⁴ᴷ Last Days of Interim R160 (A) Train Service

In June 2020, two R179 cars separated while in service resulting in the grounding of the entire fleet. To fill the gaps left by the R179s, R46s from the (A) went to the (C) line, R160s from the (F) went to the (A) line, and R32s were reactivated and sent to the (J/Z) in addition to spare R143s and R160s. With all R179s back in service, December 7th marked the last day of the R160s being temporarily assigned to Pitkin Yard. The last consist, seen in this video, was 8828-8832+9128-9132. Here are some shots I took a few months back combined with the shots I took of the last consist the Friday before it got taken out of service.

Watching this video made me sad. I will miss the R160 A train. It was nice having quality NTTs on the A line, even though it was temporary. I hope they come back one day.

This summer was a trip. I have a feeling we'll see this again soon, especially if severe service cuts happen next year lots of R160s would be freed and there wouldn't be a need for a percentage of the fleet (oldest cars in storage)

What’s really ridiculous is all Siemens’ are at Jamaica, Coney Island got a few Alstoms, mainly R160B, and 2-4 sets are R160A-2’s. Instead of moving 160s, what the could’ve done was keep R160s at Pitkin/Rockaway/207, put some R46s from Pitkin/RW/207, at Coney Island, and maybe move the R160s that were intended to go to Coney Island, to move them to Pitkin/RW/207.

Why do that when what the MTA did is fine? Plus the system has these cars officially assigned to Jamaica Yard. They were never Pitkins cars to begin with. The cars will be moving back to Jamaica to provide service on the E and F, and to get the CBTC system up and running (Jamaica Yard needs 1200 cars for CBTC service). What you’re doing is shorting out the Jamaica Fleet, ensuring there won’t be enough trains for the CBTC operation. However, keep a lookout for things. There could potentially be R211s on the A line, which could retire the R46 cars and push the R179s elsewhere.

The last R160 on the A was bounded for Lefferts Blvd as I recalled. These are the best to run on the A, unlike on the E, F, and R, well it’s just gonna be the IND Queens Blvd for now until another screw up happens with those lemons. They will get back the allotment of R160s that were rotated with the A train fleet. The E, F, and R are 100% R160s. Also do expect the all remaining Siemens sets to leave the N, Q, and W. All 260 Siemens cars will be migrating over to Jamaica Yard, who will release a number of cars in the 9803-9942 range (from what I heard, it could be 9833-9922 when all said and done).

The R179s are back, and the E, F, and R are going to need the R160s back to get full service yesterday. Speaking of the R160s, theres another major shakeup. The remaining Siemens sets at Coney Island are being moved to Jamaica, and Coney Island will get R160s 9833-9922.

That’s not the plan. As Queens Blvd CBTC and other unrelated work on the E, F, and R is close to wrapping up, the R160s that were on the A had to move back to the E, F, and R lines at Jamaica Yard. There’s also a one for one swap going on again between Jamaica and Coney Island Yards. The remaining Siemens cars will move to Jamaica and in exchange they will get 9833-9922. However do keep an eye out on things. There’s a possibility that all of the base order R211s for the NYC Subway would be assigned to the Pitkin Yard home of the A and Rockaway Shuttle. Specifically: all 440 cars could comprise the entire A train fleet and much of the C fleet (300 for the A, 15 for the Rockaway Park Shuttle, and about 90 for the C, rest is for spare factor). The 5-car R179s would be reassigned to the C route and the remaining 4-car R179s would be reassigned to the East New York Yard. The C would have 130 5-car R179s, plus 90 R211s = 220 5-car trains = 22 10-car trains. The R211s will be coming out brand new and will be even more reliable than the R179s. Note: SUBJECT TO CHANGE

R46 will be retired and replaced by r211 not r160 or r179, thats why R179 come to replace r32 and r42

A and C lines don’t have enough NTT service to fill in as well as the N, Q, W, B, D, G, 1, 3, and 6 lines. R160s were meant to replace most of the R32s along with the R179s. The R211s will take forever to come and R46s have been running for several years ever since the 1970s. Ever since NTT came on the A and B Division on NYC Subway, a lot of the old fleet including R46s were remaining on the line as well as R68, R68a, R62, and R62a. So if any NTT service comes to fill in for any NYC Subway line, give them the opportunity.

Nobody wants old fashioned subway cars with weird seats, dirty chairs, dark environment, np screens, no announcements, no information about places they’re stopping! It’s very hectic! So that is why A, C, N, Q, W, B, D, G, 1, 3, and 6 lines need full NTT!
