Just got back from my annual Elfin Cove unguided trip. Fished the 16 oz and 7 oz fire eye jig exclusively. Very impressed, 3 in the boat 2 with the fire eyes and my wife with bait. Caught 20 keepers and 35 chickens for the 5 days, 53 total on fire eyes and 2 on bait! Didn’t try the chicken slayer, probably should have. Love the jigs.

Hi Terry thanks for the update and CONGRATS on such a great week of fishing over at Elfin Cove! Sounds like you had some really great action, especially for self-guided fishing! I'm thrilled to hear that the fire eye glow jigs produced some rod-bending action. With 20 keeper halibut, I'm sure you returned home with enough fillets to fill the freezer and share with friends and family. Sounds like you had an amazing Alaskan adventure - I bet you are already looking forward to your next trip! Congrats once again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Hi Brian thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Yes indeed - you make a great point that the future halibut fishing around here should be strong given the number of smaller fish! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Thanks Midnight Sun I appreciate you tuning in and am glad you enjoyed this halibut footage! Sorry the halis aren't cooperating on your end - once everyone switches to salmon trolling (with the derby coming up), there should be pretty light pressure on the halibut in the next few weeks! Hello 👋 what is the pole and reel are you using to Halibut fish? Nice Halibut catch 👍🤙
@CaptainZac3 жыл бұрын
Hi Wisskey8t9 thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! I'm using a Penn Carnage II jigging spinning rod (rated for 80-100lb braid) with a Penn Slammer III 8500 reel spooled with 80lb Power Pro. I like this setup because it can handle a big barn door but still makes it fun to catch smaller fish (vs. a "pool stick" that some folks use). What setup to you use for halibut? Tight lines! Which jig did you use? Great job guys💪

Hi Sheryl many thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! I appreciate the kind words! We were using the jigs that I created and sell - Fire Eye Glow Jigs (link here: www.ebay.com/str/fromrodtotable). Over the years, I've found these to be very effective for halibut fishing. Thanks once again for tuning in and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

What’s the reason behind only using spin rods for jigging?
@CaptainZac3 жыл бұрын
Hi John thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! While I do have (and use) conventional gear sometimes, we enjoy using spinning gear for the ease of jigging and fun battle when fighting the fish. I find that when jigging, the position of a spinning reel makes it more comfortable to jig for extended sessions (the reel seamlessly following underneath each jigging stroke vs. a top-heavy conventional). Also, most conventional rods are basically "pool sticks" that prohibit anglers from feeling / playing a fish. Since we catch enough halibut around here, one of the reasons we continue to fish for halibut (and often catch and release) is the thrill of battling the halibut on a lighter rod with enough feel to detect the bite, have rod-bending and drag-screaming runs, etc. Plus, over the years we've proven that this gear is capable of catching halibut from 2 - 200 lbs, so we don't feel like there is any disadvantage here. Have you ever tried using spinning gear for halibut? Thanks again for stopping by and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
