Line them up, and take them down one by one. Here's my JRPG backlog for 2023!

I really enjoyed the first Blue Reflection. The story and gameplay are indeed incredibly simple to the point of being dull, but it has a uniquely soothing atmosphere and one of my favourite recent JRPG soundtracks. Also everyone who’s been telling you to play the first AI Somnium Files is correct - the second is more of a mixed bag, but worth checking out if you really enjoy the first.

Last year, my JRPG backlog goal was to start and get caught up with FFXIV. Now that I've completed Endwalker, my goal for this year is to do a Ys Marathon in preparation for Ys X. I've beaten some of the Ys titles before, but this will give me the opportunity to play the series in chronological order, play some of the titles I've missed, and get a better sense of its continuity (even though the titles are mostly self-contained). So far, I've beaten Ys I, Ys II, Origins, and am currently halfway through Memories of Celceta.

Solid list! I've been blowing through the Diofield Chronicle for the last week, and while I can say it does get repetitive, I don't consider it nearly as bad as other games. It's not a 10/10 game, but I'm managing to have a 10/10 experience, and I'm on the last chapter.

As such I'm doing that for now and while I don't have any backlog, if any game catches my eye I'll probably be playing it out as well.

crosscode is such a gem of a game. the best game i have played in years, and thats saying much as im unemployed and plays videogames all day. the puzzles while there are alot of them there are only really a handful thats actually hard. most of them are pretty tame but can take a min or 2 to understand. crosscode is also one of the few games that does a "silent" protag right (even though shes not strictly mute) combat is very much like ys but with a talent tree progression instead of hidden to unlock new moves. it was a good amount of years since i played it so i cant remember the story all that well but i remember it being good but nothing outstanding like a trails game i will sing crosscode praises until the day i die

Yoo crosscode is mad goood, but it is puzzle heavy, when you play it look out for me, I'm in the game. It's a banger of a game you'll definitely like it amd you can make the puzzles easier with the puzzle slider I'm currently playing rorona again and I'll be honest the time limit isn't that bad, I kind of rely like it because it pushs you to kind of be on point and make you learn how to handle limited resources in a way. So far the time limit feels limited and you just gotta let your self know you won't be able to do everything in the allotted time limit. Rorona is fun no doubt

I will say honestly I loved the first game way more than the second game personnally 5:52, esppecially around the soundtradck and the story I discovered it last year picked it up because it was on sale and weirdly enough every list or recommendation from the PSN always recommended to me Blue Reflection so I caved in and tried it out was playing at the same time as i was discovering Elden Ring so whenever I needed a break I hopped in Blue Reflection or AI the somnum Files and they both were what I needed to unwind of getting stuck against a boss wall in Elden Ring, maybe a little too much Fan Service, (after playing the first game I'm pretty sure you know what to expect), but really fun and a surprised gem to me, my only regret is not playing it sooner

I am thinking about my personal backlog and I will probably limit it to some games I already started. I am currently playing both FE Engage and Harvestella. Both are very fun games with a lot options and great sidequests. And both games are very emotional in both story and sidequests. I highly recommend them. Especially Harvestella, where the sidequests range from very sad and emotional to downright hilarious with a certain character fighting... you guessed it: Heuschnupfen! I am not big into indie games and will not play Chained Echoes as it doesn't really appeal to me. My friend though bought the Limited Run version which will probably take years until he gets it. The other thing I will try and do this year is play more Trails. I have started Cold Steel 2 and am in chapter 1 with a few technical problems. Like my controler disconnecting and the sound being desynchronized. The music especially. I don't know if it's my PC, because it should run fairly smoothly on my system. I want to play more Ys too. I have finished 2 runs of Ys Origin with both Yunica and Hugo and am at the 3rd character now. His run will be my last and I am looking forward to playing as him. I have bought the LE for Rhapsody Marl Kingdom Chronicles and am now thinking of getting Reveries LE. I do have to buy it from the UK store though, because I don't have a credit card for the EU store. But at least DHL allows me to pay the Zollgbühren at home. I love my JRPGs.

