Last Chance Cripples mimic an emerging mayfly (PMD to be exact) that has a crippled wing or cannot emerge from its casing. This is a fairly common phenomena for many aquatic bugs, especially the Pale Morning Dun. These crippled bugs make for an easy meal for trout and therefor trout will rise to them more often than a healthy bug. Healthy bugs fly away, but crippled bugs do not, and therefor its a bigger chance that their energy spent rising to a bug will result in a meal.
Not only are these effective, but they are also very easy to tie. In fact, I find them slightly easier to tie than catskill style flies or even parachute flies. The only thing that costs a fair amount of money when tying these is the hackle and hook. The rest of the materials are not bad, and it doesn't take a ton of them. Once you have the dry fly hackle, and some hooks, all you really need is some dubbing and a couple variegated feathers. Mallard flank can be substituted for the expensive wood duck if you would like. Or even use a different tailing material. Also the turkey Biot body could be substituted for goose Biot, but I find the turkey to be longer and easier to work with for bodies. Do not save money though buying the hackle as you will be very disappointed in low quality hackle. I have included a link to a whiting cape assortment (4 pack introductory hackle) that gives you 4 different colors, and enough hackle to tie 100's of flies in 4 colors and multiple different sizes. Best deal in hackle for sure!
As always I am listing all the materials I used on this fly with links to where you can purchase them.

I tie something a little similar with a curved hook shank. A Klinkhammer to be exact. You tied this very well. I am over cautious so I put some UV epoxy over the boot body which is probably overkill.

For sure, putting resin over the body will help. But if you paint on some glue under it, it works better. Just dab some super glue or head cement on the thread wraps before wrapping the Biot. Thanks man! :)

Do you have a lot of mayfly hatches in TX?

Not like Colorado... lol! There here and you can use these (I don’t think there are PMD’s though, but I still tie flies for other areas.

@@McFlyAngler I can't believe that Tx still hasn't approved your license. Dirty pool, Peter! I remember the last time I visited the hot springs in Pagosa that thousands of mayfiles hatched from San Juan and were swarming around the hot pools. CO is mayfly Mecca.

It’s not Texas, it’s the federal level. Called an excise tax. I have a Texas license now, just waiting for the IRS to approve my license before I sell.

Mcfly I need help with something I have been tying flies and teasers with the hook up, mostly all of my flies are hook up. my question to you does it matter if the hook is up or if the hook is down please give me info on this. Have I been time my flies wrong?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
No, I tie many flies hook point up. Down is generally easier depending on the pattern, and the weight of the hook bend will at times make it durn upside down (or right side up depending on your perception of it).

McFly Angler thanx I was worried. I fish in NY mostly surf fishing for stripe bass and blue fish. Blues, it don’t matter what you put on that hook they will hit it. But stripers can be really picky . Thanx for the response

Oh yeah I then would rather fish hook point up. Your using weight like dumbbells to keep the hook point up I’m sure. Lots of surf and ocean patterns are hook point up. You commented on a dry fly, so I figured your talking trout flies. Check out my saltwater streamers, I tie lots of salt stuff.
