(8 Jul 1948) With the end of the British Mandate the last troops leave Haifa and the Israeli flag is raised. Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion, was present at the taking over ceremony.

On the last day of the Mandate, the Chief Secretary of the British Administration called a press conference in his Jerusalem office. One of the journalists there asked: "And to whom do you intend to give the keys to your office?". "I shall leave them under the mat", was the reply.

When I visited London in 2016, I met a retired lieutenant general of British Army. He was deployed in Palestine from 1945-48. He claimed to have survived 3 attacks by Irgun & Lehi. When I asked him ‘Whom did you support in the Palestine civil war??’ He replied ‘Nobody. If we supported Jews then Arabs would attack us. If we supported Arabs then Jews would attack us. We didn’t want to be parts of this conflict anymore. We just wanted to come back home safely’
