Absolutely agree, I think his personal code was always closer to the MM than Brotherhood - Danse is the Paladin who has this deep-rooted belief that he is helping the Commonwealth, he *wants* to do the right thing for the common people, and thinks he is doing that with the Brotherhood. He would have been an amazing MM.

Actually, I was planning to put him in the castle for the final battle(including the other companions for an epic finale). However, I just left Danse in the bunker because I was worried about the random Vertibirds. It’s possible that they would’ve attacked Danse(or the other way around). So with the Game that we have, I think the best decision is to send him over to far harbor(Plus, I send Curie over there too. so he doesn’t get lonely lol 😂)

I feel like the list of synths Quinlan mentioned was really under-utilised. Imagine a series of radiant quests where you head into an area where you have to assassinate an innocent resident who’s secretly a synth. You could even be sent after notable NPCs like Sturges and Magnolia.

I usually spare danse during this mission, but keep my distance from him afterwords. Roleplay wise this situation was a wake-up call for cain [my BOS character.] He sometimes slinks off to have conversations with danse, tell him about his adventures. Cain respects Danse, and is more lenient wth some gen 3 synths after this. Its why he ended up sparing acadia as well.

Danse, Nick, and Curie are the proof and example that the Synths count as Humans, there is no reason for them to be exterminated by the BOS, on the contrary, they have a place in the BOS, Minutemen, Railroad, Institute, or in any other human faction.

@@Agente6231 They are not human. They are just imitations of life. The best analogy I can think of is the fake sugar that we put in our beverages(you know if the diet stuff). It tastes like sugar, but it’s not the real thing. Maxson does have a point about the creation of synths. It is an abomination. That being said, I still think they should still be left alone. There’s no need to destroy them. Just be kind of them and of course don’t create anymore. We need to add real people to the world, not fakes. Man this is why I love Fallout. All of these games create some amazing conversations.

Fallout 3 had them ridiculously righteous and morally just to the point they were almost like metal power rangers. Not to say anything bad about you, but Bethesda just doesn't get the factions of Fallout and cannot write them the way they should be. Again, absolutely no slight against you.

Literally everyone else views the wastelanders as primitive savages and Lyons literally caused a division that split the chapter in half. 2. No, Bathesda isn't what's wrong with the BoS. In fact Interplay was messing up their lore long before bathesda. You can not honestly say that the BoS, Tactics, and FO1 chapters are the same. Moreover New Vegas ruins the BoS way more than Bathesda. "Ties that bind" is absolutely ridiculous. An elder can't give a direct order to a private or else he's pretty much fired? Ridiculous. And they legit are fine with getting yeeted for literally no reason at all. Just waiting to watch their population dwindle in a vault when they could do quite literally anything else? As for not getting the factions how about the Khans? Literally a bunch of savage murderers basically turned into the sons of anarchy. Or how about Fallout 2 literally attempting to de-canonize super mutant sterilization? I don't have any problem with interplay, but this nonesense about every single bad thing about falling being bathesda fault, or worse the idea that interplay/obsidian is just some godsend amongst RPGs... is ludicrous. Bathesda saved the franchise and they've done fine so far.

@spiffygonzales5160 1. Yes, I am familiar with the Outcasts. I love those guys, because that to me is the actual brotherhood in 3. They sucked as they had next to no lore, and Bethesda didn't allow you to join them or write any major plot points for either faction. 2. New Vegas meant to show that ONE chapter was failing due to poor leadership, stagnation, and stubbornness. That was the point. 3. They are not a godsend at all. They just simply understood the main idea of fallout, a complex and morally gray game about different factions ideas on how to rebuild the world. Obsidian is flawed, but nowhere near as flawed as Bethesda, who is running Fallout into the ground. 4. Interplay also sucked when it came to the management over Fallout. They made Brotherhood of Steel back in 2004, and that game was garbage. They aren't godsends at all. I hope this doesn't come across as rude, I want to have a polite discussion where we don't explode at one another. If I was a jerk, I didn't mean it.

IIRC there was some cut content regarding this mission where there was the option to kill Maxson and becoming the new Elder of the BoS and kinda wished it had stayed in the game, even if it seems contrived and like it wouldn’t make much sense for the rest of the Brotherhood to just kinda be cool with you mercing their leader and taking his place.

I agree. Obviously, there are some parts of the Game that are clearly incomplete but overall the story is a very awesome experience. It’s a shame that for the past 7 years, people have dragged F4 through the mud(same with F3). Both have very memorable stories.

The first time I played FO4 back in 2015 I played as Nora, I had the option to romance Danse before blind betrayal, I saved Danse and brought him back to live in Sanctuary and the BOS attacked often, then I moved all companions to the castle including Danse and the BOS attacked the castle often. I wonder if the update changed the game and I too remember Haylyn thanking me for saving him. Funnily she thanks me for saving him even when I'm not with the BOS but I can't find Danse anywhere. I think I will start a new female char and see if there are differences since the update.

