@morganmiller63735 жыл бұрын
Sarah Freeman I would agree except I go for spf foundations to get a boost of protection and to make up for any sunscreen that I’m rubbing off as I apply my foundation. I agree that it’s not enough on it’s own but spf foundation is actually very useful!! 🙂 I recommend all my clients use spf foundation on top of an actual sunscreen

Had to laugh when you showed the "invisible zinc". Only knowing the old fashioned zinc from my childhood, I thought "excellent". I grabbed it as I was heading out the door and lathered it on my face like I would my precious sunscreen. Truth in advertising is optional evidently! Not only was it NOT invisible, it remained NOT invisible for days afterwards as I tried to scrub it off my skin without resorting to the Solvo! I looked like Casper the friendly ghost! Now I know it's the size of the particles that make the zinc "relatively invisible"! Thanks for the informative clip. I still use the Invisible Zinc, just far more sparingly than my first effort! Oh...and no sunburn that day. My son did take a pic of me, which he graciously shared through social media..thankfully I am unrecognisable!

Also, I've read a study disproving that zinc is indeed purely a chemical blocker, it stated that only a very small part of the rays were blocked physically by zinc, while the other parts were chemically absorbed. But with that in mind, zinc is naturally occurring. Maybe this is the reason why zinc sunscreens always still advise on the directions to apply 20m before sun exposure, yet somehow still market themselves as a purely physical sunscreen. Again, feel free to correct me if this is wrong @dr Davin lim

i've stopped using chemical sunscreens ever since i've learned in my trip to cancun that chemical sunscreens damage the coral reefs (generally unsafe for the environment when washed out), and my skin lately becoming more sensitive. and since sunscreen has to be applied thickly to be effective, i've chosen to use cheaper mineral ones so i can afford to slather them on. i used to use products from suntegrity and supergoop, but even with just a thin layer on, they all ball up on me. and they're quite pricey. the ones that have worked so far for me that also work quite well under powder makeup are the ones from andalou naturals. rarely ball up on me, and work quite well under powder foundation

Very interesting about the difference (or lack thereof) between spf 30 and 50. Good to know, since I‘ve been reaching for spf50 for the body increasingly and it’s often 1/4 to 1/3 more expensive than the spf 30 of the same brand. Go figure! Love what you’re doing! Marisol Mena I live in Germany, we have several rather inexpensive drugstore brands that offer fragrance free 'super sensitive' options. For the face though, I order the Nivea super water gel spf50 from Japan via Amazon. I have oil skin and that's the only one I found that actually feels good and doesn't bother me when it's hot. And it's reasonably priced at about 10-12 €/80ml, so I'm not tempted to be skimpy with it. I apply on my face/neck/chest/back of hands in the morning and then whenever I go outside. On my arms and legs only if I'm outside for more than 10 min. I know, the official recommendation is to be even stricter with it, but I mean, come on! We have evolved to deal with a little bit of sun exposure and I'm sure this is plenty enough to prevent skin cancer in Northern Europe. Luckily I've never much enjoyed sunbathing anyway, so I hadn't accumulated any visible sundamage when I started my current regime. If you're interested in product recommendations for the U.S., Dr. Dray has plenty of reviews of products in all price classes. The brand Altruist from the UK has also recently been recommended. They actually sell 1l bottles for fantastic prices and it's also fragrance free and with better filters than the US brands. Perfect if you have a family to take care of and go through that stuff like nobody's business ☺

Hi guys I just bought the colorscience spf 50 face shield. It is tinted 100% mineral (physical) sunscreen and it comes in 3 colours on their website the 1. original 2. glow and 3. bronze. I bought the bronze and its working really well for me. Barely any cast on my skin and I don`t wear any makeup on top of it. I would definitely recommend this one for darker skin tones!!. I apply mine with a dry beauty blender (2 layers- allow the 1st layer to dry a bit then apply the 2nd one. I apply 2 layers as in order to get the full effect of spf you are meant to be applying sun screen quite liberally) so that it soaks in without a cast. I would definitely recommend if its within your budget (£24.50 in the UK). For reference I am around NW45 foundation shade in MAC and estee lauder double wear I wear Sandalwood for the foundation shade. I think I am a Fitzpatrick 4/5. I have sensitive dry skin and have experienced no irritation whatsoever with the sun-screen. I have just bought the colorscience powder version as well so I can use this one to re-apply during the day.