Part of my year will be taken by quite a few Trails games. I had already played all 4 Cold Steel games, but then decided to go back and play every single Legend of Heroes game (even Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes 2, which I had to play with a real-time screen translator). I'm now to the point where the only (pre-Cold Steel) game I haven't actually played is Azure. So, I'll be playing that when it comes out, then I plan to replay the entire Cold Steel series. Part of the reason I'm doing that, is because I hate having to wait for more Trails games to release, and I figure that if I replay those games, taking a few months off between games, then Reverie will be released, and the wait for Kuro might not even be that long, by the time I'm done with Reverie.

Oh boy backlogs don't remind me.... Would suggest to flip Harvestella and DioField around maybe. Harvestella is pretty much a true and true JRPG for like 70% of it with a good story and good characters. Combat in it is very simple but it gives you a ton of classes to unlock as you go. This one is a hidden gem! :D DioField I only finished the demo of and from what I saw and heard from people who played the full game it's meh at best. Tactic goes out the door very quick (did notice that in the demo to) and the story and characters are ok at best. If Square would have made it a turn-based tactics game it made have worked but who knows :/

The time limits in the Arland trilogy are balls. I followed guides for Roronoa and Totori and barely made the cut off points most of the time (trying for 100% in a single playthrough) .It was so tight and some of it was pure luck. I fell short on my first play-through of Meruru, so about midway in I was just like whatever and finished it, and did a second playthrough where I 100%'ed it. I went back to Roronoa to play it all over again in the Plus version cause of the addition of a new epilogue, and it wasn't as bad because I had a lot of series know-how by that point. That said, I loved the characters and plotlines in the original trilogy, but I never want to go back and deal with those kind of time limits again. I've yet to try Lulua, but I'm looking forward to it. I have a monumental backlog!

Since I don't want to spoil anything about AI I'll only say it's one of the few games I don't really want to play again. Not because it's bad - quite the opposite in fact - but because I think I wouldn't be able to recreate the kind of impact it had on me on my first play through. And regarding Blue Reflection: I think it is a rather good game and I don't think the critique about the not so difficult combat does weigh in too much since it really isn't the focus of the whole thing. I can't really compare it to Second Light since I haven't play it but if you enjoyed it's cozyness I think you might like it as well.

I beat rorona and totori just the other month after bouncing off rorona back when it first came out on switch The time limit in rorona is actually really generous but I did have to accept that I wasn't going to have a perfectly optimised playthrough but once I did I had a great time and got the true and my second pick for a specfic character ending (do look up the requirements for the basic endings cos the game does not make it clear) Totori was a bit weird, it has a much more genorous timelimit but also gives you alot more stuff to do in it and in a much more open fashion getting the epilogue arc can be tricky looking foward to jumping on meruru soonish since it has some light town building elements which are always really cool

Game 1: The partner mechanic works better than it initially looks, and story is entertaining at least. Game 2: Without any doubt, this is Vanillaware's best game. While 13 Sentinels has the best story, this game easily has way better gameplay and replayability, plus the characters are likeable. Game 3: I've played demos of this and the first game. While they are different from the main series, using the franchise for Pokemon-like game makes them very fun. Game 7: The first game was beautiful but aimed for little kids, but the sequel makes the story and gameplay more interesting for older players. Game 11: Visual novels are the hardest games for me to buy, since their focus is on story that I could watch all online. But the story, look and characters of this franchise are the best this genre has had in a while, so you have to experience them for just a bit.

Good list you have. Some I’ve played, some I hope to play and some I don’t really have interest in. Blue Reflection has its flaws but personally I think they’re outweighed by it’s charms and it’s pretty short so not too much time lost if you don’t find it to your liking. Samurai Maiden I got a few laughs out of which is all I really hoped for but it unfortunately didn’t live up to its potential. It’s very repetitive, only one playable character and party members don’t even really participate except to use their abilities. I would strongly recommend you play Harvestella at some point. Like World of FF it has a much deeper narrative than what appears on the surface. Yes there’s farming but that is honestly such a small part of the game overall I wouldn’t even call it a farming sim like I thought it was based on trailers. Although I had a few minor gripes like the Cinderella mechanic and putting 90% of side quests in a single chapter it ended up being one of my favorite games of 2022.

