4:45 physical (aka mineral sunscreen) ; zinc and/or titanium dioxide ; can have white cast 6:16 chemical sunscreen : avobenzone, etc ; need to wait 20 mins before heading out ; tend to not leave white cast ; but many people find more irritating 8:12 combination sunscreen

My co-workers make fun of me because I always reapply sunscreen before going outside when it's sunny and say I smell like sunscreen. I try to explain the benefits of sunscreen as much as I can in these scenarios and managed to get one of my coworkers to at least start applying sunscreen to his face in the morning. Don't care about the teasing since I'm protecting my skin!

Thanks. I know it's annoying to have to repeat yourself but in our defence it takes time to work our way through your videos. Often I've asked a question only to later find it answered elsewhere. Such is life. We're all busy. Regardless, I ALWAYS appreciate it when you keep your content science based. I love that I can trust you to accurately interpret data and present it in a no-nonsense way. This is a quality in short supply on KZbin. Thank you. Reality is always preferred. I love, love, love that you understand and reflect true science. Thank you. You're a gem.

Dr. Dray, I can’t thank you enough for the evidence-based and honest information on your channel. I have learned so much about skincare, and I feel that I really don’t have to be afraid of “chemicals” in products and I don’t have to spend a fortune to have a great skincare routine. My life would genuinely not be the same without you. Your strength and heart for others are an inspiration. Since you have been so helpful to me, I wanted to let you know I’m concerned about you. I’m hoping that you are seeking any help you might need. Anyway, thanks again for giving so much of yourself for other people.

For the first time in my life, I'm taking sun protection seriously. Better late than never. Who knows how many lives you save making these videos. Previous to viewing your content, I believed chemical sunscreens were endocrine disrupting nonsense and I couldn't be bothered. With my rosacea, I found them very irritating anyway. Deanna, I cannot have chemical sunscreens on my face because of burning. Since finding mineral sunscreens, things have been fine. There are some that are more pricy then others. Some are good under makeup and some are not. My favorites are Bare Minerals Mineral Sunscreen and one from Australian Gold that is priced very reasonable. www.amazon.com/Australian-Gold-Botanical-Sunscreen-Mineral/dp/B01MECR54A?th=1. Both of these are excellent under makeup. Sephora also sells a brand called Super Goop that is suppose to be good also. Good luck.

The dreaded question: what are recommended treatments in the unfortunate event of a sunburn? From a "mild" pink to full on blisters there have been times when this body has experienced the pain. Yes, I forgot sunscreen on the tops of my feet. My daughter was severely burned while visiting the Galapagos (she rolled up her jeans during a "wet landing" ). I missed a small section of my back when applying sunscreen. The curse of red hair/pink-blue skin means one burns very, very fast.

I'm so glad I discovered you! Sometime at the end of college (when I'd be out in the sun a lot walking around campus), I started getting rashes on my arms, hands, and chest from sun exposure, so I've been wearing sunscreen daily ever since which significantly helps prevent that. But I had no idea there were different kinds of sunscreens based on their ingredients and the essential need for reapplying, waiting 20 minutes after application, and replacing them after a couple of years. I thought the Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion w/Sunscreen I use daily was good enough. But I see from the ingredients that it's a chemical sunscreen, so I'm going to look into other options. I've learned quite a bit from your videos, especially this one that puts all the info together, and I thank you! Also, I try to stay out of the sun as much as possible, but I've been criticized for it, especially recently when a blood test showed I'm vitamin D deficient. I was prescribed a weekly vitamin D2 50,000 pill and have been told by others I need to sit outside for 20 minutes a day, which I don't want to do. I'm glad to learn from you that there is no evidence sun exposure is an efficient way of getting enough vitamin D. So again, thank you for such useful information! Finally, I really appreciate you reinforcing the idea that even sunscreen isn't enough and covering up should be an added method of protection. I had no idea there was clothing specifically for sun protection. The items you linked are a bit above my budget, but I may have to make an exception since they're an investment in my health. Oh! And the recipes you share! I'm definitely trying some of those. I've gone back to start watching your videos from the beginning, and you've inspired me! Thank you again, Dr. Dray!

I'm LOVING the EltaMD UV Shield! It definitely has a bit of a white cast, but it's manageable and I highly recommend it to any darker girls here in the comments section! Another sunscreen I absolutely love for an active day is the Jack Black Sun Guard SPF 45! It's marketed as a men's brand, but the sunscreen is amazing, and the whitecast is minimal! It is loaded with silicones though, and with daily use it ended up breaking me out, but it's great to wear during my weekend hikes!

This was amazing! What a great idea for a video. All of the tidbits of info about sunscreen that I have learned by watching your daily videos are presented here in a concise and clear manner. Thanks for doing this for us - it is a great source that should get a lot of attention with the onset of summer. Yes - I think that a video about your favorite sunscreens would also be a great idea. One thing that frustrates me is the "pilling" that I sometimes get. I do not know whether it is a formulation issue of the brand, a bad batch, or the product reacting with something that I previously applied to my skin. I do wait between applications but it still happens - currently with the "Cerave Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30." I still use it and deal with the "pilling" because I hate to throw things away. Have a great holiday weekend!

Great video. Another important fact is avobenzone in its original form is not photostable so it is degraded UV light. So is homosalate. Mineral sunscreen is photostable. In part 2, could you please also include the adequate amount of sunscreen we should apply to our face? Most people don't apply enough, so it is a very important piece of information. I really like the Garnier SPF 15 Clearly Brighter moisturizer. It's so lightweight and even though it has a low SPF I think the ratio of avobenzone 3% and octocrylene 10% make it pretty photostable and it's so lightweight I can apply a ton of it and it's not greasy. I also appreciate the vitamin c, and LHA in it.

