Great video as always, I have loved all my Sega consoles from the Master System, Mega Drive, Saturn and of course the powerhouse that was Dreamcast, it's such a shame that Sega don't make consoles anymore... as I have so many memorable moments that I shall never forget, more so than any other company SEGA got me into gaming... Keep up the good work Sega Lord X.

You do great job of combining factual information as well as oral history and are doing a lot more to preserve the history of the hobby than most other youtubers (especially ones who put historian in their names and upload a few videos a year full of stuff everyone knows anyway). Sales, ip disputes, and hardware specs are all very minor parts of videogaming; the interesting thing about them is how they make us feel.

It's all about the games, these days who gives a crap about hardware specs, we didn't even know any tech mumbo jumbo back then, we thought a game looked awesome, we played it.

He also gives some lesser known games some time in the spotlight, stuff like Master System ports of Mega Drive games or forgotten arcade ports and smaller releases that don’t end up on top 10 lists but are pretty fun. I’m also a big fan of how he gives his own opinion on a lot of games that have developed bad reputations in popular culture, but doesn’t make a big thing about him going against the mould and it being a controversial opinion.
@justanotheryoutubechannel2 жыл бұрын
@@Chemical_Ali I’m not the biggest fan of it as it looks and feels much choppier than the arcade game which is one of my favourite games ever, I even poured loads of time and virtual money into during my play through of the Shenmue games. I understand his point but I don’t think it’s as bad as he said either. I would love to own a copy someday still though, and I also hope it gets fan-ported to the Sega CD or modded into the arcade engine.

Well put. There are quite a few "reviewers" who are GIVEN products for better reviews. That is especially true with Hasbro Marvel Legends and Star Wars Black Series figures. There are a few higher end reviewers who get cases of early bird specials that they can show before others. Now with Retro Gaming, that's usually not even an issue since their all out of business or have stopped producing games and systems. But either way you can tell if a reviewer is "shilling" for the parent company. This channel is a perfect example of decent and honest reviews!

89-99, what an amazing 10 years for Sega - they released the Genesis, the Game Gear, the Sega CD, the 32X, the Nomad, the Saturn and the Dreamcast. Now one cycle of consoles is almost 10-years. I asked my nephew if the kids at his middle school were hyped about the new XBS1 and PS5, and he said no, everyone wants a Switch so they can play Minecraft and Fortnite. What boring little pukes.
@Bloodreign13 жыл бұрын
They came up on a generation of games that play it too safe, and have little to no creativity to them, unlike the old days, where devs took chances, they either worked, or bombed, so the programmers would go back to the drawing board coming up with the next unique idea. We think it's bad now with kids and young adults playing boring crap like Fortnite and Minecraft, and the yearly Activision version of Madden, known as Call of Duty, but it'll only continue to roll further and faster downhill.

There is no point to new generations anymore. Consoles are just PC architecture with DRM at this point, and raytracing or higher resolutions doesn't exactly add much of any exciting new design possibilities for games. At least the Switch hardware offers a novel experience to play in its handheld mode. We won't see a blatantly revolutionary generational leap like 8 bit -> 16 bit or 2D -> 3D until Elon gets those things to hook up to our brains...

I can appreciate their preferences, Minecraft is all about the creativity, and isn't making cutting edge graphics and power the priority. While Fortnite also runs on just about anything these days, so it doesn't leverage the latest most powerful machines out there. As for the Switch, it's a portable when you want it to be, much easier to take on the go. The new consoles are very impressive, and I can't wait to see what new experiences they will host in the coming years, but right now they are very hard to get (if you want to pay normal prices), do not really have exclusive games and won't truly for a while. I like what Sony is doing with the Dual Sense controllers and their haptic feedback, hopefully they will incorporate this into the next gen PSVR controls.

They were great at the time, because that level of sound and graphics was so new, and because that's all there was to play (Alex Kidd however was and remains one of the worst games ever made.) I think it shows just how great the system was when some of the earliest titles (Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe) are still considered all-time classics for the console.

The last bit of your narration literally swelled me up enough to bring tears. Happy tears based on how similar the memories and much of what yiu said was for me and based on how much people love your content, i'm sure there are many others that share this opinion. And mostly like they all swelled up too. Unfortunately, i wasnt part of this generation, my first console with earned money was an xbox 360 when i was 15. But since i was a small child my cheap parents only got my 2nd hand hammy downs which for me amazingly was the genesis. And man when i played Altered Beast for the first time like u i was amazed. I truly dont understand where the "bad reviews" for that game come from? Its really awesome the only thing that sucked was that it was too short. How bad can a game be when the biggest complaint is that you cant play it anymore? It must be awesome enough to crave more of it. Anyways brother, love your content and honestly if wasnt for you and your videos i would of never gotten into youtube retro game content creators. Again im pretty sure im not alone on this and I wish you much continued success for your great research that in the sega world is 2nd to none. Much love to you and your family bro. -Albert

This is a magnificent video. I got my Genesis in 1991 with Sonic but was playing it at friends' houses a couple years prior along with lots of TG-16 games as well. My friends were weird. I only knew one person who had an NES. A girl I liked. But we lost touch in 1989. But, I was still happy to finally get a Genesis after playing mostly TI-99 and old Atari games for years. PARSEC, Espial, Adventure, Choplifter, Robot Tank, and Xevious still rule. I was never a sports fan (and still am not) but lately I've been bouncing around the idea of adding a very select few sports titles to my Genesis Mini. But, I am in over my head as I have never been familiar with those game, although I do have a great memory of playing a baseball game on the Master System with a friend of mine in 1989. BTW I LOOOOVE Altered Beast. Pure nostalgia.

