A few years ago, fans with this 3 blade petal prop started surfacing on the market. I figured they were probably obnoxiously loud and didn't move much air so I avoided them. There didn't seem to be any videos of them out there yet, and eventually the curiosity got the better of me and I purchased one.
Much to my surprise, the air movement is decent and the noise level is extremely reasonable. The aerodynamics of the guards seems to be correct. I think it may even move more air and make less noise than the 5-blade models.
Unfortunately, there seem to be pretty serious quality control issues. The blade is severely out of balance, causing the fan to shake excessively on the higher speed. Additionally the bearings seem to be severely lacking lubrication, or perhaps are out of alignment. This is odd--one of the few things Lasko seems to get consistently correct over the last few decades is motors with decent bearings and adequate lubrication.
I will dismantle the unit and see if I can get the motor to operate more freely and balance the blade to a more acceptable margin of error. If I can correct those two things, then this may end up being a perfectly decent fan, with the major caveat of it not being ready to use right out of the box, which is completely unsatisfactory.
