I was a B-52D crew chief, stationed at Andersen AFB, and I was on Alert duty there on Nov 9, 1979, when the NORAD false alarm happened. I have never been so terrified in all my life, because NOBODY knew it was a false alarm when it happened. We all thought it was the beginning of WW 3.

Watching this in Dec 2020.....little would they have known back in 83 that the BUFF would still be flying and would be slated to fly until 2040 and beyond. Crazy

Not these models, these were the D models, we fly the H model now, which are still 60 plus years old

@@bobbertee5945 Aware of that fact, but overall, the 52 airframe is still rotating to Guam as a BTF all these decades later. Hell, even the new model (B-52J) with the upgraded engines will someday pull sorties from Andersen.

My crew fueled one of the last Ds at SJAFB,NC in '77, to fly to graveyard, maybe tail # 049. I ran the fuel panel, imagining all the runs that plane and its crews made.

I was at Anderson AFB, my daughter was born there November of 1979. I watched 100's on B52's land and take off. Including other aircraft.

I was a AF brat on Guam 1975 -79. I remember B52d's. I also remember the kc135s, the C141s, the massive C5a Galaxys, and we had an SR71 come in once that I am aware of. I also remember an Australian Vulcan bomber that came to visit during an open house at Andersen.

Australia never operated the Vulcan. Only Great Britain.

I was told it was an RAAF Vulcan.

@@ericgeyer4550 ha, weird feeling knowing I saw this plane as a kid and now I am seeing it before it got there as an adult. Got another laugh as he said the plane's 26 year old age, current active B-52H must be more than twice that!!!

The B52D was the variant of the Tall Tailed B52s to fly in combat.