I love how you simplify things without too much jargon! This really helped. The reason why I'm looking at this is because 3 weeks ago I forgot to reapply after a swim. I thought it maybe because I was using Nivea SPF 20 cream with Nivea SPF 50 spray on top.. on my legs, but it was obviously because it had washed off, especially noticing the bald patches of white against my burnt and blistered legs, which are still peeling. I used La Roche Posey anti-brilliance anthelios SPF 50 on my face and decolage, which luckily was ok, because this is my most sensitive area on my body to go red first! Do you have any recommendations for skin peeling lotions and creams, as an after care? I tried a few different ones. Also, does air-con and wearing leggings or jeans on top stop or slow the healing process? I felt my skin being calmer when my legs were exposed in the night to natural heat/air and fans, (with the windows open).

Hi David, love your videos. But would like to hear further detail on subjects like this. You seem to be very knowledgeable, are you missing some important details on purpose? Why for example have melanoma rates tripled with introduction of sunscreens and "sunsmart" campaigns everywhere in the world? Other than the whole nano thing... Physical sunscreens are strongly photo-catalytic and have shown to continue to be genotoxic even after the UV light has been removed. Why for example when compounds like oxybenzone become restricted in Europe above quantities of 0.5% due to photocarcinogenity (and obviously now banned in Hawaii) do we allow products like toddler sunscreens to have 8% oxybenzone? Would love to hear your thoughts on some of these and any other knowledge you'd be able to share. Thanks for your great videos

Reapplication is an issue if you are wearing make-up over your sunscreen. What do you suggest? (Love your videos).

Obvious not qualified but I've seen some powder sunscreen (some even with tint) that comes in a tube with a brush so you could always powder some on on top of your makeup to make add protection and touch up at the same time!! :-) I don't think they are available worldwide though because they haven't been approved by certain governments yet! I know they have them in the US though!

debra thompson And IT Cosmetics makes a foundation with physical SPF 50 and a pressed powder with SPF 50 than is easy to carry in your purse for a touch up. With the compact sponge you can get good coverage for reapplication.

Great video yet again. I tried the la roche posey one because you liked it. I've tried it twice now. It's not greasy and awful like a lot of others, but I just found that it was too chemically for me. It burns your eye lids and even parts of my skin, and it just has this awful chemical feel, like I've cleaned the bathroom with too much bleach and it's all in my oesophagus and this doesn't feel right - It's that kind of feeling. So yeah, I'm going to pass I think, but others might like it a lot. The only one i've found to be really beautiful is QV Moisturising Day Cream SPF30 (love QV) and Paula's Choice RESIST Super Light Wrinkle Defence. But yeah it's hard getting one that isn't awful isn't it.

I've used the La Roche and found it very difficult to rub in. I'd love to try laser but I've heard with brown skin it could make it worse and I've got lots of melasma, has anyone with brown skin tried laser?

Do you see any issues with applying a chemical sunscreen, letting it sit on the skin, and then applying a physical sunscreen on top? Would there be a reduction in efficacy with combining or layering any particular ingredients from a physical and a chemical sunscreen? Thank you for this Dr. Lim. Information about sunscreens is always extremely helpful.

In what regards the spf adding layers of protection doesn't add any benefit; choose one sunscreen and apply it correctly. Regarding uva protection I don't know, but I would risk saying it's the same.

