My biggest concern, honestly, was weather-related ....That always felt to me a weakness, and there's always plenty of "bad weather". Maybe they've come along further than I think

It's a process just like missiles were when they first came on the scene. Time, cost and improvements will see lasers take over as the dominant defensive weapon. Time will tell.

To me that seems to be the problem "a continuous stream of energy" under an attack we would be dealing with swarms of missiles or drones or whatever so that continuous stream would have to be really really short in terms of its effectiveness, I would expect that in order to be effective the laser would have to be destructive within a half a second in order to be able to deal with the amount of missiles involved in a swarm

Perhaps divide the targeting among X number of laser systems. Or multiply as needed vs a resistant target.

This is a candid, honest discussion of laser capabilities for naval defense. Except when used for small, open boats and slow-moving drones, useful laser value is understood to await future research and development. I find that this fact is rarely acknowledged by navy boosters. Your podcast could probably have also mentioned, but didn't, that virtually none of the US naval surface vessels can accommodate the power requirements of lasers. Our ships have neither the power nor physical space necessary for laser use. One understands that the Zumwalts and Gerald Ford class of carriers may be happy exceptions, but that's about all. Yes?

I understand the US Navy understands how critical to build a new super radar & missile & laszer system that can pick up mosquitoes because it's protecting the biggest and most powerful weapon we have😊 so we must make a great anti-aircraft and missiles of all type system

How do you think laser weapons stack up against traditional missile defense systems? Are they the future of naval defense? Comment below 👇

Lasers need clear weather to be 100% effective. Never mind the limited effective range in the best of conditions is only a few miles. The good news is laser light is fast..... very fast. The Navy already has systems in place that automatically track targets. Current lasers need a few seconds on target to destroy or disable. Hypersonic weapons will have a slight advantage since a 60KW laser needs time on target. A 100 plus KW laser would need less time.

Why should laser weapons be of interest to the Navy only? I think that they apply to all military forces.

I think they will...and they are already heading that way, the problem, currently, is power source. The Navy ships can generate that now

@@mikelittle5250 Laser weapons don't require much energy, as the time is only a few seconds per shot. Air defense lasers can be easily supplied by the grid or by a standard truck-mounted diesel generator as used for transformer station maintenance.

build a Laser on a Hiper sonic rocket or just a regular rocket I guess I think that would work a lot better to Hit nuclear weapons in orbit or space 🌌

They can make a drastic difference in the technology if they have the laser formula E=hf^2. As I am a nuclear physics PhD they can get more laser power if they cut the time on nuclear panel settings to 0.129 seconds from 0.202 seconds and a displacement of 25,373.1 miles.

Adaptive optics? I'll be dead before that is applied to weapons. It was thought of to receive signals from objects light years away. It sounds like a technology that is used against instruments that use optical detection that can be used against the weapon. Perhaps adaptive means agile. It better be agile.

After a 4 year stint in the Navy, I was discharged as an EW2. I used to operate the old WLR-1. I then went to college. In 1987 I earned an Associate in Science in Laser Electro Optics Technology. I had a successful career as a field engineer working in the medical field. In 1986, when I was able to do all the math calculations, I dreamed of working with high powered lasers. Obviously, that didn't happen. I think I got my degree 37 years too soon.

If lasers can shoot down anything in the sky they are variable light wavelengths not constant as Einstein's postulated work from his theory on special relativity applies. E=mv^3.26

@@ronerickson8083 The wavelength is constant in a laser. That's what makes it a laser. What can affect the energy beam is the optics.
