I loved the look and the comment “this is quite a predicament ”. I have a bite Mary has a bite, Mary’s taking a nap. If I had a nickel every time I heard that. Great video. Keep em coming.

Hey Capt Zac- another fun video to watch. You have me missing my first summer to AK in 10 years. That’ll set you back on your heals a little….. but I still hit it well on the Atlantic coast. Looking fwd to some Pacific pounding action next summer! :) I think what maybe happened when you lost that nicer fish well off the bottom (early in the video) is that the fish was shaking his head and that big jig weight was bouncing back and forth with each head shake. I sometimes lose east coast fluke (flounder) the same way when they’re head thrashing down there. Best you can do is keep constant tension on the line and crank as the fish allows. Win some and every once in a while the fish wins. It stings but you get over it on the next bite. Tight Lines, Merry Christmas, Best & Safe 2024 Wishes. We’ll see you in the coming year!

Hi Geoff many thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Yes indeed it is frustrating when the "shake shake" leads to "fish off" but the thrill of boating a big flat fish keeps us coming back! Looking forward to some tight lines later this summer my friend! Tight lines! Captain Zac

I was watching and wondering, you are retrieving in a cadence or rhythm. The fish that get away after a long haul up, are the timing your pace? The hooks are barbed right? Maybe they wise up on the trip up. Maybe change it up to 2 cranks vs 1 or 3 and a quick pause. Just a thought. Great videos. Keep them coming please.

Hi Mike thanks for stopping by! Yes I am using barbed hooks. Yes anytime a fish gets off it is quite frustrating - often because of either a bad initial hookset, a "head shake" that throws the hook and/or a slacked line which dislodges the hook. Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac

Sorry to bother, do you have a video of your fishing gear? Rod, reel, line size .

No problem - I don't have a video on this yet but I'm using a Penn Slammer IV 8500 spinning reel with 80lb PowerPro braid on a Penn Carnage III Jigging Spinning Rod

I still guide for Flyfishing in CO. Was in AK while in the Coast Guard, last century. I’m ready to go to the dark side Spin casting and deep water fishing. You and Mary are my escape till it happens. Thanks to you both.
@CaptainZac10 ай бұрын
That's awesome - guiding fly fishing in CO sounds like a blast! haha the "dark side"... If it helps matters any, I still enjoy fly fishing and at one point was really into tying my own flies for trout and steelhead in PA. Both fly fishing and deepwater/spin fishing can co-exist! haha Thanks for your service by the way! Tight lines! Captain Zac
Just an observation but you mess with the drag too much and you put too much bait on the hook. I have been fishing for 65 years and have a little experience.
@CaptainZac Жыл бұрын
Hi @milstuff4530 thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment. The reason I frequently adjust the drag is that I prefer to "lock down" the drag when setting the hook to maximize the hookset power. I've found that if the drag spools of the reel when I yank, the hookset is compromised. My two main focus areas regarding the amount of bait are 1) ensuring optimal hook clearance (i.e. the bait shouldn't obstruct a clean hookset) and 2) ensuring a streamlined action (i.e. strips of salmon or squid that "flutter", especially if I'm fishing the jig with a grub). Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac
