Question- A powerful laser, through a one way mirrored surface, mirrored at the "end" of it's path directly back towards the laser, would the effect still exist? It's something that I would imagine is incredibly difficult to test, since there's no placement within this to put any input, but curiosity gets the better of me. An example setup of this; Where; || is a one way mirror | is a standard mirror = is the light [ ] is the laser / diode / whatever [ ]=||==================|

No. "One way mirrors" are actually used for this in optical experiments, though usually they absorb rather than reflect the light coming towards the source.

So what is the correct answer to the puzzle at the end? Why is there a dramatic effect on the laser frequency and its intensity when the laser is reflected back?

is back reflection only a problem for gas lasers with a cavity?

no. diode laser also give different light

I've heard you can burn out a laser diode with back reflection.
