06:38 Where to stay
08:10 Personal experiences
0:46 Location - Where is Guam? We're a little island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, within the vicinity of Australia, Hawaii, the Philippine Islands, and Japan. It's very easy to travel from here to other parts of Southeast Asia.
1:34 Size - 30 miles long, about 210 sq. miles. As of 2021, its population is roughly 168,000. From personal experience, you could drive around the entire island in about 2 hours, which means commute from home to workplace is never more than 30-40 minutes.
2:10 Weather - It is consistently humid on Guam. Summertime is when the warmer temperatures are felt with highs between 88-91 degrees F and lows between 77-80 degrees F. You WILL sweat so dress light! Cooler temperatures in the 70s occur during the months of November to January/mid-February.
2:50 Religion - Guam is a predominantly Catholic community, but there are other smaller church groups such as Baptist, Mormon, Seventh Day Adventist, Methodist, etc. that exist.
3:09 Schools - There are 27 public Elementary Schools, 8 public Middle Schools, 6 public High Schools, and about 13-14 private schools that house a variety of grade levels. The two college level schools present are the University of Guam and the Guam Community College. Guam colleges are highly recommended if you want to pursue a degree in Marine Biology.
3:38 Military on Guam - There are two main military installations, one being Andersen Air Force Base in Yigo and the other being Naval Base Guam (Big Navy) in Santa Rita. There are other smaller installations around the island like NCTS, Naval Magazine, Naval Hospital, etc. which means many federal job opportunities AND a high turnover cycle for military personnel and families stationed on Guam.
4:15 People - This mini melting pot is home to so many! Ranging from CHamorus, Filipinos, tourists, military, and other Micronesian Islanders, you're bound to meet people from so many backgrounds and ethnicities. DON'T mix up the CHamorus with "chods"/"chauds." A true CHamoru will be very welcoming and hospitable to newcomers while a chod/chaud will be more closed off.
6:38 Where to stay - This is a broad statement because the bottomline is that you should definitely explore the different areas and villages IN PERSON. From a general description, the noisier, busier parts of Guam would be the villages of Dededo, Tumon, Tamuning, and sometimes east Agana. The quieter areas that are away from the hustle and bustle would be villages like Mangilao, Yona, Talofofo, Inarajan, Asan, Agat, Santa Rita, Umatac, and Merizo.
8:10 Different personal experiences - I'm not going to lie and say everyone has loved Guam; people have either loved their time here or they've hated it. However, it all depends on what YOU make of it. Are you going to stay at home the whole time and miss out on potential experiences and friendships, or are you someone that will explore the island and make an active effort to meet people and discover all the hidden gems Guam has to offer? It's really up to you when you get here.

@@thepokeypanda101 How exciting for you! When we were there, we stayed in the more central areas of Agana Heights and Sinajana. It was within short driving distances to a lot of great spots all around the island. There are a lot of stray dogs but GAIN (Guam Animals in Need) is pretty good about taking them in for potential adoption.

My father got stationed on Guam in the 80s. One of the best things my family did when they got there was go out and explore the island. It just happened to be fiesta time in Yigo and my family just went around and ate at different family celebrations. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly. My siblings and I made so many local friends before we even started school. From then on I enjoyed my stay on Guam. I got off the base all the time to hang out with friends. In school I wasn't isolated like a lot of the base kids who stuck together in groups. My father ended up retiring on Guam an I ended up going to middle school and graduating high school there (Simon Sanchez!). 3 of my siblings married Guamanians. My sister married into a Chamorro family and has lived there for over 30 years now. It's an amazing island with amazing people. My advice to people that get stationed there or move there, don't isolate yourself! Get out and make friends with locals. It will completely change your experience!

I was shipped to Guam in support of Operation Frequent Wind which resulted in the construction of Tin City. While I was working around the clock, I didn’t get out of work and out on the island for several months. This was in the early 70s. When the operation came to an end and I had time to see the island and meet the people I fell in love with Guam. Fortunately, CINCPAC opened up the island for enlisted military families and provided travel and housing. My family lived in Tamuning. My daughter was born at the Naval Hospital in Agana - just prior to Typhoon Pamela making landfall. While it was bad, the islanders were welcoming and sharing food and supplies. My daughter is planning a visit to the island soon!

I lived on Guam from 1949 until 1959. There is a picture of our family and a brief history of why we were there at Guampedia with a search for James Murray Stewart. We lived in Mangilao and I attended Mong Mong school while my brother and sister went to Adelupe (sp?) and George Washington High School. I would love to come back and see all the progress that has been made there. I loved living there as a child and swimming at Tumon beach. There were no hotels or tourists when I lived there. It was all open and free and I loved my chamoru friends. It was heaven!

I was stationed on Guam for two years in the 80's and loved it. The Chamorro people I met were wonderful and I hope to get back one day for a visit to the island. It was very easy to make acquaintances and if you do, you do not need a lot of money to have fun. The people I hung out with did not have a lot of money and I didn't either, but we were happy to see each other when we were together. A very laid back place for me.

Enjoyable video, great commentary and scenery. A quibble: Dry heat is definitely more comfortable than humid heat. You may prefer humid and that’s fine! But there’s a reason that the least livable places with extreme heat also have extreme humidity. (I’m also saying this as I go through the worst heat wave in the Pacific Northwest in recorded history. It hit 114°F at my home today but the humidity was very low. It really would’ve been far worse if it was the opposite.)

6:25 When I went to Guam before, two Micronesian guys (maybe Chamoru) picked up my passport that I dropped by mistake, and I really appreciated it. I panicked because I lost it, until they called me to my room in the hotel and let me know that they had my passport. When I went to the lobby to meet them and get it, they demanded money from me before they were going to give it back to me. Of course it didn't give me a good image of Guam, but as you said, I won't assume that it is what the entire Guam is like.

