I had lasik done 3 or 4 years ago and before I had it done I’d heard how the recovery was easy and you could see like the next day. Not true!!! The first month for me was awful, I was growing some extra cells along my flap in one eye, very painful, they stuck a contact bandage on it and it was ok after a couple weeks but scary. The halos at night took a full year to go away and the dryness as well. I was uncomfortable driving at night and avoided it whenever possible. If you asked me that first year, I don’t know if I would have recommended it, but now a few years later I definitely don’t regret it and I’m glad I had it done. Waking up every morning and being able to see from the second you open your eyes is an amazing feeling.

The main difference between PRK and Lasik is the process in which the cornea is dealt with - both ultimately achieving the same results. With Lasik, the first machine you mentioned uses suction and a laser to create a flap on the epithelial layer of the cornea (they used to use a blade for this before the laser was created). Usually this flap looks kind of like a C - it is then peeled back by the surgeon using a small tool (picture a grape and it’s skin being peeled back). They then will use the other laser ( the green dot you mentioned) to treat the exposed area beneath the flap for however many seconds you need to correct your prescription. The flap is smoothed back over the eye and the procedure is done . Now with PRK, the first laser isn’t needed. This option is usually used for people with thinner corneas. The surgeon will instead place a small circular metal ring(called a well) on the surface of the eye and fill the well with an alcohol based solution to help loosen the top layer of corneal cells. The surgeon then will remove the well and using other tools kind of “push” or move the cells aside, exposing the part of the eye to be corrected with the 2nd laser. After the 2nd laser, the surgeon will then move the cells back over the eye and place a bandage lens over the eye (think a contact lens without any prescription). This helps to promote the healing of the cornea and is usually removed after a week. Combined with the anti inflammatory and antibiotic drops and artificial tears the healing for PRK can take several months longer since you are waiting for those cells to regenerate and bind together again. Stability of vision improves along with the healing in both cases. These different steps and procedural practices of course can alter and change on a case by case basis so always ask your surgeon or his technicians if you have any questions. Everyone’s eyes are different so your experience may be different as well. In addition - Punctal plugs are pretty common practice after PRK and a lot of Lasik procedures as well. Many times it is not an additional cost and is included in the total amount that is charged of the patient - or if they are needed outside of a Lasik treatment, is covered by most insurances. Plugs come in different varieties - either designed to dissolve or fall out - longest are made to last about 6 months.

I work for an eye doctor and I say if you can get lasik do it. Do not sleep in your contacts. Like DO NOT SLEEP IN THEM. I wear only colored non script ones and slept in them for a nap just once and it slipped to the back of my eye. Panic immediately set in lucky I blunk/blinked...I kept blinking and because colored contacts are larger than regular ones I could get mine out without having to see my doctor (how embarrassing). But the horror stories of my patients getting them out is not fun. Plus its itchy. Don't do it.

Thank you SO SO much for this video! I did a LASIK consultation and was not recommended because of the size of my cornea cells, but I'm researching PRK right now and the chances of me having 20/20 vision might still be a possibility. I'm so thankful for this video

Hi YB~ loved your video and I would also recommend those considering lasik to go and get a consultation at least. My procedure was PRK and honestly i felt no pain but it was a longer process for my eyes to heal. The doctor does manually take off your corneal, but like you said because of the numbing it just feels like light pressure. After the procedure it took about a week for my eyes to start clearing up. Overall being able to see 20/20 was a process of 3/4 months. And in the end my vision is now 15/20. And i had mine done almost 2 years ago.

Giant tip for anybody getting Lasik. I got it done and they have you take pain medication plus additional eye numbing stuff before surgery. only takes a few minutes to do lasik. After they give you medication for pain to take after a short period of time. DO NOT WAIT TOO LONG TO TAKE IT. I waited till I got home and was in excruciating, collapse on the floor crying/screaming pain until the meds kicked in.

Some of the things YB didn't experience/left out for people to note There are more than 2 kinds of vision correction procedure available, do read up on them to understand them on at least a surface level. Ultimately your decision should be made after a consultation with the doctors to see which one is best suited for your eyes. Each procedure has their pros and cons of course, go in with a open mind. In my country, they usually waive off the check up fees if you book the surgery at that date so please please please think about it carefully beforehand. Yes, your cornea can be too thin to undergo a second surgery if there is a need to as time pass and your cornea weakens. At that point you're stuck with glasses till you lose your sight if it ever happens. Unlike what YB said, personally i would strongly recommend you to have someone to bring you home after the procedure. Also, you'll be almost definitely on eye drops regularly for the next 2 to 3 months at least. It can go up by alot based on how your eyes adapts. Most importantly, what i see these procedure as is the chance to unfuck your sight at the cost of removing part of your cornea (sounds more painful than it is thanks to technology). So yes, you still need to take care of your eyes after the procedure unlike how you didn't in the past. P.S. personally recommend students (if you are lucky enough to not be working after 21 reasons mentioned by yb in the video) to just give up one of your holiday and do the procedure during it, best period to rest without worries imo.