In regards to your 10th game on the list: I enjoyed the 2nd game also VERY much and never played the first one. But there seems to be an anime-series out there which (as far as I read the comments) to tell the story of the first game. So if you don't enjoy the first game as much you probably get there at least a decent sumary of the story.

The anime is a spin off - it acts as a prelude to the second game. So you have the anime and the first game that both converge in Blue Reflection: Second Light. The anime itself though is an original story, though nothing special as an anime fan.

Ni no Kuni 2 is on my list but I admit I didn't enjoy the collect-a-thon for the first game so I have been putting it off. Astral Chain is one I've started but need to go back to.

for anyone that has played Ni No Kuni Revenant Kingdom, do you have to complete the first to understand the second? i played the first but never completed it and this was years ago

Astral Chain is a gem, despite it's rough spots. Can't remember any of them being technical though, such as loading or frame slowdown issues. Samurai Maiden is better than it's given credit as well, just has some aspects that are a big disappointment, specially for those of use that expected some sort of Senran Kagura spiritual succesor.

Same for me regarding Crosscode. It still sits on my shelf but I'm not a big fan of puzzles. AI: The Somnium Files, MH Stories and Chained Echoes are on my list as well. Plus Dragon Quest 11 S, Harvestella, Persona 5 Strikers, Triangle Strategy, FF 7 Crisis Core, Scarlet Nexus, Valkyrie Elysium... And I want to catch up to the Like a Dragon Series with several games to go. Oh boy...

Play Monster Hunter Stories 2 with Japanese voices. I usually play games dubbed, but using Japanese voices helped me take the story a little more seriously. Absolutely awesome battle system, don't skip this one.

Chained Echoes is amazing. Ni No Kuni II - I kinda liked but much prefer the first! I didn't like some of the systems in II. I like some but some of them been forced to do for story progression really annoyed me. Monster Hunter Stories 2 is great but I haven't bought it yet. There is a MASSIVE demo for it on Steam and I have too many games to play at the moment so I am just keeping the demo for now lol.

I found Harvestella and DioField to be complete opposites for me. DioField had a very bland and forgettable story but combat that was really engaging for me, and Harvestella had an incredible story and characters while the combat was mostly frustrating and stiff.

It sounds like a lot of people are echoing the thoughts I had, that Diofield is just bland while Harvestella takes on a sort of hidden gem mantle. I'll still give Diofield a try first though and if it's not for me, switch immediately to Harvestella.

Have fun with AI: The Somnium Files! It's a hell of a mystery game!

Relayer for me looks like a SRW game but with much better graphical style (i mean the mech fights). Eh... i wish the there were more SRW OG like that...

A tip, if you going to play Astral Chain play at the emulator, this game is too beautiful for the switch limitations

I went for emulator in the end, it looks awesome and glad I made that choice.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 is decent. A good intro to JRPG and enough depth so many experienced players can enjoy as well.

Blue Reflection, you said it yourself is not as good as the second game so be prepared for that. The OST on he other hand ! will give you eargasms especially against bosses.

That helps, I can't deny that a solid OST keeps me going at times.

Ni no Kuni II... I finished it, but I'm not sure why because boy do I despise that game, whoever told you that the story is good was lying. CrossCode on the other hand has a genuinely good and different story. It's also a lot bigger and deeper than it appears at first. Some dungeons and their puzzles get to be too long and too much, use a guide if it gets too annoying as it's worth progressing for the story, the free roam portions and everything else. The environmental design is great though I think in some ways the whole landscape is a puzzle. But you don't have to solve that. Also highly recommend the dlc as it adds a very satisfying and quite long epilogue and continuation of the main story.

Me watching the video: "Damn.... He didn't play that one yet? Looool" Also me: "yeah.... I didn't played it either... Nor that one... Nor that one... Damn still didn't played 90% of my backlog..... 😭😭😭"
