Laser Cutting and Engraving an LED-Lit Acrylic & Plywood Sign

In this project overview we look at constructing an LED-lit sign by laser cutting plywood, and laser cutting and engraving acrylic. One of the versatile and inspiring aspects of an Epilog Laser machine is that it can be used to engrave the graphics that will be the focal point of your finished item, and it can also be used to cut out the parts and pieces that will be used to produce the rest of your project. Many projects can make use of the laser’s ability to produce crisp, clean, and custom graphics, some can leverage the laser machine as a fabrication tool, and others can make use of both capabilities.

That turned out nice! Would you also consider putting mirrored acrylic along the back instead of lining it with foil tape? I would imagine the tape is a much cheaper way to go though. Thanks for the inspiration!:)

Mirrored acrylic is definitely a possible alternative. The foil tape is nice because it diffuses the reflection a bit. It's not a perfectly mirrored image that gets reflected back, so we end up with fairly soft, evenly diffused light behind the engraved acrylic. It's possible that mirrored acrylic could reflect such a crisp image that you'd be able to see the individual points of LED lights in the reflection, which you may not want. Since the LED strips are on the side of the box, this may not actually be a concern, but it's something to keep in mind. Regardless, though, mirrored acrylic is a great material and would certainly be worth considering. Thanks for watching!

You can secure the LED-strip with some clear gorilla tape.

how does the acrylic panel work? Is it transparent with a black film on the back that you remove via laser? What's the name of this particular product? I can't understand what's the name of that kind of panel in the link that you left. Thanks for the answer

Hi Diego, the acrylic is a cast acrylic sheet with polyurethane black paint added to one side. The cast acrylic engraves with a frosted look giving the light that shines through a glowing look.

Are you using a certain type of paint or will any spray paint work?