Have a second consult in two weeks to hopefully clear me to do Lasik. I got a consult done in Newport Beach almost 3 months ago at a very popular place I found also on groupon and yelp. They ran all the scans and said one area of my cornea showed concern cuz of thinness whatever. They said come back in 3 months, redo the scan and if nothing changes, you are good to go for lasik. I'm not even too blind, -2.3 but I've never worn contacts in my life and only wear glasses to drive.

I had a lazy eye and they mentioned I needed to wear an eye patch to school (arrhhahah) We have a place here in Australia called Bailey Nelson and Oscar Wylee. Often we have special deal Eg. 2 pairs for 199.00. Which is totally a bargain. But for special people like you and me we require higher labour which result to higher costs. Sigh haha. I’m 19 and I’m getting lasik this Thursday. I’ve been wearing glasses for 9 years and I’m just tired of them and the ones I currently have are outdated and I’m starting to squint while wearing my glasses. I don’t want to have to get new lenses or whole new glasses I rather just get them permanently fixed and save the money that I would have to spend in the future on lenses and frames and the different features you can get on glasses which I usually get like anti glare and transitioning lenses etc. So my glasses really go up in price especially because I don’t have any vision insurance or anything so I pay out of pocket. I’m really excited and even if you aren’t 22 or in whatever age bracket she said if you’re able to get it done I say go for it. Your eyes really aren’t going to develop much more up until 21 or 22 so getting it should be no problem.

Hi! I did Lasik a week ago, everything went well and I'm using artificial tears to hydrate my eyes. I've to say the main concern I have is not about dry eyes but mainly the fact that with my right eye I see gradient borders, especially when there are letters at TV or windows borders. It seems like borders are not defined and a little blurry. It happens only with my right eye... it's kind of frustrating. I hope it will get better 🤞🏻

@@marcusmoore2942 no, I had to do PTK, another surgery procedure (laser) and everything fixed (only on my right eye). It was because my epithelial layer didn't grow well so I had to start again and make sure that it grew better. It sounds so scary. I'm 24 and my eyes still haven't stabilized. I'm -9 in both and still getting worse each year. And I have an astigmatism and dry eye. I'm just now trying restasis. I'd love not having to wear contacts or glasses and not worry about paying for them. Lasik just sounds so scary. I already have halos at night and of the traffic lights at all hours and am scared to drive at night so I can't imagine it getting worse. I wish I could have lasik, though! I can't even imagine what it would be like to wake up and see or shower or put makeup on without putting in contacts and still be able to see. My eyes have been bad since I was starting elementary school so I don't have any memory of not needing glasses. The eye stuff takes a huge backseat to my chronic pain and I'd rather wake up not in pain but that's not possible. I'm not sure my vision will ever stabilize though so I doubt lasik will ever be a viable choice for me either, Groupon or not. Wow.

Ugh the cost of contact lenses. I have monthly ones which are cheaper than daily but still. I wish I had that bad of a sight....I have "grandma eyes" aka high prescription with both eyes different.(contact lenses are -9.00 and -9.50....extreme nearsighted) I want to get lasic or eye surgery but my fear is something going wrong at this "young"age (I'm in my 20s which is young right...) That is my biggest fear with it. Reason for wanting the surgery is because if I have no glasses or contacts on, my vision is so blurred and being active I want one less thing to worry about. For one I also want to go swim without having fear of losing my vision. Also cost of contacts. Bright side I never on purpose slept in contacts..the times I have were plane flights, car, trains rides and from sheer exhaustion. Question:are you allowed to bring something in the room? For instance something to squeeze. Whenever I have injections or blood drawn I like to squeeze something in the opposite hand as a coping mechanism.usually it's tissue.

It's ok you still have a few years to go! 😉 your eyes will stabilize as you get older, and they use that plastic thing to hold your eye open so you can't even blink if you wanted to! LOL but it's really not scary if I did it you can too :)

Thank you for the sharing your experience. Can you please tell the difference in the starburts at night after two months now in comparison to what they were after first month? And also halos around lights? Has your vision completely stabilized now or if it still becomes fuzzy sometimes.

It's been 3 months now (recorded this early LOL) and I would say my vision has pretty much stabilized! The night vision is still a little glowy but not to the point that it bothers me. It definitely gets less and less as the time goes :)

Did you had trouble driving at night before your lasik surgery bc I’ve been wearing glasses/contacts for almost 5-6 years and whenever I drive at night, I see the halo effect and everything is blurry and uncomfortable, so I only drive whenever I have too if it cannot wait.
@YBChangOfficial
@YBChangOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think I had trouble before the surgery! You should bring it up to your doctor if you decide to do the surgery and they can give you some tips, I think also the blurriness can be caused by dry eyes so eyedrops might help :)

D'vorah N. I’m 26, the optometrist checked and it may be a little astigmatism (they will do another test next week to make sure ) so I had the lasik only to have to wear glasses again.

D'vorah N. No, I had it at a clinic in Spain where I’m from. I think the halos are normal no matter the age. The thing is that they have to disappear after a while, and they haven’t. I hope it’s astigmatism and nothing worse.