Oh that discrimination of the 2 types of people on the island described Hawaii perfectly too. The majority of the people were very welcoming, accommodating and nice. There are a few maybe 15-20% of people who are EXTREMELY territorial, rude and unwelcoming to outsiders. They exaggerate and act like everyone who isn’t from there are destroying the island.

Some practical things newbies need to know are: 1. If you're Military for the basic things there's nothing better than the Exchanges/Commissaries 2. If your car breaks down put a "for sale" sign on it before you go for help otherwise it will bet stolen or stripped for parts. 3. For military people entire families are required to attend rules of the sea orientation because of the undertow around the island. That said, Everyone should do that. It could be life or death. The Philippines is a very long way. 4. Fun stuff: Go to the village fiestas. Each village has one every year. You won't regret it.

A Chamoru is a chåd, you can't be a chåd with out being Chamoru. It's so discriminating that you would even mention the word. I am a Chamoru born and raised on Guåhan and I was called a chåd this and that...so it's not really nice in my opinion. Chamorus are VERY welcoming but just like Asians, Micronesians, and other ethnicities, they have bad apples or perhaps unwelcoming people. It does not give anyone the right to categorize them and discriminate by calling "them" a word. Since you are have Chamoru I wonder if you were ever mistreated for being a Chamoru? Well I have maybe because I am chåd...but I always stayed true to the land an my people. Also, the Chamorus are all about our land and not just our people. Esta!
@DaniAdams
@DaniAdams 2 жыл бұрын
No I was never mistreated for being Chamoru, but I did grow up learning that "chaud" is a slang term, the Guam equivalent of redneck haha. I'm sure some people who used the term probably threw it around casually and didn't know that it wasn't synonymous with all Chamoru people. Who knows, maybe you and I were taught different versions of the word, just like it would happen in many different cultures 😊
@natalievelasco2120
@natalievelasco2120 2 жыл бұрын
@@DaniAdams Håfa Adai nen. Now what I'm about to express might catch you off guard but what you need to understand is that I'm only looking out for my Chamoru people who have suffered a lot of discrimination in many generations and continue love and respect anyone who calls Guam home. You have definitely been misinformed about the discriminating word "Chåd" "Chaud". Maybe this generation has made it a different slang by using it so freely not understanding that it can be offensive to our manåmko. I am older than you I'm sure so in my day every "bad" or "unkept" Chamoru person was a chåd and I was one of them. Now I never made such a big deal until I started seeing the quick judgment made instead of helping the children find the true underlying problems. Now of course it's no one's problem to take care of, but when people show concern for other children in different countries it makes me think why not the Chamoru children? Anyway, just like how you mentioned "redneck" I am sure a Caucasian person might not appreciate that term being used because it can be offensive even if you find it funny. Now I can't be a redneck because I'm not Caucasian and just like you can't be a Chåd without having the blood of a Chamoru. Like I can't be considered a "FOB" because I am Chamoru. My husband who is a Filipino born and raised on Guam still can not be a "Chåd" because he is not Chamoru even if he has picked up some of our slang or cultural lifestyle. Now he is much closer to being a "FOB" because he is a first generation American Filipino. Thankfully he is respectful of me being Chamoru and cultural differences because the Chamoru people should have every right to express that we are different from Filipinos. The true locals of Guam are the Chamoru people and it's sad because there is so much confusion on this topic. Ok so at some point the Chamoru people came from the unknown but thats human life...many cultures have migrated from other countries becoming their own where they settle and that's exactly what the Chamoru people have done. Many Filipinos have Spanish last names and when they come to me and say "Are you sure you're not Filipino because your last name?" Mind you I carry my husband's and it's so Spanish... If you can look closely at our people versus the many Asians (Filipinos) and Micronesians who have migrated to Guam you will see the difference. It's important. My children are half Chamoru and half Filipino and I express the difference because it's ok to be different and proud of it. The Chamoru people have many ancestors who fought for us to continue living our culture and to not be afraid to stand up. I can only hope you understand where I am coming from 🙏🏽🤙🏽 Truly, I am speaking from the heart. Si yu'us ma'åse.

@@natalievelasco2120 Yes! That is why I said in my video for people not to assume all Chamorus act that way. I'm looking out for my home so that visitors don't encounter a negative person and think that all Guamanians are like that. I especially have to emphasize it to the new generation who are more on social media and platforms like this because they might not have the opportunity to hear it from your generation. Thank you for looking out for the Chamorus too! 💛

Hi Dani, Im so glad I found your videos. I fell in live with Guam when I first went there about 25 years ago. i was with the navy, and a navy diver. we stayed at the Hyatt in Tuman… I thought I died and went to heaven! Now that Ive retired from the fire dept in San Diego, Im thinking about building a house there in Guam. ( i have a general contractor license). I really miss the Guam vibes. I was always sad leaving. Hafa dai pretty lady!

I'm so happy you loved your experiences here! I know for a fact that I have to come back at least once a year to soak up these awesome island vibes. That would be so awesome for you to build a home here--vacation home or your forever home? Where on the island did you like living?

@@DaniAdams Hi Dani, I would build a home to live in! Just a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house, with a view! hopefully. I really loved Tumon of course for the activities. The beaches in front of the Hyatt hotel and the other hotels are amazing! I wish I were there right now. I am only sad to hear that drugs and crime are bad in Guam now. Another KZbin guy named Adam, has talked about that. Oh, so you don't live on Guam full time?

@@John33gfed The great thing is how everything is so close too, so no matter where you live on the island, it's never that far from everything else. Yes that's correct--I'm not currently on Guam. My family and I are stationed out in Virginia so visiting my home island is going to become a must every year 🇬🇺❤
