I think Lasius Flavus are so underrated! I think they'll be my next colony once the cold has passed! Absolutely love your videos AV!

Cool! I'm in America and caught 12 Lasius queens last week. I can't wait for the workers to come so I can better identify what species they are! Thanks for the intro video.

Thanks! That's nice. :) In America you have Lasius Neoniger, which do behave very much like Lasius Niger. Got a video about them under the Sp. Introductions Playlist.

You can merge two lasius flavus colonies together, even up to one hundred workers, if you put them in the fridge for 30 seconds to a minute first. Their pheromone makers stop, and, and when they are put together since they are the same species, they merge and create a new pheromone.
@AntsVienna
@AntsVienna 5 жыл бұрын
Wow! That's a merging method I hear for the first time - I might as well try it! 😁 Thanks for the Input!

@@AntsVienna I have never seen anything like them again and I have been interested since I could walk, I can see them in my mind to this day they were in a group at the bottom of the nest all facing inward on a piece of white lyas stone I remember looking at them baffled as to what they were and how they fitted with the nest I took the stone they were not the least disturbed.

Hello, great vid, I was wondering just how shy they are? Because if they are very shy will you barely get to see them?
@AntsVienna
@AntsVienna 5 жыл бұрын
Hello there. I would describe their behavior as "easy going". They are slower and not as hectic as their sister species Lasius Niger. If you keep them in a natural setup you will only see them during feeding, but in Ytong, Plaster, Grout or Acrilic Nests they behave like other Ants do. You can check my latest video on them here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKGZeISfnJqobZI

I heard that few Lasius Flavus Queens can raise colony together but fist generation of workers will kill most Queens leaving only one, at least most of the times.
@AntsVienna
@AntsVienna 5 жыл бұрын
Well, so far putting 2 Queens in a single test-tube has never been a problem. When I put 4 Queens in a single test-tube one got killed and the 3-Queen colony is now over 1 year old and there haven't been any other issues.

So now I know I can put my L. flavus queens together, but how do I know, if I have a Lasius brunneus or flavus queen eithout workers? And can i put them together even when they have Workers? PS: You lured me in from Instagaram. :D
@AntsVienna
@AntsVienna 5 жыл бұрын
Hello - Thanks for joining me here too! I was told that you can put Lasius Flavus Queens together even if they both have workers. For this you have to put both colonies in the Fridge for approximately 10 min and afterwards merge them together. This is supposed to work because they temporary loose their scent and Lasius Flavus are not aggresive intraspecies to begin with. Haven't tried this method myself yet though. Lasius Brunneus Queens are a bit more on the brown side, colourwise.

I always suggest lasius niger for beginners. They are harmless to humans grow fast enough and are very active on the surface - so there is always something to watch :)
