To coat acrylic you can try black latex paint. It paints on streak free. It's water based and after engraving if comes off with soap and water. Works good on glass also.

I really enjoy your videos! I would like to engrave some custom name tags that include some graphics. Ideally, I would like to use dual color acrylic or plastic that I could later attach a clip or magnet. I have found blue material that exposes white when engraved. But I am looking for white material the when engraved exposes either black, or preferably blue. Is such a product available? If so, what do you recommend? I am using LightBurn and a diode laser. Any help would be much appreciated. Dave E.

Which laser machine you using & which diode laser you recommend which brand watt thanks
@MellowpineLasers
@MellowpineLasers Жыл бұрын
The 5W machine is Atomstack X7, 10W is Ortur Laser master 3, and 20W is xTool D1 pro. If cutting and engraving acrylic is your primary requirement, then I would suggest to go for a CO2 laser as it can produce faster results and even engrave clear acrylic without any transfer medium. In case of Diode laser, I would suggest a 20W or higher diode laser (preferably from xTool) for faster results and cleaner cuts in thick acrylic.

Hi. What would be the best settings to use to cut clear Acrylic? I would also like to know in Lightburn where did you get the setting to cut the bike keyring out like that. It is really cool. I am new to lasering so are still learning all the different things. Thanks for the 7-day course on lasers I have registered for it and are looking forward to each lesson.
@MellowpineLasers
@MellowpineLasers Жыл бұрын
You cannot cut clear acrylic using a diode laser, you'll need a CO2 laser for that. Go to window menu on LightBurn and check if you have Modifiers enabled (if not enable it). Check the toolbar on left side and find Offset shapes, click on it and you'll get the window to make the offset, play around with it and you'll figure out how to do it. PS: It only works with vectors PPS: You can use trace image option to make vector from image PPPS: Ask me if you have more doubts

Hi, I haven't used the Sculpfun S9, but I believe it has a 5.5W laser output, so you can use the optimal parameters for any 5W laser module as a reference to start your jobs. You can refer to this material settings chart from xTool and use the settings corresponding to their 5W laser module to get started. www.xtool.com/pages/material-settings

I am sorry but I am new.. this might be a dumb question.. but for clear acrylic, you need to only paint where you are engraving? and once it is done, you clean the paint off? or leave it? do you engrave on the side with the paint, or the other side and have the painted side on the table? thanks
@MellowpineLasers
@MellowpineLasers Жыл бұрын
Yes, you only need to paint the surface that you are engraving, and once it is done, you can clean the paint off to get the frosty white engraving look. You can also leave the paint on of you prefer the painted look (depends on what you want your project to look like). You can engrave on either sides. But if you use a brush to apply the paint, I would suggest engraving on the other side and have the painted side on the table. That way, laser engraves on the back of the paint where the paint layer is uniform without any brush strokes. However, you have to set the laser focus on the painted surface as the laser will burn the paint to produce the engraving.

Hi there, can I please ask if it is possible to engrave and cut mirror acrylic on a M1 Xtool 10W laser? If so, could you please share with me how I could best do that? Thank you so much. Love all your videos!
@MellowpineLasers
@MellowpineLasers Жыл бұрын
No, diode lasers cannot cut mirror acrylic because once the reflective coating is removed, only clear acrylic remains, and diode lasers cannot cut clear acrylic. However, you can use your 10W laser to engrave the back of the mirror acrylic.

Could you use dry erase markers instead of paint for Engraving?
@MellowpineLasers
@MellowpineLasers Жыл бұрын
I personally have never tried that, and since most Erase markers contain polyvinyl butyral (PVB), I would not recommend using them. Processing PVB under a laser produces harmful fumes that can be dangerous if inhaled, and even damage your laser machine.

Do you put the pain side down?
@MellowpineLasers
@MellowpineLasers 11 ай бұрын
I put the paint side up because I managed to get an even coat of paint. If you cannot achieve a uniform coat of paint, then it is better to put the paint side down. But make sure that you set the laser focus at the painted surface and keep the workpiece elevated from the table to allow the smoke to escape easily.

I just did a sign where I painted sheet metal gray, focused on it and engraved a 4mm clear acrylic on it with the settings from the video (100% power and 9000mm/min speed). Alot of black marks on the side that engraced and even with alot of cleaning with alcohol it does not go away + bubbles in the engraving as well. Guess i need to do some speed tests to sort this out.

@MellowpineLasers

The first one is the one I got from the initial test pattern. 9000 mm/min at 100% is the speed I got after further testing to optimize speed. You should run a power test, a lot of factors can affect the speed and power setting you need to use.