In my favorite playthrough of the game I basically had Nate join in with the Brotherhood since he was a soldier pre-war. He likes the Brotherhood, because they helped him get into the institute and find his son. It was also familiar to him, since he was a soldier. I'm also a huge fan of the TV show Arrow. So in my game, losing everyone and being frozen was his crucible, so he also became a murdering archer like the green arrow and had a sword like Hawkeye when he was Ronin. I ALWAYS play a Minutemen character, so I wanted to try other playthroughs. However, when I got to this point I couldn't go through with it. The dialogue between Maxson and the sole survive in the ship at the beginning of the mission basically seals the deal. Maxson doesn't understand how synths work and his bigoted and ignorant. However, my character try to follow orders. I had Danse in execution style and then told him I couldn't go through with it. Outside where we're caught by Maxson, Danse once again goes into execution stance. I exit my power armor and stand in front of Danse ready to kill him. But in the last moments, I decide instead to kill Maxson instead. Danse turns on me and so does the Brotherhood. My character then has to run away and leave Danse behind as he's being chased by a Vertibird. From then on, I finish the game as general of the Minutemen and an ally of the Railroad.

I always theorized that Danse got replaced after the mission at ArcJet systems. It's the only time before the Institute that we know of where he was left alone.

Danse isn’t an institute replacement per-Se. If he was a plant by the Institute, he’d still have memories of the Institute, and wouldn’t be loyal to the Brotherhood the way he is. Take Art, or the Warwick situation for example. In those instances, the Institute replacements still reported to the Institute. Danse is more in line with an escaped synth who had his memory wiped, then left the commonwealth and joined up the Brotherhood afterwards.

Did Emil write Maxson' logic here? Why would Maxson think an infiltration unit would tell ANYONE they're a synth, let alone their brother-in-arms, who joined out of genuine conviction and whom the synth KNOWS has creeded to eradicate the Institute and their tech? Is Maxson an idiot? Maxson knows about the Railroad and that they "help" synths, but I'm guessing he doesn't specifically know they wipe their minds, which is obviously what happened to Danse. I'd have loved that detail being revisited with Maxson after this mission (if Maxson survived), having learned about the RR's methods and admitted to making a mistake in putting out a hit on Danse with appropriate furthe dialogue pertaining to Danse living or dying as a result. You'd also think, if the only way Danse could bring intel to the Institute was to travel there physically, that he'd be either AWOL more often or taken the opportunity when on missions and be for longer than expected. There's also the energy spikes that relaying in and out of the Institute - or anywhere - that would show up on BoS instruments. Going the slow route through the CIT drainage system might be the only way I see him frequenting the Institute without the BoS sussing him, but doesn't everyone have trackers?

I never liked this quest, because it boils down to whether the play believes synths are people or not. The fact that the quest has a cop out answer, and cop out speech check to maxson, cheapens the whole quest. The player may not be a railroad agent/sympathizer, but this quest should have been an exit point for the player to choose another faction. It just ends up making the player a massive hypocrite, "ALL Synths are the enemy" except my best friend Nick, and possible romantic partner Danse. To me it should have ended with the player being exiled for helping Danse, or rising the ranks because Danse told them he needed to be the example not the exception.

The game in my opinion needed a better lead writer and a new writing team. Fallout is a more complex, nuanced series (Least from 1 to New Vegas). Bethesda clearly doesn't do "mature, complex, and nuanced" very well. This game could of been awesome, but instead, we got this.

As much as I love the Brotherhood I can't say I'd agree with killing him. I don't even agree with their stance on technology as a whole. It wasn't technology that was the danger, it was humanity itself and even then they're taking the route that would lead faster to their end. If I was part of the Brotherhood, hypothetically, I would have had teams of scribes preserving and learning from what they could gather. Trying to "protect" humanity from what happened before won't even do anything at all. As far as I see it, in a metaphorical sense, the Brotherhood in FO4 is the Roman Empire burning the Library of Alexandria. It ultimately only sets humanity back.

The Danse storyline has always felt unfinished. I am suprised that BGS did not take him to the next step. Seeing Danse become either a part of the Minutemen or even the RailRoad. As part of the Minutemen he would be a great leader and defender of the Commonwealth. Or in the RailRoad a perfect replacement for Glory... Either way Danse should have had a place with either or both...

Each faction I played, I played it hardcore for that faction. So, if I remember correctly, I executed Danse. I much prefer the Minutemen ending, but I'm glad I played all the others. The only thing I refuse to do is play the Raider side in Nuka World. I always have, and I always will wipe them all out. Not about to spoil all my hard work with my settlements. In fact, I have the mod that lets you use the Minutemen to clean out the Raiders, although if anyone tries it, I recommend also getting the mod that buffs the Minutemen, which means they level up as you level up, otherwise they won't be much help.

