what happens when there is both a resistance in series and parallel to the capacitor. using V=V0(e^-t/rc) which resistance do i use

My teacher skipped the 'lets understand conceptually' part and why the capacitor won't discharge to zero part and asked us to solve questions. Some students applied maths and solved the questions and others will most likely remain in dark over what happened. That's the loss in the JEE rat race.
