I learned something new! how about that. Laser welding... So which materials are weldable to which and how does thickness and stack order affect the outcome? can I weld an entire rainbow sandwich at once or just a 2 layer bread and butter? BTW, In the Van W/ James is a brilliant use of marketing funds. You guys are way out ahead of the pack and it's refreshing! Keep innovating.
@TrotecLaserCanada
@TrotecLaserCanada 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, thank you so much for all the kind words! We're glad we have such a talented presenter like James! As far as welding goes, this is specific for acrylic-on-acrylic. Because acrylic turns into a liquid when you burn it, the liquid acrylic from the top layer solidifies with bottom one to create the weld. It won't work on wood or plastic so much. You can use any thicknesses depending on the power of your machine. You can also use a similar kiss-cut welding technique on twill fabric, we show an example in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZ2ymqN-aqiceq8

I wish i had learned about laser welding only a week ago when i designed my 1st rgb\led acrylic light stand for displaying artwork engraved acrylic panels. It would have cut my time in the solvent welding process & simplified my assembly. For others who might read this...I want to add a point about CA glues. It leaves a permanent, unsightly white residue on clear acrylic, so i only use acrylic solvents during assembly. Thank you James & Trotec Canada! (Will there be a "Trotec USA" in the future? I'm in Spokane, WA😉😎)

Thabks for the kind words, yes some glue can leave a stain on clear acrylic so we suggest to glue on the edges where it wont be noticeable. We have a Trotec USA, they are a great team! :)

Nice. Have Speedy 400, 80 W. What settings should I use? Love these kind of projects they are not necessarily meant for commercial sale. Although this one definitely could. Please keep projects coming.

Thanks we appreciate that! Try using 100 power, 0.3 to 0.4 speed and 2500hz. Just make sure that your table is fully sealed (the parts that don't have acrylic on them) and don't forget to use air-assist. You may need to test little square out with different speeds, but it should be slower than regular acrylic cutting.

Hi Gary, yes that is a predicament. Ideally you can laser cut some kind of hole in the back to fit your hand if you need to replace an LED light.

@TrotecLaserCanada

No you shouldn't. I have done it, but it really sucks. It burns like crazy and created little balls of melted glass. The molten glass can fly up and touch the lens and foul it. - James

Hi, would the acrylic welding only work if you have a vacuum bed? We have a Speedy 300 but only have the standard bed and honeycomb bed.
@TrotecLaserCanada
@TrotecLaserCanada 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Claire, you don't need a vacuum table, a honeycomb or cutting bed is what you would use - just tape off any unused surface so the vacuum/suction works much stronger.

So I've been playing around with "welding" two pieces of acrylic (as shown in the video) and have had very good luck with the bonding at the edge, but I'm not getting a clean look on the face (I'm using Translucent black with a clear top piece). I'm guessing its the capillary action is making "streaks" between the layers. Is there anything I can do to resolve this? Im using a SP400 80w. Thanks!
@TrotecLaserCanada
@TrotecLaserCanada 5 жыл бұрын
Hi J, are you getting the streaks around the cut? Or in the middle of the acrylic? What acrylic are you using, is it Trotec's or someone else?
@JH-ht8vr
@JH-ht8vr 5 жыл бұрын
@@TrotecLaserCanadaThe streaking varied (I did several tests) but seeing it mostly around the cut. Almost looks like the seal between the pieces aren't tight enough. I'm using Chemcast Cast Cell Acrylic 1/8" on each piece. Maybe go down to 1/16" ?
@TrotecLaserCanada
@TrotecLaserCanada 5 жыл бұрын
@@JH-ht8vr 1/8" should be a good thickness for this, and cast acrylic is better quality than extruded. What lens are you currently using for the cut?
@JH-ht8vr
@JH-ht8vr 5 жыл бұрын
@@TrotecLaserCanada I'm using a 2", but also have a 1 1/2" if that would work better.

The box or the welding? Welding doesn't mater what shape you use as their 2 flat pieces. With the 3D object we would suggest to use a CAD software like Rhino3D

How does this glue compare to weldon 4? I find you can easily ruin a job with some glues.
@TrotecLaserCanada
@TrotecLaserCanada 5 жыл бұрын
Christopher Rismay we are not sure about that particular brand but yes many glues do leave smuge marks so you can try to cover it up with a sepparate piece or try methylene chloride which is clear (but can still leave clear streaks)