Whomever wiped and replaced Danse memories didn't change his face? That was strange because if the RR did it they usually replace the face along with the memories. So maybe the RR didn't do it and if not who did? If the Institute would have done it they wouldn't have him as missing.

I can't kill Danse, no matter the character I play -- he's the best soldier the Brotherhood has ever known, and a good man through and through. He's the type of soldier I think Maximus (from the show) needed most, seeing as Danse embodies just about everything Maximus admires in the Brotherhood: discipline, respect and camaraderie. If it were up to me, I would've had him join up with the Minutemen, alongside Curie -- who knows, maybe the two could've hit it off; Hell, they could even adopt synth Shaun and become a family.

There’s something that makes me think the Synths and Institute will be important come Fallout Season 2. The writers for the Show are the same people who made Westworld, a sci-fi Show about Synthetic Humans being made for the enjoyment of their Human masters…sound familiar? It’s very likely that the BoS was the canon FO4 ending, but I’d be surprised if the writers aren’t at least tempted to explore Fallouts Synths. Maybe they could explore Synths in a post-Institute world, or maybe a group of Institute Scientists escaped and started over in a Vault or something?

So I think Mason was trained by the main character from fallout 3 it just a theory but it would makes sense and would explain how he was able to achieve so much because at this point he would have been learning from the best I think he probably saw them as mentor and probably the only family he would have left it would explain also why decon know so much we know the lonewonder was a good character they might traveled and talk d shared stories i think he was part of one of the expedition and was kiled by the instituted it would explain the personal hate and why we can find so many empty bottles of whiskey in his room we know their were 101 vault shirts in the files but never used so like i said it's just a theory

In my first walkthrough (maincharacter) I let Danse live, but when I had to kill the Railroad I went straight to the Minutemen ending in favor of a „good“ ending. In my 2nd walkthrough I‘m going with the BoS just for the achievements on steam but still trying to be a bit Tony Stark style and don’t go fully d’accord with authority. As a German I get too many Hitler vibes from Maxson. It’s like killing Jews all over again, can’t do that to a proper synth. It doesn’t matter what he is, actions define his character for me it’s Danse. A one dimensional boring hero that deserves to survive and won’t die through my hand. NEVER btw can’t do that to Haylen she’s a cutie.

The BOS was always about safeguarding tech from destroying the world, sure by hoarding it, but a Synth SERVING the brotherhood should be no different than any othe robot, even in Maxons eyes. The Fact that Maxson is willing to throw you out this easily (literally), over no Evidence whatsoever, and then welcomes you back with open Arms, is the perfect Point to turn on the Brotherhood. You used to be able to take the BOS Hood from Dance by just taking it from him when he wore a Helmet and unequipped it. You ALSO used to be able to strip Nick Valentine naked by putting him into Power Armor so he unequips his Clothes, and then taking them from his Inventory. The Rest of his Body is undamaged. They did not put in the Effort to model a torn Mk2 Synth Body like they didn't put Effort into anything.

Plot twist. The institute carefully collected DNA samples of BoS soldiers that were on the ground. You know: spit, blood and what not. They couldn't collect DNA samples of people staying only on the Prydwen , but the rest was covered. As the institute is advanced AF (I mean they have their own robots and teleporters, the BoS is using ancient tech in comparison), they of course noticed the program that infiltrated their network and gave it the appropriate data. Among this data is making up synths (yes I know the synth component, but ignore it for a moment), since those can be simple names, and pairing it with DNA. The DNA values can be as well values of recovered DNA from the surface. They didn't put the names and the DNA of underlings, but they started with high rank officers like Danse to wreak havoc in the organization. If the organization kills itself, starting from high rank officers, then it will collapse quickly. It is a smart move. Everyone could be a synth if the institute leaks the proper data. Further all Synths should descend from Father. They needed Father's DNA. So it cannot be that the Synth has the DNA of Danse. taps head guy.jpeg

This, or something like it, is what I thought the Institute ending should have had. Not an assault on the airport. Leave behind hints of another officer working with the Institute. Maybe add that the programming is so good they are hardly aware they are doing it. Then let the mole hunt begin. Add a bit of sabotage from the Sole Survivor, combined with their natural paranoia and fanaticism and the BoS will go into a full civil war.

Was the brotherhood of steel always like this? With everything I’ve seen, I can’t help but really compare them to the German Nazis. But, something is making me hold out hope that they weren’t like this before fallout 4

I think it was cowardly of Bethesda to not let you kill Maxson in the confrontation, branching the story from there. He's arguably one of the most evil characters in the game, and it's frustrating that the only ways to kill him are to side against the Brotherhood.