The first batch of Mega Drive/Genesis games were only given around four months or six months to develop back in *1987* or in very early 1988.. so the development teams were given almost NO time to learn how to utilize the full capabilities of the console, and they were not given the the time to improve the games visually and technically. This was to rush them to release of the Mega Drive in Japan in 1988. ROM chips larger than the one's they used in 1987~1990 were pricey. Games developed in 1989 and 1990 with longer development had much better visuals and less technical flaws. So when these early games got released here in the US and EU, they were already over a year or more old, since some had started development as early as 1987 and being rushed through development... IMO Space Harrier II was pretty awesome though. I used a cart swap trick to make Alex invincible in Alex Kidd on the Genesis, and I beat they whole game, I enjoyed it. I did replay a lot of my Master System games using the Power Base Converter until some impressive games like Mystic Defender was released, and eventually got Sword of Vermilion. That RPG was pretty fun IMO, and the music in the game was as impressive as Revenge of Shinobi's music.

One of the best periods of time with gaming for me was having the Genesis and Turbografx-16 being launched almost simultaneously; I picked up the Genesis one week after release day. Ghouls and Ghosts and Thunder Force II were the best of the immediate launch games, and Altered Beast was fine as a pack in; Last Battle (Still played it and tried to like the game) and Alex Kidd-EC (Lost interest quickly) did not measure up to Black Belt and Miracle World, so they were pretty disappointing. Super Thunder Blade was the worst of the launch titles; I bought it because it was the only game that my circle of friends collectively did not have yet; big, bitter waste of fifty bucks right there. Revenge of Shinobi in January of 1990 was truly awesome in every way, and the console(s) euphoria continued on for a couple of years from there. Good Times!

I've always loved this channel. I'm kinda mad for the SEGA 16-bit generation, but this video confirms my personal impression about the very first generation of games for the Mega Drive (sorry, I'm european): in 1989, some developers still never knew how to program well on a 16-bit home machine (or just on the SEGA console, maybe) and the results were garbage like Space Harrier II, Last Blade and some other titles mentioned here. A series that I've never liked was Golden Axe: the first game was programmed with a lot of unfair CPU tricks, and the two following chapter was the same game at the end. But I personally found the third installment to be particularly choppy...I mean, it plays BAAAAAAD, even for the standards of its era. Just a personal opinion. Cheers, Mr. Sega Lord!

I really love this generation of gaming. I had a snes but have recently bought the megadrive mini and turbo grafx mini. The turbo had no presence in Australia. Each console had different strengths and unique hardware, unlike today where all three consoles are similar in design. This meant we received games tailored to the hardware's respective strengths. This channel and nes works do important work in preserving the history of games..

I missed the very beginning of the Genesis launch. I was introduced to the system in 91 when a roommate showed me Phantasy Star 3 and Sonic the Hedgehog. I was hooked, and that NES I owned suddenly became old hat. Of all the games you featured, I feel Revenge of Shinobi has aged the best, followed by Super Hang-On and Truxton.

Yet today, the NES, SNES, and the Genesis are fondly remembered by old school gamers and collectors, and in some degree the SMS as well, and the Game Boy and Game Gear,

@@reclaimer1178 Nostalgia is a fickle thing. My last console generation was PS3. Any modern games I do nowadays are on PC, and I mostly stick to NES and Genesis games. In fact, I'm just about to wrap up a full playthrough of the Phantasy Star tetralogy which has occupied almoat all of my free time for the last three weeks. Feels nice to play them again.

I didn't care for the concept, but Vectorman's gameplay is rock-solid. The smooth 60fps felt great to play before I even knew what that meant

Vectorman is awesome
@michaeloffgrid3 жыл бұрын
The real problem with Vectorman is the camera is too zoomed in. You end up getting hit by enemies and projectiles before you realize they are on screen. With a camera that showed more of the surrounding area, I think you'd have a really solid action platformer.

@@SegaLordX as a massive Sonic fan, I can agree that the sonic Fandom doesn't understand much. They can't accept criticism and whatnot. Sonic is great, but isn't perfect. Sega has a life outside of Sonic. I just wish Sega understood that nowadays too.

Some of these games like Revenge of Shinobi, Hang-On, G & G, Truxton and Golden Axe are still awesome. But without Sonic and the EA Sports games, the Genesis wouldn't have become a mainstream console. It could've been more like the TG-16 - more of a niche system even with a great game library.

The Japanese Fist of the North was so much better than the US Last Battle. My favorite launch title of Genesis was Thunder Force 2 by a huge margin. I was simply blown away by the graphics and sound.

The voice over in Thunder Force 2 by today's standard might be considered cheesey but I LOVED it back in the day and still get excited today by it when I play it

While I knew Last Battle had something to do with Hokuto No Ken, I couldn't place it because the game covers events after the first series/movie (I had only seen the movie at that point). I was impressed with the size of the sprites in Last Battle, the logic back then was 'if the Genesis can handle this, it should be able to do a port of Final Fight' and with several Capcom games on the system I always held hope it would show up. I loved Thunder Force 2, it led me to get other Tecnosoft titles, which included Herzog Zwei, that was one of my favorites back then.

Got my Genesis on Sunday November 12, 1989. I remember it like it was yesterday. I also got Thunder Force 2 as well. My best friend was there that day, and we immediately went to my room, unhooked my SMS, and plugged in the Genesis. Spent the rest of the day playing TF2. He came over again the following weekend, and we spent all Friday, Saturday, and most of Sunday switching between Altered Beast and TF2. That Christmas, I hit the jackpot with games. I got Space Harrier 2, Ghouls N Ghosts, and Revenge of Shinobi.
