max Mittelman is who voices Red XIII in FF7R. Max is also known for being Ryuji from Persona 5.

I THOUGHT that was his voice - it's very distinctive and I was trying to place it. Now I know - he voiced one of the captains in Bleach and he was the voice of Archer in the DEEN adaptation of FSN. Now I can picture it.

Thank you for providing these overviews. The only ones out of these I have played are SMT III and Cosmic Star Heroine, but I think both of those are excellent and I'm curious to check out some of the games that you would consider to be on a similar level of quality. Due to your comments on backtracking in SMT III, I'm guessing you were referring to the Labyrinth of Amala and you were going for the True Demon Ending. That is the best way to play the game in my opinion, so I think you made the right choice going with that path. Besides, going deep into the Labyrinth of Amala is the only way to get the Super Pixie, which is my favorite demon in the game.
@TheKisekiNut
@TheKisekiNut 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, only wanted the True Demon Ending. I felt the story was at it's best when following that route, and was most representative of what SMT 3 was all about.
@ophidianmind333
@ophidianmind333 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheKisekiNut Not only is that the best-fitting ending for the game, it is also the canon one. SMT V is a sequel to SMT III and it follows the events in the True Demon Ending. There is even a DLC (which I think is so essential that it should have been included as part of the regular game) where you can fight all of the fiends from SMT III and then finally face-off against the Demi-Fiend, who is by far the hardest boss in the game. Fighting him on hard mode is the single most difficult boss fight that I've had in any RPG, don't be surprised if he one shots your entire level 99 party if you fight him on that difficulty setting.

a game i would recommend is lisa the painfull. its an excellent game with a really good story and a bunch of cool characters. the game is dark though, like really dark at times. it touches on depression, drug abuse, loneliness, desperation and hard choices that does impact your game and ending. even with all these dark things the game has a really good sense of humor, both daqrk and lighthearted. a game i feel like everyone should experience as its truly unique in the jrpg world, the game is pretty short, can span from 7-20 hours depending on how well you want to explore the world. AND its dirt cheap "A game about survival, sacrifice, and perverts" "Beneath the charming and funny exterior is a world full of disgust and moral destruction. Players will learn what kind of person they are by being FORCED to make choices. These choices permanently effect the game play."

I really like the game's world, themes and soundtrack. Gameplay isn't bad either. I should really try actually playing through more RPGs this year tbh, only played Legends Arceus so far really (well, I did actually start Tales of Hears R, but never really made it far). Guess I'm just a bit burned out after last year. Anyways. Love to see Nier Replicant and NEO TWEWY are higher up, two of my favourite RPGs from last year other than Ys 9. Shame you didn't like Replicant as much as Automata, I much prefer it personally, but that's just me. I thought sidequests were as bad in Automata tho. Shame you don't like NEO's OST as much as the original TWEWY's either, I thought it was way better for the most part, but to each their own. That said, the anime is another way to experience the first game's story (which is the route I took due to not liking the first game's gameplay), still pretty damn enjoyable.

That gets me excited to re try Replicant, I only played a few hours when it came out, but then I stopped because I wasn't in the right mindset and didn't want to tarnish my experience. I'm gonna put an ranking of all jrpg i have played so far since even if i finish like 15 games, a fair portion of them are jrpg or hybrid of them with another genre. I should however mention an special mention to suikoden 2 because i'm still playing this game right now. I'm like 25 hours into the game and without spoiling anything i'm at a certain location from the first game. So obviously he out of the loop but right now it's actually a good contender to be in my top 2 of this year and even more if the rest of the game don't fall under himself. So wait and see later. 6- Xenogears 5- Ys seven 4- Suikoden 1 3- Stella Glow 2- Xanadu Next 1- Utawarerumono Prelude to the fallen and the only one i've dislike was Xenogears tl;dr : the second disk has completely killed the potential of this game by cuting gameplay portion and even worse completely skip his own scenario without even bothering to make an decent presentation. Without mention a lot of stupid shits in the writting who ruin some part of the story while the first disk was almost an masterpiece. This game is one of the few where i think an remake is mandatory.

Beat Cold Steel 1 right at the very start of the year (after dropping Sky FC months ago thinking I wouldn't like the series) and CS2 followed soon after. Then went back to Sky trilogy and did those too. Watched a Crossbell summary and atm I'm already at CS3's chapter 3. Since Elden Ring and Stranger of Paradise already released, the only other game I'm looking forward to this year is Trails from Zero lol. And while waiting, I can work on my huge backlog.

I am sooo happy about the DQ11 coverage and comments. I want to like this game so much but I was put off by the music. I literally found the music to be nauseating. After work, taking care of kids, hanging with my wife and... more work I want to relax for a few hours to play a game at 10PM. The blaring orchestra music was enough to get me to quit. I only got about 5 hours in before I couldnt take it. I immediately played Octopath right after and that contrast made DQ11 look even worse. 2 years later I may revisit the game because I really want to like it.

Towards the beginning of the year, I beat Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2. They’re very excellent, if you’re a fan of Atlus, you should totally try them, especially if you liked Nocturne. They have more story depth, and no demon negotiation (the games were designed for newcomers) so the characters transform into demons instead. You spend time building your party up and learning new skills rather than completely overhauling someone’s build and swapping out demons/personas frequently. They’re about as challenging as nocturne as well, but can sometimes be a bit grindy unfortunately, if you haven’t learned the correct skills. Still, I love them, and they served as an entry to mainline-esque SMT for me. Right now, I am playing Xenogears, Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, and SMT V. Those are my three foci of JRPGs for the next few months. I’m about 17-25 hours into each of them, and they are honestly shaping up to be some of my favorite console-exclusive JRPGs.

For me Replicant was good but not on the same level as Automata. Was mostly turned off by the side quests being mostly pointless and tedious (which I’ve heard was done intentionally). Just finished Sophie yesterday and feel like it could easily be my game of the year. It carried over my favorite elements from Mysterious and Ryza and cranked it up to 11. A little nervous Gust has painted themselves into a corner with this one as I see no way to top it in terms of crafting and battle systems. For me they were perfect and I wasn’t too big on Ryza’s crafting.
@TheKisekiNut

Some of the monotonous aspects of Replicant HAD to be intentional. One of the quests required 10 of a very rare material - it basically forced you to run a dungeon several times to get it. Not for me. I stopped doing the quests at the 50% mark.
@MH_Zard
@MH_Zard 2 жыл бұрын
The side quests are intentionally made tedious and pointless in Replicant, and it's why I didn't do them. Only there for completionists. It was the game making a statement how lame they are. Granted some of the ones I did had some wholesome and heartbreaking stories. Other than that there is actually a questline that makes you go around in circles only to not be rewarded in the end because the client swindled you, which again, is the point. Don't bother with them unless you are interested.