Hi Dr Dray. I just discovered goddess garden organics sunscreens at Walgreens. They do have lavender oil in them but don't irritate my skin which is pretty sensitive. They contain aloe, shea butter, coconut oil and some other oils and is a bit thick but is certified organic and non gmo and cruelty free. It smells great and is a mineral sunscreen as well. Its also very inexpensive. Great for people who want cruelty free and organic. Comes in spf 30 and spf 50. Thanks.

Hi Dr Dray, I really love the way you explain things! I got irritated by mineral sunscreen... Every time I used mineral sunscreen, afrer a few hours, my skin started to feel tight and weird, especially the areas around my mouth... Then, those tight spots started to peel the next day and became red... I don't think it is normal... Anyone faced the same? How can I still use mineral sunscreen without this irritation issues... Thank you!

Since the Neutrogena sunscreen has Helioplex, is it stable enough to layer zinc oxide and Octinoxate over or under it without destabilizing the Helioplex and decreasing its UVA protection? I can’t find any research on this.

I grew up in the 60's when the only sunscreen that was available was spf 4 or 6. My mom, who was very pale (as am I) used diaper rash ointment (the water based formula 40%) to add to makeup, sunscreen etc. From the era when we all had white noses from the zinc oxide, is this viable? I still add a little zinc oxide into my moisturizer (even though it may have spf in it) everyday. Crazy? Thanks Take care, love your videos Vicki

I have been a bit on the desperate side having not liked all the garbage in the sc & dimethicone that 40% diaper rash zinc ox cream seems like not a bad idea mixed with some carrier such as squalane. I've literally read dozens of ingredients & none of them would be my perfect mix. Some even have alot of oil & could lead to break outs. I've not used SC daily for a real long time. I am very fair but seems to reflect the sun myself so I rarely burn & my legs are still lily white despite being out & about. At 60 I know I should try a bit harder but to me I'd rather just use zinc oxide on a natural safe base than mixing it w all the chemicals. Came here to Dr Dray as she takes the time & cares about our skin!

I have acneic, sensitive skin which doesn't like creamy moisturisers and I stuggle to find the balance between cleansing with the right product to take my sunscreen off and not over-cleansing.. Your videos are so informative and helpful! I gotta get my hands on some spf... which moisturizers with broad spf do you recommend? I'm acne-prone, combination, and sensitive so I'm kind of iffy on layering a moisturizer and then a sunscreen. I'm afraid it'll be too greasy or moisturizing. Or is there actually no difference between layering the two and an spf moisturizer? I'm still catching up on your videos so idk if you already covered these

I’ve tried the Cerave “invisible” physical sunscreen products (SPF30 and 50) and wasn’t too happy with them. Although I didn’t feel they irritated my skin and didn’t caused rosacea flare ups.... I found them too be too moisturizing. They made my normal to oily skin rather greasy, as the day progressed and I had to do a lot of blotting, which made my tinted sunscreen and light coating of powder foundation on top, look “not so cute.” And the “invisible “ claim is a joke. Those definitely left a slight white cast, which my makeup only slightly toned down. It’s a shame, because i love a lot of Cerave products!

Do you personally feel that EltaMD UV Clear and some of their other combination sunscreens match up to LRP Anthelios XL (the european stuff, not USA)? I did an experiment with UV detection beads. I used EltaMD UV Clear, LRP Anthelios XL Ultra Light Fluid, and Blue Lizard Face. I used 1/8 teaspoon of sunscreen applied over a ziplock bag for all three sunscreens. Inside, I put the same number of beads for each individual bag. Then, I put it out in the sun for 10 minutes right next to each other. I also had a control to compare the colors to one with NO sunscreen at all. All but the Anthelios the beads turned color when exposed to UV light. The Anthelios remained white! That proves to me that the Anthelios is far superior. But the problem is that the LRP doesn't suit my skin as well as the EltaMD products. I guess I want the best of both worlds, nice texture, non-irritating, AND superior sun protection. Any advice? Thanks!

Hello Dr. Dray! Happy Friday. I would love to see a video re: your favorite (and not-so-favorite) sunscreens. My personal favorite is the Josie Maran SPF, followed by Mychelle and Andalou Naturals. Amazing video, one of the best SPF videos I've seen on youtube (and I've seen a lot). I really appreciate your effort to educate us! I have a few questions I'd love your opinions on. M favourite sunscreen is Drunk Elephant's sunscreen, it has 20% zinc oxide. (they also have a tinted version) 1) Does that mean I don't have to apply as much sunscreen as other sunscreens or do I still need to apply the same amount 2) can 20% zinc oxide be irritating or is it safe in your opinion? (read some mixed opinions on this) 3) What if I use the spray sunscreen on my hands then distribute it to my face, does that ensure even coverage or is a cream just more reliable?

Dear Dr. Dray, I have watched almost all your videos about sunscreen and I would really love to try out some of the sunscreens you have mentioned. I was wondering which sunscreen you would recommend to someone who wants to use only one sunscreen product? You have also mentioned the fact how important uva protection is and that there are some ingredients that stabilize the filters in the sunscreen. It would be really helpful if you could tell me which sunscreen is the best when it comes to these attributes and to the fact that I would like to use only one product, since I am quite overwhelmed by the variety of sunscreens. Thank you very much!
