Boy, this made me sad and happy at the same time. Sad, obviously because they retired the Concorde fleet. Happy, because of the respect that the ATC and pilots demonstrated for each other in this audio clip. I wonder if they had some type of farewell party for the Concorde pilots, like a get together amongst airline pilots so that they could interact and talk about what it's like to fly this incredible machine... Hmmm. It would have been really cool.

You're wrong. Here is the official figures: 20 Concordes were built and 14 entered airline service. There were 2 prototypes, 2 pre-production models and 2 "first off the line" production models. If the British Government got their heads out of the backsides and let Richard Branson and his Virgin Atlantic airline group take over concorde she would be still flying today
@PikalaxALT9 жыл бұрын
Paul Jones Unlikely, the fleet is old as it is. Aircraft beyond a certain age are not fit to fly, and Airbus, the company that purchased Concorde's manufacture, has no plans of replacing Concorde any time soon. Plus it's mad expensive; have you seen how much it costs just to gas up your car?
@mitairlines9 жыл бұрын
PikalaxALT Yeah, the concorde is an extremely inefficient plane. Uses lots of fuel, loud, and dirty (pollution). It is illegal to fly over North America and Europe at supersonic speeds, so the only part is over the ocean. Personally, I'd like to see some investment in teleportation!

Concorde has plenty of hours left on their airframes. They were, still are, one of the safest aircraft around. It's just the useless French who put shitty tires and conduct piss poor maintenance that let her down. Spares were available and Branson wanted to operate her. She also made BA an absolute fortune.
@r12004rewy3 жыл бұрын
At last someone else who knows that it was poor Air France maintenance that contributed to the crash of their Concorde, BA were making profits with their fleet, I believe Airbus withdrew its certificate of airworthness that was the final nail in the coffin for Concorde, she had plenty of life left in her but the French didn't agree and they must be obeyed

To other times you make always a good transmission." His answer: "I could not read back due my tears were running!" Closing this airport was wrong!

BA lead the way in creating a profitable operation with this superb Aircraft.
@InuKun200813 жыл бұрын
@HuskyMaxx Well, it's the stiff uppper lip factor. BA owns the patent on the paint needed due to the extreme expansion force the Concorde experienced during flight and didn't want to share it except with Air France (for obvious reasons) and Singapore Airlines who dry-leased a Concorde from them. In addition to Braniff International Airways who legally owned Air France and British Airways Concordes during the flights between Washington Dulles and Dallas-Fort Worth before continuing on to Europe.
@Trainlover199511 жыл бұрын
I still think they made the wrong choice in retiring Concorde. It could have been used for other express flights by other airlines, like for Transpacific flights from San Francisco-Tokyo or San Fransisco-Hong Kong, Trans-Siberian flights from Shanghai to Mosow, or transcontinental flights from San Francisco-New York or Beijing-London/Paris.

Well... While I'm not a huge fan of the McDonnell Douglas DC-10, the fault here lies not with the manufacturer but with Continental Airlines for using non-FAA-approved third-party replacement parts. Also, the Concorde was 810 kg overweight at takeoff and a runway inspection was not completed prior to takeoff, as was standard procedure for Concorde takeoffs.

"... And from the old cactus bird" (as in; "Cactus is going to miss you as well"). You hear the pilot of BAW2 (Concorde) "click" on the frequency after this transmission, which explains that he has understood the message. My guesses are that he did not want to use any more of the valuable time on the frequency, with long gratitude-speeches. "Cactus" is the former callsign of America West (now used by US Airlines on the old AWE flights, as it merged with US Airlines in 2005).

As much of a money pit the F-35 Lightning is, an RAF pilot recently conducted Britain's first vertical carrier landing with the F-35 and he stated that it was light years ahead of the Harrier in every possible way and is well worth the investment! I'll reserve my opinions until I know how capable it is with taking on Russia's stealth fighter, the Sukhoi T-50.
@Camsplint11 жыл бұрын
Actually the French could have been forced to continue paying 50% of the ongoing costs even after deciding to stop flying them, if only BA had held them to it - it was part of the original development contract. BA made money from Concorde - even without taking the PR value into account. Of course, it helps if you maintain them properly, do the weight and balance calculations before taking off upwind instead of down, and so avoid breaking them.

That's what war has turned into these days. Even in Iraq which was more of a conventional war, as soon as Saddam was captured and his forces were defeated, it devolved into a war between rival factions that still persists to this day and we know that when ISAF pulls out of Afghanistan, the Taliban will resume control in no time. When it came down to it they miss the beautiful engineering masterpiece as much as the rest of us. I remember one day walking through Manchester and there was this loud jet sound above, I looked up and sure enough there was Concorde carving exquisitely through the clouds. This old guy who happened to be next to me was doing the same, before looking across to me and exclaiming "Concorde!" with a proud grin on his face.
