The original unaltered version of the game makes 1000x more sense story-wise and powers-wise since it all comes from the Fist of the North Star ANIME series " Hokuto No Ken 2 " and the manga; Kenshiro's "powers" are his punches and kick hitting secret pressure points/energy points on an opponent's body causing the exploding body parts, and him boosting up his physical strength and speed with his Ki (when his shirt rips off him) Sega of America altered the back story, character names and inserted made-up dialogue so the whole story made NO sense and kind of ruined the narrative of the game, a story of Kenshiro trying to find his long-lost brother and bring freedom to citizens from violent tyrants exploiting and slaughtering innocent people...

Last Battle was the third Sega Genesis game I owned, after the pack-in Altered Beast and a purchased copy of Golden Axe; I was still very much playing a lot of NES and Sega Master System, so I was slow to fill out my Genesis library in the beginning. I remember I sank so much time into this game, both intrigued by the setting and gameplay, and frustrated by the lack of continues. I think my love of Black Belt on SMS is what drove me to play this game so much. I didn't know it yet, but I was in fact a big fan of the source material. I guess I just liked watching my enemies explode into pieces or suddenly melt into a puddle of goo. :) Funny trivia: I didn't get into Anime until around '94, when my mom rented Mermaid's Scar for me believing I'd enjoy the medium (she was absolutely correct). Fist of the North Star was the fourth Anime I ended up watching (after Akira and Ninja Scroll). Almost a one-to-one comparison with its Sega Genesis counterpart. I don't exactly remember when I picked up Black Belt as a kid, but I feel like it was farther off than the others, like fifth or sixth owned SMS game.

I bought this game back in the day at Toys R US. Like you, I was definitely sold on the graphics. At that time I had no idea it was originally a Hokuto No Ken/Fist of the North Star game. I wasn't really aware of Fist of the North Star at that time. I knew there was a Nintendo game with that title, but I had never paid any attention to it. The graphics did impress me quite a bit. I thought it was a very cool looking game. The story line is pretty much non existent. The game is tough as nails, and I did play the hell out of it (you kinda had to back in the day when it wasn't feasible to purchase a lot of games). I did manage to beat it several times, and I was (and still am) quite proud of myself. One of my very first games for the Genesis. I have vivid memories of playing New Year’s Eve as it turned 1990. What a party! I think it gets some hate because although it’s BEAUTIFUL and has huge characters, it just doesn’t feel as good as it looks. And that ridiculous sound when you kick; come on! But man, once you got powered up, that’s were the fun REALLY began! Loved how you could travel freely among the locations on the map. For the selection that was available at the time (launch title), it was was pretty great! I’d love to get my hands on the Megadrive version (there’s blood)! Also, isn’t there some relation to Black Belt on the SMS? A GREAT game, by the way; parallax scrolling, too! Love me some Last Battle; in fact, I think I might go play it right now!

I know it's been mentioned before, but would love to see you check out Black Belt for Sega Master System. I owned it as a kid, and it's one of my favorite games. Black Belt was the title of Hakuto No Ken in the states for SMS. Similar to "Last Batle", they had to localize it because of licensing rights. The special case for Black Belt was that Yuji Naka worked on Black Belt, and the gameplay and MUSIC are just incredible. The boss music from Black Belt still reigns supreme in my head today. There are not a lot of tracks in that game, but from the themes that were there, are incredible.

It's funny that they kept the violent boss deaths by changing the skin and blood color to a nonhuman green or yellow, yet they couldn't do the same for the basic enemies. They should have replaced the mentally scarring red blood with non-offensive purple ooze and called them Slime Soldiers. I guarantee that would have sold better in the US in the pre-Mortal Kombat days.

One of the problems of the Megadrive/Genesis during it's first two years was that it had very few games that excelled and made it to the top of it's catalog, that advantage that it had over the Super Nintendo for being released earlier was wasted.
@Prizrak-hv6qk3 жыл бұрын
@@Hektols Umm... it's like that with pretty much every game system. If it was worse with the Genesis, it was due to the lack of AAA third party support in the first 3 years. Sega had to carry the system mostly on their own, while still supporting the SMS! I addition, the high ROM costs prevented the system from hitting its full potential within those two years, when most games were limited to the measly 4 Mbit carts. Still, those years did bring us gems like Ghouls and Ghosts, Strider, Revenge of Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Castle of Illusion, Thunder Force 3, MUSHA, Phantasy Star 2, Herzog Zwei, Golden Axe, etc.

