Yes, Lasso (Roland de Lassus) was one of the last of the great Netherlanders. It's hard to imagine Gesualdo or many of Monteverdi's chromatic madrigals without the Carminum and similar. He was one of the most famous musicians of his time, but we hardly remember him now--unless we have the good fortune to sing in very good chamber choirs! I had the good luck to belong to such a group in my early 20s called "i cantori." They could sing anything! Don't know if any of their work is still around, but check them out if you can. Their performance of Penderecki's Ecloga VIII was stunning, to name but one example.

I am listening to him tonight because we sang some of his works in choir, 20 years ago now. This song in particular is wild! Also, he was contemporaneous with my persona in the SCA (that I haven't used in a decade).

Huh... I stumbled into this following someone's list, and initially wondered if I was listening to something by Carlo Gesualdo because of the unusual harmony during the Carmina Chromatico. I didn't realize Lassus had this in him. Interesting stuff.

There are no key centers. The following, regarding the first movement, "Carmina Chromatic" is taken from the liner notes on the Hilliard Ensemble's performance of this amazing piece of music: "...the title referring to the complex dissonances and tuning of this extraordinary work. .. The tenor begins on G, which would lead the listener toexpext the Mixolydian mode; in fact a C chord is inserted before one on G, after which we reach the word 'chromatic, where Lassus takes off into Bmaj, C#m and Emma in rapid succession, makes a brief rhetorical pause and then jumps to F#m, completely destabilizing any potential tonal center. In the first eight bars there are chords in all but one of the twelve chromatic semitones...." The entire piece is an early example of chromaticism as opposed to diatonic composition common to western music and very controversial in the 16th century.

Measure 11-12 (Sibylla Persica): isn't this an inverse parallel quint between tenor and bass?
@jsleith4 жыл бұрын
The inverted parallel fifth takes place over a phrase boundary. The tenor will breathe at the end of measure 11 and so his A-D interval won't feel like an interval.
@Achsje4 жыл бұрын
@@jsleith The final cadence of Sybilla Persica actually has the same voice leading in the tenor and bass as in measure 11-12, this time within a single word ('magnus') and thus within a single phrase. As far as I can tell (as an amateur), only 'real', i.e. non-inverted, non-'hidden' parallel fifths are avoided consistently by Lassus and his Franco-Flemish predecessors.
@therealzilch3 жыл бұрын
@@Achsje Indeed. I'm also unaware of any contemporary theorists who disallow inverted parallel fifths.