Apparently, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide degrade avobenzone (I think titanium dioxide makes avobenzone more unstable than zinc does, but still). If you have a chemical sunscreen without avobenzone, then layer away 🙂
@tonyvirdanen16 жыл бұрын
Just get your sunscreen from Europe , UK, Asia or Australia. US is way behind in sunscreen. It only has one UVA filter , avobenzone, which is unstable and degraded in sunlight, compared to 4-5 UVA in the rest of the world

What about for people with acne prone skin. Which is better ? I use a nuetrogena healthy defense SPF 50 (chemical) they have a physical but the marketing box doesn't say "non comdegenic" so will it clog my pores ? I usually sweat with my sunscreen while at the gym at night then shower.

Clayton Paz Physical sunscreens are usually non-comedenogenic and gentle on skin. My favorite is EltaMD UV Sport SPF 50, it's water resistant and lasts up to 80 minutes before needing reapplying. It's fragrance -free, oil-free, paraben-free, and non-comedogenic! Hope that helps, you can always find lower priced one's like Eucerin SPF 30 just have to re apply more often. ?

Dear Dr. Davin Lim, how can I tell which sunscreen offers a a very high UVA protection or is it not possible to tell from looking at the list of ingredients?
@SilveryArsenic6 жыл бұрын
Ileana Cucu in some countries / brands you can see “PA++++” on the bottle. It ranges from PA+ to PA++++ (maximum 4 and the more + the higher the coverage against UVA in theory)
@keurebang85886 жыл бұрын
Gathering from what Dr Lim has said, physical blockers like Zinc Oxide gives UVA protection, and chemical blockers are Avobenzone and Anthelios XL - I guess they should be near the top of the ingredients list to give the best UVA protection.

I use that and I use sunscreen under it. The best sunscreen I ever found was by La Mer but it’s so incredibly expensive. I’m currently using La Roche Posay which can piss me off sometimes but all in all goes on well under IT cosmetics as long as my face is exfoliated and plumped beforehand. I’ll use skinceuticals vitamin C serum and skinceuticals B5 hydrator before sunscreen but I let them both really sink into my skin before applying the sunscreen. So I’d say I give my vitamin C 30 mins to absorb, give the B5 another 15 mins to absorb and then sunscreen let sit another 15 mins then go in with the foundation. This seems to work out well.

There are so many hybrid sunscreens with both chemical and mineral ingredients ( like Elta MD) and I find they go on the face smoother and nicer if you wear makeup, I have not found a single all mineral Sunscreen that I can wear with makeup, if anyone has any suggestions? I spent last summer sampling 20 or more. Today my faves are Elta MD Zinc Oxide 9.0% Octinoxate 7.5%, Algenist Sublime Defense, Octinoxate 7.5%, Titanium Dioxide 2%, Zinc Oxide 17.1% and SkinMedica Essential Defense Octinoxate 7.5%, Zinc Oxide 12%. They are indeed pricier but worth it to me as you say if I'm actually going to wear every single day. Asian Sunscreen, please do a video to explain the ++++?

Hello, you must watch Dr. Dray, dermatoligist in Texas. She has so much good information about sunscreens.

Asian sunscreens are so superior. At least compared to sunscreens filters approved in the USA. Our FDA is 30 years behind in approving sunscreen filters. I like the Australian Gold tinted mineral sunscreen SPF 50. It looks great on the skin and is economical.Yes, I know it is not made in Australia.
@carolchadwick35806 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree... I love Hada Labo and Sheisido SPF. I live in Caifornia. Do they sell Austrialian Gold in the CA and does it wear well under foundation?
@palladio74766 жыл бұрын
Carol Chadwick. Hado Labo and Skin Aqua Moisture Milk are among my favorites. The Australian Gold in available in US drugstores and is about $13.00 for 3 oz. It leaves a soft matte finish that looks great under makeup or as a base for a powder foundation. It comes in a tinted or a non-tinted version. Cheers!

@raraavis77826 жыл бұрын
Gaf Hadly There are sunscreen powders. Not ideal, you can’t rely on them to provide the same kind of protection as regular, freshly applied sunscreen, but I guess, it’s better than nothing. And wear a hat, when you go outside 😎 Also, I personally love the Nivea water gel spf 50 from Japan. It’s a clear, oil free gel...I don’t wear makeup often, but I think this one could probably be applied over make up without looking messy.