This was a nostalgic one. I remember seeing the Fist of the North Star movie (1986) at a little 'art theatre' (it was a room with fold out chairs and a portable/standalone projector). I knew that this game was part of that universe without the license, but didn't recognize any of the characters save for the main/player, that was because the movie covers the first part of the story while this game follows the 2nd part. I also had Black Belt on the Master System(which follows the first part of the story) and aside from enemies exploding from your attacks, the characters were changed from the original. This was also one of those games I got 'wishing' it was another game (jones-ing for Final Fight from the arcade, Last Battle had large sprites and seemed like proof to me that the Genesis could someday see Final Fight as well).

I mean that's the thing it's one thing to strip away the license which does suck but to neuter it too boy that doubly sucked. You realize without the two elements that it had going for it that they took away there's not really much left besides that mostly boring fairly generic game. I'm not saying even the original game holds up that great now but just seeing the original looks more fun and over the top then this boring clearly lacking game.

I got it as a birthday present, Did not know it was based on Fist of the North Star until a year later, I really love the detailed main Sprite but even as a kid knew something was wrong with the translation and I though the main character looked like he was dancing at first. I was also happy when I finished it as you only had one life.

Memory T Cell is basically Kenshiro in the Cells at Work anime really fits him against Cancer Cell in LAST BATTLE.

Glad it wasn’t just me that had a love/hate relationship with this game. When you’re 16 and shell out 50 bones for this, you try to convince yourself that it is good even though most of your friends played it once or twice and were 👍

It’s wild to hear him say that about the music when my sole reason for coming to this video was to hear that beat again.. I love that tune!!! Was the most memorable part of that game Had no idea that this was actually fist of the Northstar no wonder It was so fucking awesome

Good review. I honestly feel like this about most gen 3 & 4 games but still find them fascinating.

I for one always liked this game. It’s on the cheap end but it has a certain charm that goes with the movie Fist of the North Star. Last battle was also an early title and seeing the main character standing tall, looking tough was so awesome to behold.

Last battle is such a "Early Genesis era" game to me! 1989 !

This was the second game i got for my megadrive. At the time i thought the large sprites were amazing! The difficulty is no joke though, i managed to get to the second boss but i needed game genie to finish the game.

This was one of the first Genesis games I got as a kid. Took me a long time but I eventually beat it. Didn't have a lot of options back then. Accurate review. Think I'll give the Mega Drive version a try sometime.

I played it back in the day so the nostalgia influence is there for me.

This was one of my earlier Genesis games. While I still feel it has very stiff controls and a very frustrating design, its still one that I have very vivid memories playing. It’s probably because it was such a visual leap from my previous consoles.

I waited for this day, this game drove me bonkers back in the day. Beautiful huge sprites but the gameplay was confusing & such a pita. This was a game I wanted to beat so very badly as a kid and never could figure it out. I still can't beat it today without save states.

It was the 16bit version of Black Belt from the Master System. Both based on fist of the northstar.

I love Last Battle, like you I do have a lot of nostalgia for the game. Back when this game came out I knew it was a Fist of the Northstar game, that drew me to it even more. But yes, it was an extremely difficult game, yet I kept going back for more.

I find it interesting to compare what different KZbinrs say about the same things! You seem to be more positive towards Last Battle than most others, and you’re right, it’s a game you’d only really enjoy if you were an early Mega Drive adopter! The guy behind Classic Gaming Quarterly on the other hand, not only hates Last Battle, but considers Space Harrier 2, a game you don’t think so highly of, to be good enough for a weekend rental! Some games you may only really enjoy if you’re a fan of the IP they’re based on, or if there isn’t much else available for the console it’s on. Space Jam and Sonic R on the Sega Saturn are 2 VERY good examples of this for me. They aren’t the best games of their genres, they don’t have much content, but they are both tied to IPs I am passionate about and there wasn’t much else available for the Saturn outside Japan! Even the PlayStation didn’t have much in the way of kid’s games at the time! You may not think much of Alex Kidd in The Enchanted Castle, but I can still get some enjoyment out of it, and it wouldn’t be until 1990 that the Mega Drive would get another cartoony platform game in the form of Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse!

My first and favorite Genesis game. If only I knew back then that by holding some buttons, you could have infinite continues. I think you should hold the start button when you die.

I loved this game! I think the Japanese version would’ve blown my mind back then. And it really aged well
